OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The successful harvest and transplant of a fibular flap depends on many factors, including healthy inflow and outflow systems. A contraindication to harvesting a fibular flap is disease of the lower extremity arterial system; therefore, preoperative evaluation of the arterial system is routine. Preoperative evaluation of the venous system is not routine, unless there is clinical suspicion of venous disease.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence of BRAF, SMO, KRAS, HRAS, NRAS, FGRF2, and CTNNB1 gene mutations in Chinese ameloblastoma (AM) patients and explore their associations with clinical characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a serious side effect of bisphosphonate (BP) medication. Tooth extractions are the most frequent causes for BRONJ. In some cases BRONJ is observed spontaneously, with some anatomic sites carrying a higher risk. Sunitinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is established in renal cell carcinoma and is known to lead to oral mucositis as a side effect, which in BP patients may additionally raise the risk of BRONJ.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of dose fractionation and other factors on the development of late complications in mandibular bone, muscle, and mucosa of the oral cavity after external beam radiation therapy for carcinoma of the tonsil.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the range of all histologically diagnosed odontogenic cysts along with age range, sex distribution and site of presentation over a 30-year period.
METHODS: All entries for odontogenic cysts occurring during 1975-2004 inclusive were retrieved and analysed for demographic data.
RESULTS: A total of 55,446 specimens were received, of these 7121 (12.8%) specimens were diagnosed as odontogenic cysts. Radicular cyst was the most common diagnosis (52.3%), followed by dentigerous cyst (18.1) and odontogenic keratocysts (11.6%).

An unsuspected severely stenosed common carotid artery that compromised a free flap for mandibular reconstruction is described. To our knowledge no one has advocated the assessment of the carotid tree before transfer of free tissue. We suggest that patients with several risk factors for peripheral vascular disease should have colour flow duplex imaging of the carotid system if transfer of free tissue is being considered.

Panoramic radiographs were taken of 392 Estonian schoolchildren (33% boys and 67% girls) aged 14-17 years, 197 in Tartu and 195 in Tallinn. The mean number of permanent teeth was 31.5. In 14% of the children one to four teeth (excluding wisdom teeth) were missing. The frequencies of missing wisdom teeth and supernumerary teeth agreed with those in the literature, being 17% and 3%, respectively.
