Creatine Supplementation: An Update.

Creatine is a popular and widely used ergogenic dietary supplement among athletes, for which studies have consistently shown increased lean muscle mass and exercise capacity when used with short-duration, high-intensity exercise. In addition to strength gains, research has shown that creatine supplementation may provide additional benefits including enhanced postexercise recovery, injury prevention, rehabilitation, as well as a number of potential neurologic benefits that may be relevant to sports. Studies show that short- and long-term supplementation is safe and well tolerated in healthy ind

Systematic review of the effect of aquatic therapeutic exercise in breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Aquatic therapeutic exercise can be equally effective or even superior to land-based exercise in improving several clinical variables. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the effects compared to land-based interventions particularly in breast cancer (BC) patients. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the effects of aquatic therapeutic exercise on pain, shoulder mobility, lymphedema, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition, pulmonary function, cancer-related fatigue (CRF) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and which parameters

Modified forearm ischemic test in hypouricemic patients.

Renal hypouricemia sometimes leads to exercise-induced acute kidney injury (EIAKI) of unknown pathogenesis. In order to elucidate the various pathological conditions associated with hypouricemia, we analyzed the effects of low uric acid level on energy metabolism. We have modified semi-ischemic forearm exercise test and performed this test in one Japanese healthy volunteer, three patients with hereditary renal hypouricemia and one patient with hereditary xanthinuria of Czech origin. Forearm exercise was performed by squeezing a hand dynamometer with the sphygmomanometer cuff pressure kept at t

Haemodynamic effects of intravenous diltiazem at rest and exercise in patients with coronary artery disease.

The acute effects of intravenous diltiazem on exercise performance were studied in 10 patients with coronary artery disease. Haemodynamic measurements were made at rest and during exercise before and after 0.5 mg kg-1 of diltiazem. Diltiazem prolonged the duration of exercise (+2.85 min, P less than 0.001) and delayed the onset of ischaemic ST depression or angina in all patients. The highest tolerated heart rate and pressure rate product were increased in all but one patient after diltiazem. At rest diltiazem decreased mean arterial pressure (-10.8%, P less than 0.005), systemic vascular resi

Acute effects of inhaled nitric oxide on inspiratory neural drive, dyspnea, and exercise endurance in symptomatic patients post-pulmonary embolism.

Following pulmonary embolism (PE), up to a third of patients develop persistent activity-related dyspnea without evidence of pulmonary hypertension at rest. In such individuals, dyspnea appears to be associated with relatively high inspiratory neural drive (IND, assessed via diaphragm electromyography) during exercise. Excessive IND is multifactorial, but the effects of regional pulmonary capillary hypoperfusion and increased physiological dead space may be contributory. We aimed to determine the effect of iNO on IND, perceived dyspnea intensity, and exercise endurance in patients post-PE. We

The effect of obesity on dyspnea, exercise capacity, walk work and workload in patients with COPD.

INTRODUCTION: COPD and obesity are major public health problems that cause mortality and morbidity all over the world. The combined of COPD and obesity is predicted to increase further in the coming years. Obesity primarily affects the pulmonary system by altering respiratory functions, exercise capacity, pulmonary gas exchange, and endurance and power of respiratory muscles. In this study, we aimed to compare the dyspnea sensation, exercise capacity, walk work and workload in obese COPD patients compared to preobese and normal overweight COPD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 218 patients wit

Exercise and the right ventricle: a potential Achilles' heel.

Exercise is associated with unequivocal health benefits and results in many structural and functional changes of the myocardium that enhance performance and prevent heart failure. However, intense exercise also presents a significant hemodynamic challenge in which the right-sided heart chambers are exposed to a disproportionate increase in afterload and wall stress that can manifest as myocardial fatigue or even damage if intense exercise is sustained for prolonged periods. This review focuses on the physiological factors that result in a disproportionate load on the right ventricle during exe

Exercise oxidative skeletal muscle metabolism in adolescents with cystic fibrosis.

What is the central question of this study? Do intrinsic abnormalities in oxygenation and/or muscle oxidative metabolism contribute to exercise intolerance in adolescents with mild cystic fibrosis? What is the main finding and its importance? This study found no evidence that in adolescents with mild cystic fibrosis in a stable clinical state intrinsic abnormalities in skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism seem to play a clinical significant role. Based on these results, we concluded that there is no metabolic constraint to benefit from exercise training. Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are

Restrictive Mitral Annuloplasty Does Not Limit Exercise Capacity.

BACKGROUND: Restrictive mitral annuloplasty is the preferred method of treating secondary mitral regurgitation. The use of small annuloplasty rings to reduce the high recurrence rates may result in mitral stenosis. METHODS: Thirty-six patients who underwent restrictive mitral annuloplasty with Carpentier-Edwards classic 26 size ring underwent exercise echocardiography and ergospirometry. Resting catecholamines and N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels were measured. RESULTS: At the time of study, the median time from operation was 16.6 months (interquartile range, 8.5 t
