A systematic approach to the use of the multiplanar display in evaluation of abnormal vascular connections to the fetal heart using 4-dimensional ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: The multiplanar display is a modality that allows the simultaneous visualization of 3 orthogonal planes from volume data sets obtained with 3- and 4-dimensional ultrasonography. Simultaneous display of standard views used in fetal echocardiography and their orthogonal planes may provide novel ultrasonographic views for examination of the fetal heart and its vascular connections. This study was designed to determine the clinical utility of the multiplanar display in the examination of abnormal vascular connections to the fetal heart. METHODS: We reviewed 4-dimensional volume data se

Prenatal diagnosis of chondrodysplasia punctata tibia-metacarpal type using multidetector CT and three-dimensional reconstruction.

We report a case of chondrodysplasia punctata tibia-metacarpal type (CDP-TM) that was diagnosed prenatally using multidetector CT (MDCT) with three-dimensional (3-D) CT reconstructions. Prenatal US had shown severe thoracic hypoplasia and rhizomelic shortening of the limbs, raising the suspicion of thanatophoric dysplasia. However, MDCT showed punctate calcifications in the epiphyseal cartilage of the humeri and femora, carpal bones, and paravertebral region. On 3-D CT, the tibiae were much shorter than the fibulae, the humeri were very short and bowed, and severe platyspondyly was evident. Th

[Diagnosis and treatment of craniosynostoses: the usefulness of CT combined with 3-dimensional reconstruction].

Craniosynostoses are craniocerebral and craniofacial dysmorphic states, characterized by early closure of one or more cranial sutures. In this pathology the perpendicular growth of the bone to the involved suture is disturbed (Virchow's theory). Craniosynostoses can be divided into: 1) single-suture synostoses (scaphocephaly, plagiocephaly, trigonocephaly), 2) multiple-suture synostoses (brachycephaly, oxycephaly) and 3) craniofacial dysostoses. From 1976 to 1987, 63 children with craniosynostosis were studied in our Institute. All patients underwent radiologic and neuroradiologic research wit

Histogram flow mapping with optical coherence tomography for in vivo skin angiography of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Speckle statistics of flowing scatterers have been well documented in the literature. Speckle variance optical coherence tomography exploits the large variance values of intensity changes in time caused mainly by the random backscattering of light resulting from translational activity of red blood cells to map out the microvascular networks. A method to map out the microvasculature malformation of skin based on the time-domain histograms of individual pixels is presented with results obtained from both normal skin and skin containing vascular malformation. Results demonstrated that this method

Local plate/rod descriptors of 3D trabecular bone micro-CT images from medial axis topologic analysis.

PURPOSE: Trabecular bone microarchitecture is made of a complex network of plate and rod structures evolving with age and disease. The purpose of this article is to propose a new 3D local analysis method for the quantitative assessment of parameters related to the geometry of trabecular bone microarchitecture. METHODS: The method is based on the topologic classification of the medial axis of the 3D image into branches, rods, and plates. Thanks to the reversibility of the medial axis, the classification is next extended to the whole 3D image. Finally, the percentages of rods and plates as well

Ultrasound-Based Hepatorenal Index (HRI): Measurement Principles, Normal Values, and Clinical Application.

Ultrasound is a widely used, non-invasive, and radiation-free imaging modality that serves as a first-line diagnostic tool in hepatology due to its accessibility and real-time imaging capabilities. Recent advancements, such as shear-wave elastography and standardized techniques like the hepatorenal index (HRI), have improved the assessment of diffuse liver diseases despite their variable sonomorphologic presentation. The HRI is a quantitative ultrasound parameter that compares the echogenicity of the liver to that of the right renal cortex and serves as a non-invasive tool for detecting and gr

A PSC-tailored deep learning model for liver segmentation on fat-saturated T2-weighted MR: Robustness to hepatic dysmorphia and multicentre generalisability.

In this study, we aimed to identify an effective and accurate liver segmentation strategy for fat-saturated T2-weighted MRI in PSC patients, enabling multicentre validation of GLRM-RunEntropy, a radiomics feature which showed prognostic value. We evaluated three segmentation tools (Total Segmentator, Philips MR Liver Health, and an in-house trained nnU-Net model) across 183 PSC patients from internal and external cohorts. Ten segmentation algorithms derived from these tools were quantitatively assessed using DSC and HD against reference liver contours. The nnU-Net model trained on PSC-specific

A hybrid CNN-GCN framework for interpretable Alzheimer's disease diagnosis from MRI scans.

