[Personality and patient satisfaction after orthodontic treatment].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to examine, among adult patients who had completed orthodontic treatment, the relationship between treatment satisfaction and personality type. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was an observational, comparative, cross-sectional study based on a survey conducted during the first three months following the completion of active orthodontic treatment. The required sample size was calculated in advance. A total of 74 patients (30 men and 44 women aged 18 to 40) were included: 55 with metal multi-bracket appliances, 9 with ceramic multi-bracket appliances, and 10 wi

Evaluating the Exposome Score for Schizophrenia in a Transdiagnostic Psychosis Cohort: Associations With Psychosis Risk, Symptom Severity, and Personality Traits.

BACKGROUND: Investigations of causal pathways for psychosis can be guided by the identification of environmental risk factors. A recently developed composite risk tool, the exposome score for schizophrenia (ES-SCZ), which controls for intercorrelations between risk factors, has shown fair to good performance. We tested the transdiagnostic psychosis classifier performance of the ES-SCZ with the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network for Intermedial Phenotypes data and examined its relationship with clinical-level outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We computed the case-control classifier performance for the ES-SCZ

Adolescent extraversion and agreeableness predict adult alcohol use: A 22-Year prospective study.

The Five Factor Model (FFM or Big 5) traits of extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness, have all been associated with alcohol use. However, the vast majority of these studies have used cross-sectional designs, limiting the ability to evaluate the temporal relationships between childhood personality traits in adult alcohol use patterns. In the current prospective community cohort study (N = 329), we examine the predictive value of FFM traits measured in childhood and adolescence (starting at 6-9 years of age; well before the typical age at which adolescents begi

Problematic Use of Video Games, Social Media, and Alcohol: Exploring Reciprocal Relations with the Big Five Personality Traits in a Longitudinal Design.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The problematic use of video games (PG), social media (PSMU), and alcohol (PAU) is widespread from adolescence onwards. According to theoretical models, personality traits are relevant for these problematic behavioral patterns; however, only very few longitudinal studies are available. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate for the first time whether Big Five personality dimensions (BFPD) are predictors for the development of PG, PSMU, or PAU, or conversely, whether these behavioral patterns are predictive of the BFPD. METHODS: Surveys were conducted over

The relationship between personality traits and health-related quality of life after mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes major societal burden and may negatively influence an individual's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Personality factors have been linked to persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS), and PPCS have been found to affect HRQoL. However, there is a knowledge gap concerning the association between personality traits and HRQoL after mild-to-moderate TBI. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between personality traits and HRQoL in patients with mild-to-moderate TBI at 15 months post-injury, while controlling for socio-demographic

Psychosocial and cognitive determinants of 10-year depressive symptom trajectories in patients with cardiovascular disease: The SMART-Medea Study.

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged and older adults presenting clinically relevant depressive symptoms are often undiagnosed. Understanding the determinants of late-life depressive symptoms could improve prognosis. Further, individuals with manifest cardiovascular disease (CVD) are at an increased risk of depression. This study investigated if psychosocial and cognitive factors are associated with depressive symptom trajectories in individuals with CVD. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the SMART-Medea study of 752 participants (median age 62 years, women 18 %) with a history of CVD was used. Psychosocial

Age and gender differences in narcissism: A comprehensive study across eight measures and over 250,000 participants.

Age and gender differences in narcissism have been studied often. However, considering the rich history of narcissism research accompanied by its diverging conceptualizations, little is known about age and gender differences across various narcissism measures. The present study investigated age and gender differences and their interactions across eight widely used narcissism instruments (i.e., Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale, Dirty Dozen, Psychological Entitlement Scale, Narcissistic Personality Disorder Symptoms from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of

A pilot study examining the relationship between chronic heroin use and telomere length among individuals of African ancestry.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has suggested a possible link between heroin use and shortened telomere length (TL), a marker of cellular aging and genomic stability. We sought to replicate these findings by examining the relationship between TL and heroin use among individuals of African ancestry. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined TL among 57 participants [17.5 % female; mean age 48.0 (±6.80) years] of African ancestry with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and a mean heroin use duration of 18.2 (±10.7) years. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to calculate TL as the ratio

Causal Effect of Relative Carbohydrate Intake on Hypertension through Psychological Well-Being and Adiposity: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Observations of the association between carbohydrate intake and hypertension are inconsistent, with mediating pathways unclear. We aimed to investigate the causal effect of relative carbohydrate intake on hypertension and the mediating roles of psychological well-being and adiposity. Using summary-level statistics of genome-wide association studies of European ancestry, we conducted univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) to estimate the bidirectional causal association between relative carbohydrate intake (total energy-adjusted, mean: 42-51%) and hypertension (FinnGen: 42,8

Well-being in social interactions: Examining personality-situation dynamics in face-to-face and computer-mediated communication.

Decades of research show that people's social lives are linked to their well-being. Yet, research on the relationship between social interactions and well-being has been largely inconclusive with regard to the effects of person-situation interactions, such as the interplay between contextual factors (e.g., interactions occurring in physical vs. digital contexts, different interaction partners) and dispositional tendencies (e.g., Big Five personality traits). Here, we report on exploratory and confirmatory findings from three large studies of college students (Study 1: N = 1,360; Study 2: N = 8

Trajectories of adjustment disorder symptoms in post-treatment breast cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) may experience problems to adjust to their situation after cancer treatment completion. In case of severe distress, an adjustment disorder (AD) might develop. This study investigates the course of AD symptoms during 1 year and its predictors in BCS up to 5 years post-treatment. METHODS: BCS completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. HADS total scores were defined as no mental disorder (MD) symptoms (≤ 10), AD symptoms (11-14), and any other MD symptoms (≥ 15). Over the course of four assessments, sympto

Exploration of Psychological Mechanism of Smartphone Addiction Among International Students of China by Selecting the Framework of the I-PACE Model.

The I-PACE (interaction of person-affect-cognition-execution) model explains that the causes of addiction are the result of individual susceptibility (genetic and personality), psychopathological factors (negative emotions), and cognitive and affective factor interaction. The issue of smartphone addiction and its emerging effects are now becoming an essential social enigma. This study is aimed at exploring how personal, affective, cognitive, and execution factors accelerate the mechanism of smartphone addiction among international students. Randomly selected, six hundred international students

My Mind is Working Overtime-Towards an Integrative Perspective of Psychological Detachment, Work-Related Rumination, and Work Reflection.

In the literature on occupational stress and recovery from work, several facets of thinking about work during off-job time have been conceptualized. However, research on the focal concepts is currently rather diffuse. In this study we take a closer look at the five most well-established concepts: (1) psychological detachment, (2) affective rumination, (3) problem-solving pondering, (4) positive work reflection, and (5) negative work reflection. More specifically, we scrutinized (1) whether the five facets of work-related rumination are empirically distinct, (2) whether they yield differential
