BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) is an useful noninvasive tool to assess autonomic nervous system (ANS) function and may provide an insight into the understanding of the role of ANS in the pathogenesis of blood pressure (BP) abnormality in euvolemic continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 62 CAPD patients with normal hydration values (assessed by a bioimpedance spectroscopy device) were enrolled from our peritoneal dialysis (PD) unit. Patients were divided into three groups according to their BP: normotension (NT), hypertensio

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a profound sensory and autonomic nervous system disorder associated with an increased risk for sudden death. While bradycardia resulting from loss of sympathetic tone has been hypothesized to play a role in this mortality, extended in-home monitoring has failed to find evidence of low heart rates in children with FD. In order to better characterize the specific cardio-respiratory pathophysiology and autonomic dysregulation in patients with FD, 25 affected children and matched controls were studied with in-home technology, during day and night. Respiratory and hear

Slow-onset asthma deaths are characterized by eosinophilic airway infiltrates and thickening of the basal membrane, while rapid-onset asthma deaths are associated with fewer airway inflammatory changes, suggesting that bronchospasm may be responsible for the latter events. Airway tone is primarily controlled by the autonomous nervous system and can be pharmacologically modified. Therapies that stimulate the sympathetic beta(2) adrenoreceptor or inhibit the muscarinic receptor signal transduction induce bronchodilation. Parasympathetic (vagal) airway tone is enhanced in some asthmatics due to a

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is defined by the absence of intramural ganglia of Meissner and Auerbach along variable lengths of the gastrointestinal tract. Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) type B is characterized by the malformation of the parasympathetic submucous plexus of the gut. A connection appears to exist between these two enteric nervous system abnormalities. Due to the major role played by the RET proto-oncogene in HSCR, we sought to determine whether this gene was also related to INDB. dHPLC techniques were employed to screen the RET coding region in 23 patients presenting with IN

Sudden death at night is known to occur in young patients with insulin-dependent (Type 1) diabetes mellitus (IDDM) but the aetiology is uncertain. A cardiac arrhythmia has been postulated, but there has been little evidence to support this. We present the case of a 31-year-old man with IDDM of 17 years duration, who died suddenly while asleep. Over preceding months, he had had strict glycaemic control (HbA1 8.9%), normal 24 h blood pressure (mean 131 +/- 2.1/76 +/- 2.2 mmHg), no evidence of microangiopathy or endothelial dysfunction and normal standard clinical tests of autonomic function. Fifty-two subjects were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum. Ten of these subjects who became motion sick during the first session completed two additional sessions. Subjects' symptoms of motion sickness, perception of self-motion, electrogastrograms (EGGs), heart rate, mean successive differences of R-R intervals (RRI), and skin conductance were recorded for each session. The results from the first session indicated that the development of motion sickness was accompanied by increased EGG 4-9 cpm activity (gastric tachyarrhythmia), decreased mean successive differences of RRI, increased ski

Tracheobronchial smooth muscle tone may be affected by 4 nervous mechanisms: (1) Vagal cholinergic parasympathetic nerves, which are the main agents for resting tone and most reflex bronchoconstrictions. Their activity is blocked by atropinic drugs. (2) Sympathetic adrenergic dilator nerves, which may act mainly on beta-adrenoceptors in the pulmonary bronchi; alternatively, they may inhibit ganglionic transmission in the vagal constrictor pathway. (3) Vagal nonadrenergic dilator nerves (NAIS). The neurotransmitter at these nerves is probably vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), although pu

Systemic Sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disease that affects the skin and internal organs (i.e., gastrointestinal tract, lung, heart, kidney and peripheral nervous system). In the early phase, lung involvement is characterized by interstitial inflammatory alterations that are detected by bronchoalveolar lavage analysis and high resolution computed tomography (ground glass). As the disease progresses, fibrotic changes become evident and the diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) is impaired. Cardiac involvement in SSc can be manifested as myocardial disease, pericardial disease, conduc

The incidence of Parkinson's disease is increasing worldwide. The motor dysfunctions are the hallmark of the disease, but patients also experience non-motor impairments, and over 40% of the patients experience coexistent abnormalities, such as orthostatic hypotension. Exercise training has been suggested as a coping resource to alleviate Parkinson's disease symptoms and delay disease progression. However, the body of knowledge is showing that the cardiovascular response to exercise in patients with Parkinson's disease is altered. Adequate cardiovascular and hemodynamic adjustments to exercise

Ejaculation is the final stage of coitus in mammalian male and is mandatory for natural procreation. Two synchronized phases, emission and expulsion, form the ejaculatory response and involve specific organs and anatomical structures. The peripheral events leading to ejaculation are commanded by autonomic (sympathetic and parasympathetic) and somatic divisions of the nervous system. The autonomic and somatic motor efferents originate in spinal nuclei located in thoracolumbar and lumbosacral segments. Co-ordinated activation of autonomic and somatic spinal nuclei is orchestrated by a group of l

Systemic injection of antibodies against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) induces complement-mediated destruction of preganglionic nerve terminals in paravertebral sympathetic ganglia, but spares other AChE-rich structures, such as nerve terminals in prevertebral sympathetic ganglia, parasympathetic ganglia, and the neuromuscular junction. This pattern of differing sensitivity to "AChE immunolesion" might be explained by a differing expression of proteins that serve to protect host cells from complement activation. Two major complement regulatory proteins in rats are Crry, which interferes with the

Pregnancy is considered in the spotlight of creation of general adaptation syndrome. It was revealed that 85% and 58% of healthy non-pregnant women had an inadequate autonomous nervous system (ANS) and circulatory system response respectively. This favoured the labour activity malfunction in 20% of women in childbirth when an abdominal delivery was needed. A traditional subarachnoid anesthesia (SA) in control group was accompanied by decrease of blood pressure (BP) to the numbers requiring a medicamentous correction (as by literature data). However, the central haemodynamics measures has shown

INTRODUCTION: Increased volume of the urinary bladder causes urge to urinate and constricts the sphincter by increasing the tonus of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Activity of the autonomic nervous system (or sympatho-vagal balance) can be assessed by heart rate variability (HRV). Current study aimed to test in healthy young male participants whether HRV technique reflects increased sympathovagal balance during bladder distention as revealed by strong urge to urinate.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of young and apparently healthy 11 males agreed to participate to the current study. The

The pathogenesis of celiac disease is associated with an autoimmune process. The disease causes chronic inflammation of the small intestinal mucosa, which may affect the brain-gut axis. The activation of visceral receptors (gastrointestinal mechanoreceptor and osmoreceptor) in response to stomach distension caused by water ingestion has not been studied before. Our results showed reduced responsiveness of the autonomic nervous system to water ingestion in patients with celiac disease, which may lead to disturbances of gastric myoelectrical activity and depends on baseline autonomic activity. Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess changes in autonomic, behavioral, and acoustic measures in response to social stress in adults who stutter (AWS) compared to adults who do not stutter (ANS). Method Participants completed the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory ( Speilberger, Gorsuch, Luschene, Vagg, & Jacobs, 1983 ). In order to provoke social stress, participants were required to complete a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST-M, Kirschbaum, Pirke, & Hellhammer, 1993 ), which included completing a nonword reading task and then preparing and delivering a speech to wh
