Age at onset and language disturbances in Alzheimer's disease.

This study examined the effect of age at symptom onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) on the pattern of language disturbance. We assessed 150 consecutive patients with a clinical diagnosis of mild-to-moderate AD using the Western Aphasia Battery and a 100-item picture-naming test. A multivariate linear regression analysis examined the effect of age at onset after controlling for gender, education, severity of dementia and duration of the disease. Patients with early onset performed significantly worse than did patients with late onset on the word comprehension and sequential commands subtests. On

The profile of sabcomeline (SB-202026), a functionally selective M1 receptor partial agonist, in the marmoset.

1. Sabcomeline (SB-202026, 0.03 mg kg(-1), p.o.), a potent and functionally selective M1 receptor partial agonist, caused a statistically significant improvement in the performance of a visual object discrimination task by marmosets. No such improvement was seen after RS86 (0.1 mg kg(-1), p.o.). 2. Initial learning, which only required an association of object with reward and an appropriate response to be made, was not significantly affected. Reversal learning, which required both the extinction of the previously learned response and the acquisition of a new response strategy, was significantl

Language and Williams syndrome: how intact is "intact"?

It has been claimed that Williams syndrome (WS), a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, is characterized by serious cognitive deficits alongside intact language. The syndrome is often used as a prime example of the modularity of an innate faculty for morphosyntactic rules. We challenge this claim and hypothesize that morphosyntax, although surprisingly good given WS level of mental retardation, is by no means intact. We make an initial test of this hypothesis through an analysis of the receptive language of a group of English-speaking WS individuals on a standardized morphosyntactic test. We then

Attentional tracking and inhibition of return in dynamic displays.

Seven experiments were conducted to replicate, and extend, a finding by Tipper, Driver, and Weaver (1991). They reported evidence for dynamic, object-centered inhibition of return (IOR)--that is, coding of inhibition following a peripheral cue in coordinates that move with the previously cued object, providing a dynamic bias against reattending to that object. The present experiments used a variation of Posner and Cohen's (1984) spatial cuing paradigm. Subjects responded manually (simple reaction time) to a luminance increment in one of two peripheral boxes, one of which had previously been cu

Intellectual and developmental differences in external memory strategies.

External memory strategies (e.g., moving objects) were investigated in 11-year-old children with mild mental retardation and 7- and 11-year-olds without mental retardation. Participants attempted to place objects at specified spatial locations after hearing sequences of tape-recorded instructions. During baseline, children with mental retardation and 7-year-olds used external strategies more frequently than did 11-year-olds. All three groups used external strategies after prompting that represented the correct spatial locations, and all used the same tactics. In contrast to expected deficienci

Working memory in learning disability subgroups.

The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) the degree to which working memory differences between learning-disabled and nondisabled children reflect a specific or generalized deficit, and (b) whether limitations in the enhancement of learning-disabled student's working memory performance are attributable to process or storage functions. To this end, performances of reading-disabled, math-disabled, chronological age (CA)-matched, and achievement-matched children were compared on verbal and visual-spatial working memory measures under initial, gain, and maintenance conditions. The results

Infants' responsiveness to the auditory and visual attributes of a sounding/moving stimulus.

Responses to unimodal and multimodal attributes of a compound auditory/visual stimulus were investigated in 4-, 6-, 8-, and 10-month-old infants. First, infants were habituated to a compound stimulus consisting of a visual stimulus that moved up and down on a video monitor and a sound that occurred each time the visual stimulus reversed direction at the bottom. Once each infant met a habituation criterion, a series of test trials was administered to assess responsiveness to the components of the compound stimulus. Response was defined as the total duration of visual fixation in each trial. In

Are specific reading and writing difficulties causally connected with developmental spatial inability? Evidence from two cases of developmental agnosia and apraxia.

Two cases studies of subjects suffering from severe developmental constructional apraxia are presented. These two subjects demonstrated normal to high ability in reading, writing and arithmetical tests. The analysis of cognitive tests performed by them indicates that extreme developmental, perceptual, spatial and motor deficits may be dissociated from the acquisition of efficient reading ability.

Retinal mechanisms in the perception of subjective contours: the contribution of lateral inhibition.

One mechanism frequently proposed for the creation of subjective contours and their related brightness effects involves lateral neural interactions on the retina, such as the lateral inhibitory effects that underlie brightness contrast. Subjective contour stimuli were displayed under an intermittent light source, with rapid onset and slow offset as has been shown to increase lateral inhibitory interactions by allowing summation of neural onset transients. A sample of forty subjects, using magnitude estimates, reported increased subjective contour clarity and brightness effects under these expo

Recognition of unfamiliar faces in prosopagnosia.

Prosopagnosia is clinically defined as a specific and extreme inability to recognize familiar faces. However, doubts have been expressed concerning prosopagnosics' preserved ability to recognize unfamiliar faces and to make other within category discriminations. The present study pursues these doubts. If recognition of unfamiliar faces and objects is intact, then prosopagnosics should demonstrate normal processing for all tasks that depend on the possession of intact stored visual descriptions at the category level. In particular, they should show normal face and object superiority effects. A

A review of the clinical applications of the pattern electroretinogram.

