Psychosocial functioning in a group of Swedish adults with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism.

This study reports on psychosocial functioning in Swedish adults with Asperger syndrome (AS) or high-functioning autism (HFA). A systematically selected sample of patients and relatives was interviewed concerning their psychosocial situation. The majority was living independently. All persons but one were unemployed. None was married and none had children. Only a few had some kind of partner. Most persons needed a high level of public and/or private support. The overall adjustment was rated good in 12 percent, fair in 75 percent and poor in 12 percent. Adult persons with AS/HFA have extensive

Hostile attributional tendencies in maltreated children.

The hostile attributional tendencies of maltreated children in elementary school across key relationship figures (i.e., parents, teachers, and peers), the relation between children's hostile attributional tendencies and the frequency and severity of maltreatment, and the role of children's hostile attributions of their parents in mediating the relation between maltreatment and children's hostile attributions of unfamiliar peers were examined. The sample consisted of 44 maltreated and 56 nonmaltreated children (females = 51) of mixed ethnicity. Subjects were administered a 20-item measure of at

Nicotine, alcohol, methamphetamine, and inhalant dependence: a comparison of clinical features with the use of a new clinical evaluation form.

The purpose of the present study was to develop a new clinical evaluation form to compare the clinical features of nicotine dependence with those associated with alcohol, methamphetamine, and inhalant dependence. The clinical evaluation form consisted of six scoring items: subjective effects, tolerance, liking (of drug), social disturbance, withdrawal syndrome, and acute psychic and acute physical disorders. A preliminary clinical investigation was performed to test the validity of the evaluation form. Study subjects were those showing dependence on nicotine (n = 25), alcohol (n = 36), methamp

Extramarital sexuality: implications for marital therapists.

Although large numbers of clients approach marital therapists with concerns about extramarital behavior (ES), little has been written specifically about the implications of ES for practitioners. This paper uses a script theory framework to suggest why there are important attitude-behavior discrepancies concerning ES and how these differences may affect therapy. The authors also examine research findings concerning ES which do not support some widely held beliefs. This discussion includes a list of seven factors which therapist may utilize to differentiate diverse ES experiences and help couple

Possible drivers of self-harm severity - relative contributions of post-traumatic stress and levels of personality functioning - results from the Extreme Challenges project.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm (SH) is common, but its severity varies. Severe cases may involve extensive hospitalization and high suicide risk. Although SH is associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), personality disorder (PD), and complex cases of PD-PTSD comorbidity, factors related to SH severity are sparsely researched. AIMS: The study aims to investigate how SH severity relates to PTSD symptoms and different domains of personality functioning. The study also aims to explore indirect associations of interpersonal functioning, PTSD symptoms and SH severity. METHODS: In a multicenter

Correlates of pre-exposure prophylaxis amongst transgender women of color taking gender-affirming hormone therapy: Findings from the TURNNT cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The Trying to Understand Relationships, Networks, and Neighborhoods Among Transgender Women of Color (TURNNT) Cohort Study provides a unique opportunity to identify correlates of PrEP use amongst transgender women of color taking gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT). METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from the TURNTT Cohort Study, restricting our sample to those taking GAHT. We examined individual, interpersonal, and structural characteristics in association with current PrEP use using bivariate and multivariable models. RESULTS: Healthcare factors played a critical role among

Empathy profiles in posttraumatic stress disorder: A person-centered approach to understanding emotion dysregulation and psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can experience significant emotion dysregulation and interpersonal impairments, with emerging evidence implicating alterations in empathy as a contributing factor. Prior research links specific empathy dimensions (e.g., personal distress, perspective taking) to psychopathology; however, little is known about how patterns across empathy dimensions may map onto distinct profiles, which in turn may be related to different clinical outcomes. The identification of empathy profiles in PTSD could provide the opportunity to tailor traum

Interpersonal Health Care Discrimination and Delayed Alcohol Use Treatment Among Sexual Minority Adults With Multiple Stigmatized Identities.

Experiences of prejudice and discrimination contribute to heightened risk for alcohol use-related harm among sexual minority (SM) individuals. Discrimination in health care settings can also reduce help-seeking and treatment engagement. However, most research has focused on only one form of discrimination in isolation. This study used an intersectional stigma lens to examine associations between interpersonal health care discrimination and delayed alcohol use treatment among SM adults with multiple stigmatized identities. Interpersonal health care discrimination-based on one's sexual orientati

Identity disturbance in dimensional and categorical models of personality disorder: The incremental value of self-rated identity and narrative identity.

Identity disturbance is increasingly considered to drive personality disorder (PD) onset. Previous research has investigated how identity relates to PD using either self-report scales or narratives to assess identity. Few studies have investigated how both operationalizations relate to one another and to models of PD. More so, no study has investigated whether a narrative identity assessment offers additional explanatory power in understanding PD, beyond what is captured by a self-rated identity assessment, or vice versa. We aimed to address these gaps by administering a rating scale measuring

Women's experiences of trauma, the psychosocial impact and health service needs during the perinatal period.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic events are associated with psychological and physical health problems for women in the perinatal period (i.e., pregnancy-12-months after childbirth). Despite the negative impact of trauma on perinatal women, the long-term impact of such diverse trauma and women's experience during the perinatal period remains understudied. METHODS: This study explored two research questions: 1) What are the psychological experiences of perinatal women who have experienced interpersonal traumatic events? And 2) What are the service needs and gaps expressed by women relating to perinatal m

Social motivational processing and interpersonal function in aging cocaine smokers.

