398 patients with clinical signs of tetanic syndrome were examined. Their ischemic and/or hyperventilation tests were positive. The parameters of the wave M were analysed i.e. latency, amplitude, duration, shape and strength of stimulus. The signs of higher irritability of the peripheral nervous system were found out in women; they diminished during age. The ratio between men and women was 1:3.6. The significant differences were determined between the groups of negative and positive tests. In the group of positive tests we noticed the dependence of the wave M on the positivity of ischemic, hyp

Forty-nine patients with Bell's palsy were studied neurophysiologically within 10 days of the onset of symptoms and the results analysed according to the clinical outcome. Electroneuronography was not helpful in predicting outcome at this stage. The presence of a blink reflex was a good prognostic sign and all patients with an intact blink reflex recovered well.

Primary hypertrophic neuritis (hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy types I and III) can easily be characterized in affected families by nerve conduction measurement. Such a study is reported in a family with two affected subjects from two successive generations, a man and one of his daughters (type I). Nerve conduction velocities (NCV) were dramatically low (down to 10 m/sec) in three other subjects from the second generation without any obvious clinical symptom. These cases show again the lack of correlation between electrophysiological data and clinical features in these affections. They

Previous studies have described a neurogenic-induced ventilatory tachypneic response during exercise. The present paper compares the breathing pattern of control and myopathic human subjects submitted to exercise. Peripheral neurogenic stimuli (PNS) at the same level of oxygen consumption should be enhanced in myopathic subjects as a consequence of muscular mass loss. Myopathic individuals showed hyperventilation (increased VeO2 and VeCO2) which was mostly due to higher respiratory frequency. The shorter respiratory cycle was due chiefly to Te reduction, since the Ti/TTOT ratio was greater in

The effects of a polypeptide toxin of 25,000 Da from the marine snail Conus striatus (CsTx) on sodium channels in mouse neuroblastoma cells and rat brain synaptosomes were studied. CsTx slowed sodium channel inactivation without altering the time course of activation of the channels. The voltage dependence of sodium channel inactivation was shifted to more negative membrane potentials and made less steep. Peak sodium currents were increased, and the voltage dependence of activation was shifted to more negative membrane potentials. The action of the toxin was voltage-dependent. Maximum toxin ef

We studied nine patients with complete thoracic spinal cord injury in order to investigate distal electrophysiologic and end organ function. Studies included motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities, spinal and cortical somatosensory evoked responses, bulbocavernosus reflex responses, cystometry and colonic compliance, motor and myoelectrical activity. These studies confirmed an intact peripheral nervous system, as well as normal nerve root, cauda equina, conus medullaris and distal spinal cord function. Cystometry demonstrated decreased bladder capacity and inability to suppress detrusor

Two patients suffering from the stationary form of hereditary spastic paraplegia, father and son, are described. While in the father the disease - probably because of congenital clubfeet - led to flexion contractures of the hip- and knee-joints, the son in contrary showed extreme genua recurvata. In spite of these contradictionary findings, neurological examination of both patients led to the diagnosis of stationary form of hereditary spastic paraplegia. Both patients had normal latencies of their somatosensory evoked peroneal cortical potentials (Peron-SEP). It is known that the progredient f

The anterior interosseous nerve syndrome is a rare entrapment neuropathy of the median nerve. It is a pure motor deficit characterized by pinch loss. Anterior interosseous nerve lesions are easily assessed by EMG. The data from literature being incomplete in a majority of cases (85%), we propose EMG criteria to assert the presence of an anterior interosseous nerve syndrome and to exclude other diagnoses. The study of the anterior interosseous nerve in 20 healthy patients shows that the difference in motor potential latency between the healthy and the non-healthy side is the most predictive sti

The effects of different substances affecting some or other chains of cAMP metabolism on the properties of transmembrane current induced by cAMP injection have been studied in Helix pomatia neurons. It was found that preinjection of papaverine or adenosine triphosphate from a microelectrode into the neuron increases the cAMP-current amplitude. Injection of dibutyryl-cAMP does not induce transmembrane current by itself but results in a noticeable reversible inhibition of cAMP-current. Extracellular administration of trifluoperazine produces either an increase or a decrease of the cAMP-current a

We describe a patient with chronic asymmetric motor neuropathy, which began in the upper extremity. The paretic muscles showed abundant fasciculations and myokymia but only little amyotrophy. Electrophysiologic examination revealed proximal multifocal persistent conduction block (CB) not located at the usual entrapment sites, and arrhythmic isolated or grouped fasciculation potentials originating distally on blocked axons. Over the years, new CBs developed, which led to tetraplegia, and amyotrophy slowly increased with progressive denervation. This patient differs from the cases of chronic acq

Thirty women with idiopathic anorectal incontinence were investigated by nerve conduction studies. Twenty-two (73%) patients had abnormal nerve conduction studies. In 7 (23%) of these patients there was conduction delay in the cauda equina between L1 and L4 vertebral levels but in the remainder the distal innervation of the pelvic sphincters was abnormal.