The pattern electroretinogram (PERG) has recently been introduced as a clinical procedure. It has been thought by many to represent activity of the retinal ganglion cells, although this is still a matter of contention. The exciting prospect of a selective test of ganglion cell function led to the application of the PERG in a variety of ophthalmological conditions. In the course of these investigations the PERG was found to be diminished in cases of maculopathy, optic atrophy, optic neuritis, toxic optic neuropathy, neurotransmitter disorders, glaucoma and ocular hypertension and in retinal vas

Verbal and non-verbal recall by depressed and euthymic affective patients.

This study uses matched-tasks methodology in order to test memory function in depressed and euthymic patients with major affective disorder. Neither drug-free depressed patients nor lithium-treated euthymic patients show a differential deficit in verbal versus non-verbal recall. However, while euthymic patients show no memory impairment, drug-free depressives do show poor memory functioning. The results support the view that memory deficits observed in affective patients in the depressed state are transient, secondary manifestations of depression and are neither indicative of underlying organi

Functional specialization and convergence in the occipito-temporal cortex supporting haptic and visual identification of human faces and body parts: an fMRI study.

Humans can recognize common objects by touch extremely well whenever vision is unavailable. Despite its importance to a thorough understanding of human object recognition, the neuroscientific study of this topic has been relatively neglected. To date, the few published studies have addressed the haptic recognition of nonbiological objects. We now focus on haptic recognition of the human body, a particularly salient object category for touch. Neuroimaging studies demonstrate that regions of the occipito-temporal cortex are specialized for visual perception of faces (fusiform face area, FFA) and

Subtle disturbances of vision after optic neuritis elicited by studying contrast sensitivity.

Eight patients with a subjective disorder of vision yet normal Snellen acuities after optic neuritis were shown to have an abnormal contrast sensitivity function in their affected eye. It appears that certain disorders of vision are associated with an abnormality of the contrast sensitivity function in spite of near normal visual acuity. Such an abnormality may affect pattern recognition without having an influence on Snellen acuity because of the high contrast of the latter and its predominant association with the higher spatial frequencies. Contrast sensitivity function is thus the only tool

The primate temporal pole: its putative role in object recognition and memory.

In this article, we consider both the ventral temporopolar cortex and the perirhinal cortex (areas 35 and 36) as the anterior ventromedial temporal (aVMT) cortex, and discuss its role based on recent data in monkeys and human subjects. In monkeys, the aVMT cortex receives its primary input from area TE, and only minor input from other cortical areas. Laminar patterns of connections suggest that the aVMT cortex is a hierarchically higher-order area than area TE. Lesions of this cortex produce deficits in the learning and performance of visual memory tasks. Neurons in the aVMT cortex respond sel

EEG-based classification models reveal differential neural processing of words and images.

BACKGROUND: Machine learning methods employing neuroimaging data are useful for monitoring the activation of neural representations. Specifically, they can be used to discern the brain networks engaged in processing specific categories of items. This approach has been employed on neuroimaging data, including functional magnetic resonance imaging data and electroencephalography (EEG) data. NEW METHOD: Here, we present a task and an analytical pipeline for investigating category representations using EEG. Participants (N = 30) viewed a series of images and words of objects belonging to five cat

Temporal order-dependent and -independent cortical representation of gaze sequences.

Brain activation patterns in the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) correspond not only to faces or scenes but also to the eye gaze sequences made while viewing these stimuli. But does the VOTC represent category-specific fixation sequences or rather category-specific spatial fixation patterns? To investigate this, we acquired eye movement and functional magnetic resonance imaging data from participants while they tracked dot sequences corresponding to fixations recorded during face or house viewing in the absence of the images themselves. To test for gaze sequences representation, the pre

Functional Activation following Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Neurotypical Adult Readers.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is considered a promising technique to noninvasively modulate cortical excitability and enhance cognitive functions. Despite the growing interest in using TMS to facilitate reading performance in learning disabilities, the immediate TMS-induced effects on brain activity during reading and language tasks in adults with typically developed reading skills remain to be further investigated. In the current study, we explored how a single offline session of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) delivered to core left-hemisphere nodes of the d

Neural responses to camouflage targets with different exposure signs based on EEG.

This study investigates the relationship between various target exposure signs and brain activation patterns by analyzing the EEG signals of 35 subjects observing four types of targets: well-camouflaged, with large color differences, with shadows, and of large size. Through ERP analysis and source localization, we have established that different exposure signs elicit distinct brain activation patterns. The ERP analysis revealed a strong correlation between the latency of the P300 component and the visibility of the exposure signs. Furthermore, our source localization findings indicate that exp

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students' Configurational and Phonological Processing in Chinese One- and Two-Character Word Recognition.

To examine deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students' configurational and phonological processing in Chinese one- and two-character word recognition, two experiments were conducted in a primed semantic categorization task. Configurational priming was observed in DHH participants' reaction times (RTs) at the SOA (stimulus onset asynchrony) of 47 ms and in their probability of making erroneous responses at SOAs of 47 and 187 ms in Experiment 1. Phonological priming was revealed in hearing and DHH participants' probability of making erroneous responses in Experiment 2. Hearing participants' RTs ind