Illicit drug use among aging cohorts is increasing, yet little is known about functional impairments in older drug users. Given the importance of social integration for aging and documented social decrements in cocaine users, we examined social function and its neurocognitive substrates in aging cocaine users relative to carefully matched non-cocaine users. Regular (≥twice/week), long-term (≥15 years) cocaine smokers 50-60 years old (COCs; n = 22; four women) and controls (CTRLs; n = 19; four women) underwent standardized probes of social reward and threat processing during functional magnetic

Antagonism trait facets and comprehensive psychosocial disability: Comparing information across self, informant, and interviewer reports.

It is widely known that personality traits collectively discussed as the Dark Triad are antagonistic and associated with poor interpersonal relationships, but few studies have examined how specific facets of antagonism are associated with psychosocial adjustment or how antagonism relates to psychosocial adjustment other than interpersonal functioning. The purpose of this study was to examine how 6 antagonism facets-manipulativeness, grandiosity, attention-seeking, hostility, callousness, and deceitfulness-relate to comprehensive psychosocial functional domains (i.e., well-being, interpersonal …

Treatment for PTSD related to childhood abuse: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood abuse is associated with features of affect regulation and interpersonal disturbances that substantially contribute to impairment. Existing treatments do not address these problems or the difficulties they may pose in the exploration of trauma memories, an efficacious and frequently recommended approach to resolving PTSD. The authors evaluated the benefits and risks of a treatment combining an initial preparatory phase of skills training in affect and interpersonal regulation (STAIR) followed by exposure by comparing it again

From narcissistic vulnerability to Hikikomori: depression and online-offline relational discrepancy among South Korean young adults.

INTRODUCTION: Social withdrawal (Hikikomori) has emerged as a significant public health concern among South Korean young adults. This study investigates how Hikikomori tendencies are associated with the interaction between internal psychological vulnerability and discrepancies between online and offline relational experiences. METHODS: In a cross-sectional survey, data from 352 South Korean young adults (aged 19-34; 156 males, 44.3%) were analyzed using a moderated mediation model (PROCESS Macro Model 7). Measures included the Pathological Narcissism Inventory-Vulnerability scale (PNV), the 2

Love in the time of Zoom: how intimacy modulates brain and behaviour synchrony in face-to-face versus video communication.

This study explores how video-mediated communication (VMC) and face-to-face communication (FTF) affect social bonding in relationships of varying intimacy. Using hyperscanning fNIRS and dyadic behavioural analysis, data from 72 dyads (36 romantic couples and 36 friends) were analysed. Results revealed an intimacy-by-modality interaction: couples showed better behavioural coordination and higher interpersonal neural synchrony (INS) in the 0.081-0.09 Hz band during FTF, while friends had better synchrony in VMC. In the 0.038-0.046 Hz band, friends exhibited greater INS during FTF, and couples sh

Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Disengagement Coping: Associations with Emotions of Youth At-Risk for Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Families in which a parent has Huntington's disease (HD) are faced with significant stressors that can contribute to difficulties in communicating together about illness-related concerns. Family members who use more disengagement coping strategies, including denial and avoidance, to deal with illness-related stressors may have the greatest challenges to effective communication. OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the associations of intrapersonal and interpersonal disengagement coping responses with observed and reported emotions of adolescents and young adults (AYA) at genetic

Effects of oral isotretinoin treatment for acne vulgaris patients on anger responses and the relationship with temperament.

OBJECTIVE: Isotretinoin is the only medication against all the factors involved in acne vulgaris pathogenesis. The aim of our study was to verify whether patients with acne vulgaris receiving isotretinoin therapy exhibit elevated anger levels and to observe the correlation between age, temperament traits, and anger. METHODS: The study group comprised a sum of 100 cases, involving 50 individuals with acne vulgaris-required high-dose retinol therapy and 50 controls who did not start any medication. RESULTS: Our study showed that anger levels increased with drug use. A positive correlation betw

Barriers to Maternal and Neonatal Healthcare in Cameroon: A Qualitative Study of Key Stakeholder for mMIST Intervention Adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Eliminating maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality are global health priorities. Cameroon has some of the highest levels of maternal and neonatal mortality in the world. Evidence-based maternal healthcare is vital to ensuring women's and infants' health; however, offering such services in low-income countries is often challenging. Mobile health interventions have the potential to overcome longstanding public health barriers to fill gaps in maternal and infant care. This is among the first qualitative studies in Cameroon that examines individual and interpersonal barriers to

Cumulative childhood interpersonal trauma is associated with reduced cortical differentiation between threat and non-threat faces in posttraumatic stress disorder adults.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder and childhood trauma frequently co-occur. Both are associated with abnormal neural responses to salient emotion stimuli. As childhood trauma is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder, differentiating between their neurophysiological effects is necessary to elucidate the neural pathways by which childhood trauma exposure contributes to increased posttraumatic stress disorder risks. METHODS: Face-specific N170 evoked response potentials for backward-masked (non-conscious) and conscious threat (fear, angry) and non-threat (happy) faces were measu
