BACKGROUND: Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS) resulting from thiamine deficiency is classically defined as including encephalopathy, ataxia, and ophthalmoplegia. Only 16% of autopsy-confirmed patients with WKS exhibit all three signs. Caine-positive WKS criteria include two or more of the following: nutritional deficiency, delirium or mild memory impairment, cerebellar dysfunction/ataxia, and oculomotor abnormalities.

Horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis (HGPPS) is a rare and autosomal recessive syndrome. We describe 2 cases of HGPPS which are the first documented in patients of African ancestry from an isolated population in Cape Verde. They demonstrated typical findings on neuro-ophthalmic examination and brain magnetic resonance imaging. One patient had novel heterozymous mutations of the ROB0 3 gene.

PURPOSE: To report the surgical outcomes of the superior oblique tuck procedure in the management of superior oblique palsies performed at a single centre over a 25-year period.
METHODS: A retrospective study of superior oblique tuck performed as a primary and secondary procedure by a single surgeon over a 25-year period between 1992 and 2016. We evaluated patient demographics, the angle of deviation pre- and post-surgery in prism dioptres (PD), amount of muscle tuck surgery performed (mm), complications (iatrogenic Brown's Syndrome) and improvement of diplopia post-operatively.

Frequency and natural history of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) were prospectively studied in 142 preterm infants with birth weight (BW) less than 1501 g and/or gestational age (GA) below 33 weeks, who were born in Malmö 1986-1990. Over a period of 2 years, 363 patients who had sustained a total of 438 midfacial fractures due to blunt trauma received a full ophthalmological examination within 1 week of injury. Of these, 72 patients (19.8%) developed diplopia. Diplopia was most common following road traffic accidents (31%) and least common with simple falls (10%). This report describes two patients with acute-onset ptosis, oculomotor dysfunction, ataxia and drowsiness, referable to the midbrain tegmentum. Both patients had previously suffered severe closed head injuries requiring craniotomy for cerebral decompression. We examined 14 patients with acute anteromedial pontomesencephalic infarctions for signs of vestibular and ocular motor dysfunction.