A 56-year-old male with a 2-year history of bronchial asthma, together with pulmonary infiltration and marked eosinophilia, developed a subacute multifocal sensorimotor neuropathy. Electrodiagnostic studies demonstrated both multifocal and generalized nerve involvement. Sural nerve and muscle biopsies revealed axonal degeneration with almost complete loss of myelinated fibres, lymphomononuclear vasculitis of interstitial vasa nervorum without eosinophils, and neurogenic atrophy of muscle without angiitis. Although eosinophilia decreased drastically with corticosteroid treatment, neuropathy rap

Depth-profile, current-source-density (CSD) and impedance analysis were used to determine the current generators of secondary waves "a" and "b" in the response evoked in pyriform cortex (PC) of the urethane anesthetized rat following OB or LOT stimulation. Positive peaks (sinks) in the second-derivative curves of the "a" and "b" waves were localized at 50-75 and 225-250 microns deep, respectively. Cortical impedance was significantly (p less than 0.01) correlated with the cell packing density of PC layers, being maximal close to the zero dipole point of the gross evoked response; magnitude of

Twelve patients with genuine stress incontinence of urine were investigated using manometric and electrophysiological techniques. All were shown to have slowed conduction in the perineal branch of the pudendal nerve which innervates the periurethral striated sphincter muscle. The mean perineal nerve terminal motor latency in these patients was 3.9 +/- 0.8 (ms) and in 20 age and parity matched control subjects was 2.0 +/- 0.2 (ms) (P less than 0.001). These results are consistent with a neurogenic factor in patients with genuine stress incontinence of urine which may have implications regarding

QX-222 (the trimethyl analogue of lignocaine), methylxylocholine, lignocaine and pentobarbitone were iontophoresed intracellularly into cat lumbosacral motoneurones. Iontophoresis and recording was either from a triple-barrelled microelectrode unit or from two separately advanced microelectrodes. QX-222 and methylxylocholine caused a very slow reversible block of the current-evoked and antidromic action potentials (AP) with no significant change of membrane potential (EM). Lignocaine had a minimal blocking effect on the AP. No change, or only a small decrease, of membrane slope conductance (GM

Recordings were made from facial muscles and the facial nerve near its entrance into the brain stem in patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS). The purpose of this study was to determine if the synkinesis commonly seen in patients with HFS could be linked to ephaptic transmission at the presumed site of the lesion (at the root entry zone (REZ) of the facial nerve). When the mandibular branch of the facial nerve was electrically stimulated, a response could be recorded from the orbicularis oculi muscles during the operation. The latency of the earliest response was 11.03 +/- 0.66 msec (mean respon

Recently the rather frequent occurrence of benign monoclonal gammopathy (BMG) has been reported in peripheral neuropathy. Sometimes this syndrome is part of a multisystemic disorder in which organomegaly, endocrine disturbances, skin changes and focal bone lesions may also occur. The clinical picture and the cerebro-spinal fluid findings resemble the chronic relapsing Guillain-Barré syndrome. The polyneuropathy seems to be of the primarily demyelinating type. The pathogenetic relationship with the gammopathy is as yet not clear, but treatment of the plasma cell dyscrasia has a favourable effec

When ligatures were used to constrict the proximal tibial nerve in rabbits, nerve fibres distal to the site of constriction underwent a reduction in axonal and external fibre diameter, and in conduction velocity. Distal changes could be detected within 7-12 days of the onset of constriction; removal of the ligatures was followed by partial recovery. When paranodal myelin damage occurred in the distal tibial nerve, it showed the typical non-random distribution of secondary demyelination, with multiple paranodal defects on some fibres and complete sparing of others. These findings emphasize the

In 40 controls and 19 patients with neoplastic lesions of the eighth cervical and first thoracic nerve roots confirmed by myelography, ulnar F-wave conduction velocity (FWCV) was estimated using the shortest F-wave latency (FWL). F-waves were recorded from needle electrodes inserted in the abductor digiti minimi manus muscle after stimulation of the ulnar nerve at the wrist. Motor nerve conduction velocities of distal ulnar segments were normal. It was found that the ulnar FWCV decreases significantly with increasing age. This is not true for FWL. During the initial examinations ulnar FWCV was