Medical image analysis for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) diagnosis faces two key challenges: capturing spatial dependencies between anatomically connected brain regions and providing clinically interpretable explanations. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) excel at local feature extraction and Vision Transformers handle long-range dependencies, neither explicitly models the relational structure between brain regions-critical for understanding disease progression. We propose a hybrid CNN-GCN framework that: (1) extracts patch-level features instead of using the full image, (2) constructs gra

Explainable MRI radiomics of the basal ganglia and ventral midbrain distinguishes Parkinson's disease, SWEDD, and healthy controls.

Distinguishing scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficit (SWEDD) from Parkinson's disease (PD) remains challenging on routine MRI. We extracted 1284 radiomic features from T1- and T2-weighted MRI within six a priori subcortical regions of interest in the PPMI cohort. A nested cross-validation framework (inner: univariate ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis with BH-FDR correction, mRMR, and LASSO; outer: 10-fold) was used for feature selection and classifier training. Five supervised models were evaluated, and performance was summarized by outer-fold micro- and macro-averaged AUCs with bootstrap 95% c

Annotation and characterization of lesions in breast tomosynthesis images.

Rapid adoption of artificial intelligence methods in breast imaging research emphasizes the need for large, appropriately curated image databases for development and validation. For digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), there are few public databases with only limited lesion annotation. Recently, we have developed Malmö Breast ImaginG (M-BIG), a large database of 104 791 women screened at Skåne University Hospital, Malmö. M-BIG also includes all images from the Malmö Breast Tomosynthesis Screening Trial, MBTST of 14 848 women, with 139 biopsy-confirmed cancers from DBT screening. To annotate les

Prostate Diffusion-weighted Imaging: Selecting the Optimal Repetition Time Using Synthetic Imaging Techniques.

The optimal TR for prostate diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) remains unclear. Given prostate cancers' shorter T1/T2 relaxation times versus benign tissues, TR adjustment may improve contrast. We evaluated 56 clinically significant cancers in 33 patients, comparing synthetic DWI (b-value = 2000 s/mm2) at TR500/1000/1500/2000 ms against conventional TR6000 ms. Assessments included contrast ratio, apparent SNR, lesion conspicuity score, DWI scores based on Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) v2.1, and background suppression. TR6000 showed significantly lower contrast ratio but hi

A two-stage deep learning model with segmentation-guided top-K slice selection for patient-level PAS prediction on MRI.

OBJECTIVE: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) can cause severe obstetric complications, and accurate preoperative assessment is critical. However, heterogeneous MRI manifestations and the high cost of fine placental annotations limit deep learning applications. This study developed and validated a two-stage segmentation-guided MRI framework for automated placental localization, ROI selection, and patient-level PAS prediction. METHODS: A total of 170 third-trimester placental MRI cases were included in the internal cohort, comprising 87 PAS and 83 non-PAS cases. Data were split at the patient lev

HOI-brain: A novel multi-channel transformers framework for brain disorder diagnosis by accurately extracting signed higher-order interactions from fMRI data.

Accurately characterizing the higher-order interactions of brain regions and effectively extracting the interpretable higher-order organizational patterns from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data are crucial for the diagnosis of brain diseases. However, current graph models mainly focus on pairwise patterns, as well as triadic patterns within the brain while overlooking more higher-order patterns with signs, limiting an integrated understanding of brain-wide communication. To address these challenges, we propose HOI-Brain (Higher-Order Interaction in Brain Network), a novel compu

Comparative evaluation of training strategies using partially labelled datasets for segmentation of white matter hyperintensities and stroke lesions in FLAIR MRI.

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) and ischaemic stroke lesions (ISL) are key imaging biomarkers of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) detectable on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The development of robust deep learning models to automatically segment and differentiate these pathologies remains challenging. Specifically, WMH and ISL frequently co-occur within the same subject and present as visually confounding hyperintensities on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences, complicating their accurate delineation. To address the scarcity of fully annotated cohorts, we systemati

KGT: Knowledge-guided graph transformer for neurodegenerative disease diagnosis and brain age prediction with MRI.

Deep learning methods have significantly advanced the analysis of brain imaging data for various downstream tasks such as disease diagnosis and age prediction. However, most existing methods train deep models on large amounts of imaging data, neglecting prior domain knowledge about brain structure and disease. To address this limitation, we propose KGT, a knowledge-guided graph transformer network that integrates medical domain knowledge with brain images to learn more relevant features and complex associations from regions of interest (ROIs), achieving superior performance in multiple tasks i

SupReMix: Supervised contrastive learning for medical imaging regression with mixup.

In medical image analysis, regression plays a critical role in computer-aided diagnosis. It enables quantitative measurements such as age prediction from structural imaging, cardiac function quantification, and molecular measurement from PET scans. While deep learning has shown promise for these tasks, most approaches focus solely on optimizing regression loss or model architecture, neglecting the quality of learned feature representations which are crucial for robust clinical predictions. Directly applying representation learning techniques designed for classification to regression often resu
