Global estimates of high-level brain drain and deficit.

Brain drain, the international migration of scientists in search of better opportunities, has been a long-standing concern, but quantitative … ss of native scientists lost most scientists to migration. This loss occurred in both developed and developing countries. Adjusting for population and using the U.S. as reference, the number of highly cited native-born scientists was at least 75% of the expected number in only 8 countries other than the U.S. It is estimated that approximately 94% of the expected top s …

Determinants of Lethal and Sexual Violence Against Women: A Cross-Country Analysis of OECD Countries.

Violence against women (VaW) is a pervasive global problem affecting both developed and developing countries, regardless of culture, socioeconomic status, education, or race. Designing effective policies to prevent and reduce VaW requires a clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying different forms of violence, particularly physical and sexual violence. This study provides a comparative macro-level analysis of the determinants of these forms of violence using an unbalanced panel of 38 OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries from 2000 to 2018. We estimate p…

Global food expenditure patterns diverge between low-income and high-income countries.

Globalization, income growth and changing cultural trends are believed to prompt consumers in low-income countries to adopt the more affluent diet of high-income countries. This study investigates the convergence of food expenditure patterns worldwide, focusing on total food expenditure, raw food categories and ultra-processed foods and beverages across more than 90 countries over the past decades. Contrary to prior belief, we find that food expenditure patterns of lower-income countries do not universally align with those of higher-income nations. This trend is evident across most raw food ca

Estimating the impact of treatment and imaging modalities on 5-year net survival of 11 cancers in 200 countries: a simulation-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate survival estimates are important for cancer control planning. Although observed survival estimates are unavailable for many countries, where they are available, wide variations are reported. Understanding the impact of specific treatment and imaging modalities can help decision makers to effectively allocate resources to improve cancer survival in their local context. METHODS: We developed a microsimulation model of stage-specific cancer survival in 200 countries and territories for 11 cancers (oesophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas, lung, breast, cervi

Global epidemiology of gout: prevalence, incidence and risk factors.

Gout is a crystal-deposition disease that results from chronic elevation of uric acid levels above the saturation point for monosodium urate … e being highest in Pacific countries. Developed countries tend to have a higher burden of gout than developing countries, and seem to have increasing prevalence and incidence of the disease. Some ethnic groups are particularly susceptible to gout, supporting the importance of genetic predisposition. Socioeconomic and dietary factors, as well as comorbidities and medic …

Immunodeficiency in children starting antiretroviral therapy in low-, middle-, and high-income countries.

BACKGROUND: The CD4 cell count or percent (CD4%) at the start of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is an important prognostic factor in children starting therapy and an important indicator of program performance. We describe trends and determinants of CD4 measures at cART initiation in children from low-, middle-, and high-income countries. METHODS: We included children aged <16 years from clinics participating in a collaborative study spanning sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the United States. Missing CD4 values at cART start were estimated through multiple imputation. S

Hiding in plain sight: highlighting the research gap on access to HIV and other sexual health services for underrepresented gay men in developed Western countries - insights from a scoping review with a focus on Arab men.

BACKGROUND: Strategies pertaining to HIV and sexual health for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) have shifted focus towards underrepresented subgroups within some developed Western countries. Although emerging research exists on some subgroups, limited attention has been given to the needs of Arab GBMSM in these contexts. Considering they are part of a large diaspora, understanding their access to services is crucial. This paper focuses on Arab GBMSM as a case study within a scoping review, highlighting their hidden status within the broader landscape of HIV and sexual

Bridging the Global Divide: Advancing Traumatic Brain Injury Research Through Globally Representative Data.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant global health issue, yet its impact is disproportionately borne by low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where higher exposure to risk factors and limited health care resources exacerbate the burden. Despite this, the majority of TBI research is derived from data sets curated in high-income countries (HICs), where research infrastructure and resources are more extensive. As a result, clinical guidelines for TBI management are primarily shaped by data from HICs, with little consideration for the distinct factors and health care challenges

Estimated health effects from domestic use of gaseous fuels for cooking and heating in high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to household air pollution from polluting domestic fuel (solid fuel and kerosene) represents a substantial global public health burden and there is an urgent need for rapid transition to clean domestic fuels. Gas for cooking and heating might possibly affect child asthma, wheezing, and respiratory health. The aim of this review was to synthesise the evidence on the health effects of gaseous fuels to inform policies for scalable clean household energy. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarised the health effects from cooking or heating with gas co

Epidemiology of Hepatitis C Virus: A Battle on New Frontiers.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality in the United States and other parts of the world. The epidemiology of the disease is highly variable between and within countries, and strategies to deal with HCV identification and treatment must be tailored to the geographic location and the political and economic environment of the region. Although great strides have been made in improving HCV transmission risk in blood supply products, new challenges related to changing patterns of disease incidence continue to require fresh evaluation and new approach

Is the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis valid for all countries? Fresh insights from bias-corrected dynamic panel data models.

This study examines the relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions, testing the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis for 147 countries from 1995 to 2018 using a bias-corrected dynamic panel data model. GDP per capita is the main explanatory variable, with industrialization, foreign direct investment, and globalization as controls. Results show strong persistence of emissions across all income groups, with the highest inertia in middle- and low-income countries, indicating that past emissions heavily influence current levels. An inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets c

A comparative analysis of supply chain factors impacting COVID-19 vaccine security in high-income countries (HICs) and low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic focused attention on the importance of vaccine security to national security. Demand for vaccines far exceeded supply when the first COVID-19 vaccines were released. Growing data suggest a non-perfect correlation among vaccine development, production, purchases, deliveries and vaccination rates. As such, the best approach to strengthening vaccine security remains unclear. In this study, we use an operations research/operations management framework to characterise the relationship between vaccine security and key supply chain predictor variables in high-incom
