Epidermal field carcinogenesis in bald-headed: An attempt at finetuning early non-invasive detection.

Skin weathering and photoaging of the balding scalp have not attracted much investigative attention so far. However, the concept of field cancerization, in particular actinic field carcinogenesis, is likely applicable to this part of the body. The aim of the study was to finetune the epidermal actinic changes present on hairlessness scalp. The ultraviolet light-enhanced visualization (ULEV) method was used to assess a series of 50 healthy men older than 50 years with documented baldness for over 15 years. They were scrutenized looking for altered epidermal structures corresponding to photoagin

Isolation and expression of a Malassezia globosa lipase gene, LIP1.

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD) are common hyperproliferative scalp disorders with a similar etiology. Both result, in part, from metabolic activity of Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta, commensal basidiomycete yeasts commonly found on human scalps. Current hypotheses about the mechanism of D/SD include Malassezia-induced fatty acid metabolism, particularly lipase-mediated breakdown of sebaceous lipids and release of irritating free fatty acids. We report that lipase activity was detected in four species of Malassezia, including M. globosa. We isolated lipase activity by wa

Human immunodeficiency virus and the skin: selected controversies.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome was first recognized as a new disease in 1981 because of the unusual association of Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in young men. The skin remains one of the most important clinical markers for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, now recognized as the end stage of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Indeed, an urticarial viral exanthem appearing during seroconversion may allow early identification of newly infected individuals who might benefit from administration of antiviral therapy during plasma viremia. The "asymptom

[In vitro antifungal activity of azoles and amphotericin B against Malassezia furfur by the CLSI M27-A3 microdilution and Etest® methods].

BACKGROUND: Malassezia furfur is a human skin commensal yeast that can cause skin and opportunistic systemic infections. Given its lipid dependant status, the reference methods established by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) to evaluate antifungal susceptibility in yeasts are not applicable. AIMS: To evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of M. furfur isolates from infections in humans to antifungals of clinical use. METHODS: The susceptibility profile to amphotericin B, itraconazole, ketoconazole and voriconazole of 20 isolates of M. furfur, using the broth microdilution

Cd34+ Stromal Cells/Telocytes in Normal and Pathological Skin.

We studied CD34+ stromal cells/telocytes (CD34+SCs/TCs) in pathologic skin, after briefly examining them in normal conditions. We confirm previous studies by other authors in the normal dermis regarding CD34+SC/TC characteristics and distribution around vessels, nerves and cutaneous annexes, highlighting their practical absence in the papillary dermis and presence in the bulge region of perifollicular groups of very small CD34+ stromal cells. In non-tumoral skin pathology, we studied examples of the principal histologic patterns in which CD34+SCs/TCs have (1) a fundamental pathophysiological r

Dermatological manifestations of individuals infected with human T cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I).

BACKGROUND: Human T cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is associated with specific manifestations such as adult T cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATLL), HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), HTLV-I-associated uveitis, and infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-I (IDH). Although ATLL and IDH are considered specific manifestations of HTLV-I infection, several dermatological manifestations have been described in HTLV-I seropositive patients. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the prevalences of skin lesions in patients infected with HTLV-I in an area

Contact dermatitis due to budesonide: report of five cases and review of the Japanese literature.

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to corticosteroids has recently gained increased attention. METHODS: Five cases of contact dermatitis due to budesonide, a nonhalogenated steroid, are described. The Japanese literature was reviewed for reports on this allergy, and the occurrence due to budesonide was compared with that of other dermocorticosteroids. RESULTS: Budesonide use can cause contact dermatitis. CONCLUSIONS: Although budesonide may be beneficial because of its anti-inflammatory effects, clinicians should be alert to its potential for causing contact dermatitis.

The Significance of Proper Care for Textured Hair on Inpatient Psychiatric Units.

BACKGROUND: Hair plays a pivotal role in identity, expression, and well-being. Patients with textured hair require specific products and practices to maintain scalp and hair health, including adapted washing frequency, moisturization, and hairstyle maintenance. However, inpatient psychiatric unit policies often restrict personal products due to safety and storage restrictions and may not otherwise supply appropriate alternatives. SUMMARY: Without appropriate products, such as sulfate-free shampoos, leave-in conditioners, and moisturizing creams, inpatient psychiatric patients with textured ha

Eyebrow Madarosis: An Updated Review of the Etiology and Management, Part I - Nonscarring Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Eyebrow madarosis, or eyebrow alopecia, has significant cosmetic and psychosocial implications. Nonscarring causes are diverse, including autoimmune, infectious, endocrine, genetic, nutritional, traumatic, and iatrogenic etiologies. Despite its frequency in dermatologic practice, guidance for evaluation and management remains limited. METHODS: A comprehensive PubMed search (1960–2025) was performed using terms related to "eyebrow alopecia," "eyebrow madarosis," and specific disease processes. English-language studies were included if they evaluated eyebrow involvement and pr

β-1,4-Galactan suppresses lipid synthesis in sebaceous gland cells via TLR4.

Sebum is a lipid mixture secreted from sebaceous glands of the skin. The excessive secretion of sebum causes acne vulgaris and seborrheic dermatitis, while its deficiency causes xerosis. Therefore, the appropriate control of sebum secretion is crucially important to keep the skin healthy. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of naturally occurring polysaccharides on lipid biosynthesis in hamster sebaceous gland cells. Among the tested polysaccharides, β-1,4-galactan, the main chain of type I arabinogalactan, most potently suppressed lipid synthesis in the sebaceous gland cells as ana
