Child maltreatment and trauma exposure among deaf and hard of hearing young adults.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the prevalence of child maltreatment and lifetime exposure to other traumatic events in a sample of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH; n=147) and matched hearing (H; n=317) college students. Participants completed measures of child maltreatment (CM), adult victimization and trauma exposure, and current symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Overall, DHH participants reported significantly more instances of CM compared to H participants, with 76% of DHH reporting some type of childhood abuse or neglect. Additionally, DHH participants report

Profiles in fibromyalgia: algometry, auditory evoked potentials and clinical characterization of different subtypes.

The heterogeneity found in fibromyalgia (FM) patients has led to the investigation of disease subgroups, mainly based on clinical features. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that clinical FM subgroups are associated with different underlying pathophysiological mechanisms. Sixty-three FM patients were classified in type I or type II, according to the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), and in mild/moderate versus severe FM, according to the severity of three cardinal symptoms considered in the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 2010 criteria (unrefreshed sleep, cognitive

Impact of suspected food allergy on emotional distress and family life of parents prior to allergy diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy is associated with psychological distress in both child and parent. It is unknown whether parental distress is present prior to clinical diagnosis or whether experiences at clinic can reduce any distress present. This study aimed to assess anxiety and depression in parents and the impact of suspected food allergy on the lives of families before and after a visit to an allergy clinic. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-four parents visiting an allergy clinic for the first time to have their child assessed for food allergy completed a study-specific questionnaire and the H

[Extra-auditory effects of noise].

In the last thirty years, several studies have demonstrated a correlation between exposure to noise and the development of alterations and/or pathologies in organs and apparatus, apart from the auditory one. Exposure to noise can induce biochemical, physiological, or psychosocial modifications that can remain either inside the range of biological normality or alter and compromise the psychophysical well-being of the individual depending on the extent of the functional alterations of organic systems and psychosocial functions; both the reversibility and duration of the alterations and the adapt

[Expressions of depression in Alzheimer's disease. The current scientific debate].

UNLABELLED: This overview analyses findings coming from researches that considered the interaction between depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHOD: Information was collected from the Medline database and from a reasoned manual analysis of the published studies. RESULTS: The prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with AD is elevated (40-50%). The role of depression in the pathogenesis of AD (independent, prodromal symptom, factor of risk) still must be defined. Data on family history of depression suggest that AD could act as stimulus triggering depression from a basis of a gen

Decision-making about genetic testing among women at familial risk for breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Recent identification of the breast-ovarian cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 and the breast cancer susceptibility gene BRCA2 have raised the possibility of clinical genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility. This study examined decision-making about future susceptibility testing among women at familial risk for breast cancer. Based on the transtheoretical model, it was hypothesized that readiness to undergo testing would be related to the ratio between the perceived advantages (pros) and disadvantages (cons) of learning one's susceptibility status. METHODS: Seventy-four wome

Psychosocial issues of neonatal screening in the context of its major expansion: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Newborn screening (NBS) programs began in the 1960s in the US and Europe. Systematically offered at birth, these programs enable the early detection of serious, rare, inherited diseases, facilitating timely treatment and improving survival rates. The range of detectable diseases has expanded significantly, with inclusion criteria evolving since the programs' inception. Recent advances in genomics now allow for the detection of all DNA variant, enabling the identification of conditions typically diagnosed later in life and/or for which no effective treatment or preventive interventi

Association between the clinical status of patients admitted to Intensive Care and the emotional state of their next of kin: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Admission to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) constitutes a sudden and emotionally impactful event for both the critically ill patient and their family. Prognostic uncertainty is frequently associated with elevated levels of anxiety, depression, and stress within the family. In the Portuguese context, the association between the patient's clinical status and the emotional state of their next of kin remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to analyze that relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in an adult ICU in central Portugal, using a convenience sampl

[Gender identity disorder and related sexual behavior problems in children and adolescents: from the perspective of development and child psychiatry].

The present paper reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on children and adolescents with gender identity disorder. The organizational framework underlying this review is one that presents gender behavior in children and adolescents as a continuum rather than as a dichotomy of normal versus abnormal categories. Theories of normative gender development, prevalence, assessment, developmental trajectories, and comorbidity were investigated. There is a greater fluidity and likelihood of change in the pre-pubertal period. It was reported that the majority of affected children had been eve

Mechanisms of change in naturalistic mental health care settings: study protocol for a longitudinal multimethod study.

INTRODUCTION: Mental disorders are among the leading causes of the global burden of disease and are often associated with severe functional impairment and high societal costs. Psychotherapeutic, psychopharmacological and internet-based mental health interventions have proven to be helpful, but challenges remain, including only moderate response rates, high relapse rates and barriers to accessing mental healthcare. Much of the existing evidence stems from studies conducted in controlled, often standardised settings that only partially reflect real-world conditions, contributing to a 'scientist-

Alcohol Use and Abusive or Neglectful Behaviors Among Family Caregivers of Patients With Dementia.

IMPORTANCE: The increasing prevalence of dementia presents challenges for family caregivers. Understanding how alcohol use among caregivers relates to abusive and neglectful behaviors (ANBs) toward care recipients with dementia may inform interventions to improve the well-being of both. OBJECTIVE: To explore alcohol use patterns among family caregivers of relatives with dementia and investigate whether hazardous drinking and drinking on a given day are independently associated with increased odds of ANBs toward care recipients. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This microlongitudinal cohort

Prevalence of postpartum depression at the clinic for obstetrics and gynecology in Kosovo teaching hospital: Demographic, obstetric and psychosocial risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression affects 10 up to 15 % of women of childbearing age in industrialized countries and presents significant public health problem which leads to short and long-term consequences for mother, child and her family. However, social determinants, including poverty, gender stereotypes, domestic violence, gender discrimination and cultural differences make this medical issue more problematic in less developed countries. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of postpartum depression at the Clinic for Obstetrics and Gynecology in Pristina,

Improving the postnatal outcomes of new mothers.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal depression persists worldwide as a troubling issue for many new mothers and their families. The practice of early discharge within 72 hours after birth from maternity hospitals in Australia requires community-based care of new mothers, typically provided by community midwives initially, and then by maternal and child health nurses (MCHN). This latter workforce encounters the onset of distress/depression in vulnerable women and is expected to manage their care, but their training does not equip sufficiently them to do this. AIMS: The aim of the study was to evaluate the e

Prevalence of mental disorders and related risk factors in refugees and asylum seekers in Campania.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the increasing presence of refugees and asylum seekers displaced from their country of origin, determined significant social, economic, humanitarian and public health implications in host countries, including Italy. These populations are exposed to several potential stressful experiences which make them vulnerable to psychological distress. In fact, the majority of studies addressing the topic found a higher prevalence of mental disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder, in refugees and asylum seekers with respect to the g
