Sedimentary humic substances in the northern Adriatic sea (Mediterranean sea).

Humic compounds were determined in sediments collected in an area of the Adriatic sea receiving fresh waters from the river Po. Sediment cores (10 cm) were sectioned into four layers which were analysed separately for redox potential (Eh), total phosphorus (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), humic (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) content. The structure of HA and FA was also investigated. The results showed that the TOC and TP content decreased from the coast to the open-sea stations. Humic and fulvic acid concentrations were also inversely correlated to the distance from the coast. Moreover, the humic

Application of a vital fluorescent staining method for simultaneous, near-real-time concentration monitoring of two bacterial strains in an Atlantic coastal plain aquifer in Oyster, Virginia.

Two differentially labeled bacterial strains were monitored in near-real time during two field-scale bacterial transport experiments in a shallow aquifer in July 2000 and July 2001. Comamonas sp. strain DA001 and Acidovorax sp. strain OY-107 were grown and labeled with the vital fluorescent stain TAMRA/SE (5 [and -6]-carboxytetramethylrhodamine, succinimidyl ester) or CFDA/SE (5 [and -6]-carboxyfluorescein diacetate, succinimidyl ester). Fluorescently labeled cells and a conservative bromide tracer were introduced into a suboxic superficial aquifer, followed by groundwater collection from down

Methyltransferase: an enzyme assay for microbial methylmercury formation in acidic soils and sediments.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a highly toxic form of mercury that bioaccumulates in aquatic food chains. However, methods to reliably identify sites of MeHg formation or to quantify MeHg production require the use of isotopic tracers, which limits their use. In this paper, a method is presented to quantify the methylation of mercury by a methyltransferase pathway. This methyltransferase pathway is one of the biochemical pathways responsible for biological mercury methylation. Protein is extracted from environmental samples, and mercury methyltransferase (HgMT) activity of soil extracts is calculated

Heavy metal coprecipitation with hydrozincite [Zn(5)(CO(3))(2)(OH)(6)] from mine waters caused by photosynthetic microorganisms.

An iron-poor stream of nearly neutral pH polluted by mine tailings has been investigated for a natural phenomenon responsible for the polishing of heavy metals in mine wastewaters. A white mineralized mat, which was determined to be hydrozincite [Zn(5)(CO(3))(2)(OH)(6)] by X-ray diffraction analysis, was observed in the stream sediments mainly in spring. The precipitate shows a total organic matter residue of 10% dry weight and contains high concentrations of Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, and other metals. Scanning electron microscopy analysis suggests that hydrozincite is mainly of biological origin. Dorma

Particle-size control of radionuclide enrichment and environmental risk pathways in slurry from the Wandan mud volcano.

Mud volcanism acts as a natural conduit for transporting deep geological materials, saline fluids, and naturally occurring radionuclides to the surface, potentially generating complex environmental hazards. Despite extensive research on the geochemistry of mud volcanoes, the role of particle-size-dependent processes in controlling radionuclide mobility and exposure risk remains insufficiently understood. This study presents an integrated physicochemical and radiological investigation of slurry samples collected from the Wandan mud volcano in southern Taiwan. Particle-size analysis demonstrates

Physical, chemical, and microbial feedbacks controlling brine geochemistry and lake morphology in polyextreme salar environments.

Despite the harsh environmental conditions in the world's oldest and driest desert, some salt flat or 'salar' environments in the Atacama Desert host standing bodies of water known as saline lakes. Evaporite minerals deposited within saline lakes result from the equilibrium of environmental, sedimentological, and biogeochemical processes that occur in the salar; consequently, these minerals are sensitive records of human activities and ecological, evolutionary, and geological changes. The objective of this study was to evaluate feedbacks between physical, chemical, and microbial processes that

Transformation of Cyanobacterial Biomolecules by Iron Oxides During Flash Pyrolysis: Implications for Mars Life-Detection Missions.

Answering the question of whether life ever existed on Mars is a key goal of both NASA's and ESA's imminent Mars rover missions. The obfuscatory effects of oxidizing salts, such as perchlorates and sulfates, on organic matter during thermal decomposition analysis techniques are well established. Less well studied are the transformative effects of iron oxides and (oxy)hydroxides, which are present in great abundances in the martian regolith. We examined the products of flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (a technique analogous to the thermal techniques employed by past, current

Estimation of the radiological background and dose assessment in areas with naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies--a case study in the Iberian Massif (Central Portugal).

