Biomechanical evaluation of attachment geometries for labio-lingual inclinations in maxillary incisors of Class II Division 2 malocclusion: A 3D finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Class II Division 2 malocclusion presents biomechanical challenges due to retroclined maxillary incisors, often complicated by soft tissue constraints. Clear aligner therapy (CAT), though patient-friendly, shows limitations in predictably modifying labiolingual inclination. Recent attachment design advancements offer potential solutions but require biomechanical validation. Finite element modelling (FEM) serves as an effective analytical tool to evaluate these mechanics. The present study aims to compare the efficacy of three attachment geometries in expressing labiolingual inclina

Quantitative evaluation of vertical control in orthodontic camouflage treatment for skeletal class II with hyperdivergent facial type.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we sought to quantify the influence of vertical control assisted by a temporary anchorage device (TAD) on orthodontic treatment efficacy for skeletal class II patients with a hyperdivergent facial type and probe into the critical factors of profile improvement. METHODS: A total of 36 adult patients with skeletal class II and a hyperdivergent facial type were included in this retrospective case-control study. To exclude the effect of sagittal anchorage reinforcement, the patients were divided into two groups: a maxillary maximum anchorage (MMA) group (N = 17), in whi

Influence of tonsillar grade on the dental arch measurements.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the palatine tonsils in the development of dental intra-arch and interarch abnormalities is often brought up in the literature, but it remains controversial. Data on the probable relationship between enlarged tonsils and the occurrence of orthodontic abnormalities are subjective. The purpose of this study was to seek an association between the space occupied by the palatine tonsils and the dental arch measurements. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on a group of children subdivided into 5 groups according to the standardized tonsillar hypertrophy grading

Space closure in the maxillary posterior area through the maxillary sinus.

A common dilemma in adult orthodontic treatment is deciding how best to treat missing posterior teeth. One treatment option is to orthodontically close the space. But closure can be difficult, especially if the open space is in the maxillary posterior area, because tooth movement through the maxillary sinus is limited. The increased difficulty of moving teeth in the maxillary sinus is similar to moving a tooth in the atrophic posterior mandibular ridge. If space closure is selected as a treatment method, proper mechanics and light forces should be applied. In this article, we report movement o

Canine autotransplantation: effect of extraction site preservation with a titanium prosthesis and a bioresorbable membrane.

The permanent canine is the most frequently displaced or impacted tooth. The standard treatment for an impacted canine includes surgical exposure and orthodontic alignment. Autotransplantation is a treatment alternative for canines with complete root formation. The purpose of this article is to report a canine autotransplantation where the extraction site was preserved with a titanium prosthesis and a bioresorbable membrane. The autotransplanted canine had minimal root resorption and no ankylosis.

Dental team management for a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome: case report.

Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by a short neck, a low posterior hairline, and limited head movement. Occasionally, patients with KFS may also show signs of deafness, intellectual disability, cardiac malformation, palpebral ptosis, facial nerve paralysis, cleft palate, and scoliosis. Although some researchers have documented this syndrome, scant attention has been paid to craniomaxillofacial manifestations and dental treatment of patients with KFS. The objective of this case report was to describe the planning and execution of dental treatment for a 1

Comparison of the intrusion effects on the maxillary incisors between implant anchorage and J-hook headgear.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, miniscrews have been used to provide anchorage during orthodontic treatment, especially for incisor intrusion. Miniscrews during incisor intrusion are commonly used in implant orthodontics. Traditionally, effective incisor intrusion has been accomplished with J-hook headgear. In this study, we compared the effect of incisor intrusion, force vector, and amount of root resorption between implant orthodontics and J-hook headgear. METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs from 8 patients in the implant group and 10 patients in the J-hook headgear group were analyzed for i

Maxillary canine-first premolar transposition in the permanent dentition.

Maxillary canine premolar transposition is the most frequently reported transposition type, which many orthodontists face. Although correcting the transposed tooth order is not advised after the eruption of the permanent tooth, several articles published in the last decade demonstrated nonextraction treatment of transposition using fixed mechanics. This article describes the nonextraction treatment of a complete transposition between a maxillary left canine and a first premolar, using similar mechanics as suggested earlier. The correct tooth order was established with a functional Class I cani

Unilateral correction of space loss in the mixed dentition.

Distalization of maxillary molars is indicated for correction of Class II dental malocclusion and for space gain in cases of space deficiency. The ideal treatment with an intraoral fixed appliance for molar distalization should fulfill the following requirements: patient compliance; acceptable esthetics; comfort; minimum anterior anchor loss (as evidenced by inclination of incisors); bodily movement of the molars to avoid undesirable effects and unstable outcomes; and minimum time required during sessions for placement and activations. The purpose of this paper was to present an alternative tr

Orthodontic treatment of patients using bisphosphonates: a report of 2 cases.

The pharmacologic agent bisphosphonate has recently received much attention in the dental literature. Bisphosphonates in oral or intravenous forms are used to treat various diseases such as certain cancers, bone- and calcium-related disorders, osteoporosis, and osteopenia. Bisphosphonates inhibit bone turnover and result in increased bone-mineral density. The most serious dental side effect of bisphosphonate treatment (particularly when it is administered intravenously) is, paradoxically, osteonecrosis of the mandible or the maxilla represented by exposed nonhealing bone. Other related complic

The benefits of aesthetic orthodontic brackets in patients requiring multiple MRI scanning.

MRI scans are increasingly used diagnostically in medicine. Scans of the head and neck region can be distorted by metallic components in the vicinity. This paper discusses the consideration for aesthetic brackets (with no metal components) on all teeth including molars in patients requiring MRI scans and especially if those need to be repeated on a regular basis.