Naturally occurring uranium geochemical anomalies, representative of the several thousand recognized in the Portuguese section of the Iberian Massif and outcropping in three target areas with a total of a few thousand square metres, were subjected to a detailed study (1:1000 scale) to evaluate the radiological health-risk on the basis of a dose assessment. To reach this goal some radioactive isotopes from the uranium, thorium and potassium radioactive series were measured in 52 samples taken from different environmental compartments: soils, stream sediments, water, foodstuff (vegetables) and a

Biofilm-associated microbial communities on microplastics in rural and urban aquatic environments of Tamil Nadu, India: Functional characterization and antibiotic resistance.

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent aquatic pollutants that provide substrates for microbial colonization and biofilm development. This study investigated the functional characteristics of MP-associated microbial communities across coastal, estuarine, and freshwater environments in Tamil Nadu, India, providing a comparative assessment of plastisphere functionality under varying levels of anthropogenic influence. A total of 615 MPs were collected from water and sediment samples, of which 279 particles (45.4%) exhibited visible biofilms and were selected for further analysis. Biofilm-associated M

Thiohalorhabdus methylotropha sp. nov., an extremely halophilic autotrophic methylotiotroph from hypersaline lakes.

So far, there have been no reports of trimethylamine (TMA)-utilizing extremely halophilic microorganisms in hypersaline habitats. Our aerobic enrichments at 4 M total Na+ with 5 mM TMA inoculated with surface sediments from hypersaline soda (at pH 9.5) or chloride-sulfate (at pH 7) lakes in southwestern Siberia were successful only for the latter. The initial enrichment included both bacteria and haloarchaea but only the bacterial component was able to grow as a pure culture with TMA. Strain Cl-TMA forms a new-species lineage within the genus Thiohalorhabdus which includes extremely halophilic

Ingredients for microbial life preserved in 3.5 billion-year-old fluid inclusions.

It is widely hypothesised that primeval life utilised small organic molecules as sources of carbon and energy. However, the presence of such primordial ingredients in early Earth habitats has not yet been demonstrated. Here we report the existence of indigenous organic molecules and gases in primary fluid inclusions in c. 3.5-billion-year-old barites (Dresser Formation, Pilbara Craton, Western Australia). The compounds identified (e.g., H2S, COS, CS2, CH4, acetic acid, organic (poly-)sulfanes, thiols) may have formed important substrates for purported ancestral sulfur and methanogenic metaboli

Design of Fungal Co-Cultivation Based on Comparative Metabolomics and Bioactivity for Discovery of Marine Fungal Agrochemicals.

Microbial co-cultivation is employed for awakening silent biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) to enhance chemical diversity. However, the selection of appropriate partners for co-cultivation remains a challenge. Furthermore, competitive interactions involving the suppression of BGCs or upregulation of known, functional metabolite(s) during co-cultivation efforts is also common. Herein, we performed an alternative approach for targeted selection of the best co-cultivation pair. Eight marine sediment-derived fungi were classified as strong or weak, based on their anti-phytopathogenic potency. The

Prevalence and pollution characteristics of antibiotic resistant genes in one high anthropogenically-impacted river.

The objectives of this study were to comprehensively investigate the occurrence, distribution, and mobility of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in the biofilm, water, and sediment from a section of the Weihe-river, in the northern Henan province, China. The abundances of nine ARGs belonging to four commonly used antibiotic classes (tetracyclines, sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, and multidrug) and class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1) were quantified. Sulfonamides gene (sulI) accounted for the highest percentage of detected ARGs in most sampling sites, including in water, biofilm, and sedime

Different circulation history of mercury in aquatic biota from King George Island of the Antarctic.

To trace the circulation history of aquatic bioavailable Hg in the Antarctic, the species and isotopic compositions of Hg in sediment, Archaeogastropoda (Agas), Neogastropoda (Ngas), and fish collected from King George Island were studied in detail. Positive mass independent fractionation (MIF) was observed and positively correlated with the percentages of methylmercury (MeHg%) in Agas and Ngas, suggesting an effect of MeHg accumulation during trophic transfer on MIF signatures. However, both the ratios of Δ199Hg/δ202Hg and Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg indicated different circulation histories of Hg in Agas,

Effects of sediment resuspension on the oxidation of acid-volatile sulfides and release of metals (iron, manganese, zinc) in Pescadero estuary (CA, USA).

Bar-built estuaries are unique ecosystems characterized by the presence of a sandbar barrier, which separates the estuary from the ocean for extended periods and can naturally reopen to the ocean with heavy rainfall and freshwater inflows. The physical effects associated with the transition from closed to open state, specifically water mixing and sediment resuspension, often indirectly worsen water quality conditions and are suspected to drive near-annual fish kills at the Pescadero estuary in northern California. The effects of sediment acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) oxidation, specifically oxyg
