Radioprotective effect of moderate wine consumption in patients with breast carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Given the high cost and side effects of radioprotective agents such as amifostine, attention has been focused on potentially equally effective but less expensive and toxic natural substances. We evaluated the potential radioprotective effects of wine in preventing skin toxicity in patients with breast cancer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Before treatment, the medical history and habits of patients were assessed and the information recorded in their clinical folders. Patients were divided into three groups based on the dose/fractionation scheme used: control group, 60.4 Gy (standard techniq

Direct and indirect measurement of patient radiation exposure during endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.

With the increasing complexity of endovascular procedures, concern has grown regarding patient radiation exposure. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair represents the most common complex endovascular procedure currently performed by vascular specialists. Our study evaluates the patient radiation dose received during endovascular AAA repair. Over a 3-month period we prospectively monitored the radiation dose in a series of consecutive patients undergoing endovascular AAA repair. All patients underwent standard endovascular AAA repair with one of two commercially available grafts using the GE

Ionizing radiation in endovascular interventions.

Ionizing radiation exposure is an inherent component of endovascular surgery. As procedures become more complex, greater radiation exposure is incurred by both staff and patient. Radiation doses during endovascular aneurysm repair are similar to those recorded during percutaneous coronary interventions. Ionizing radiation may cause skin injury, as well as increase the long-term risk of malignancy. Endovascular surgeons need to be aware of radiation hazards and take all reasonable steps to minimize the risks to both patients and staff.

Comparison of acute skin reaction following morning versus late afternoon radiotherapy in patients with breast cancer who have undergone curative surgical resection.

We investigated the relationship between the time of radiotherapy (RT) and treatment outcomes in breast cancer. Patients with pathologic T1-2N0-1 breast cancer who received adjuvant RT in the morning (before 10:00 AM) or late afternoon (after 3:00 PM) were eligible for inclusion in this study. We retrospectively compared the clinicopathologic characteristics, acute skin reaction, and survival outcomes according to the time of RT. The median follow-up duration was 83 months (range, 10-131 months). From the 395 eligible patients, 190 (48.1%) and 205 (51.9%) patients were classified into the morn

[Surgical treatment of groin soft tissue defects].

BACKGROUND: Treatment of groin defects remains challenging due to their location and origin. Such defects commonly result from resection of tumours but can also occur after surgical or medical therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 2003 to 2005, 11 patients were treated with groin defects following radiation therapy and resection of lymph node metastasis, primary carcinoma, and sarcoma. Seven patients received wound closure with rectus femoris muscle flaps, and three had vertical rectus abdominis muscle flaps. One patient was amputated at the hip, and the defect was covered with dorsally pedicle

[External beam irradiation of head and neck cancer].

Ionising rays are employed in percutaneous radiation of head and neck tumours. Radiation reduces cell division in the target tissue. The individual parameters of the radiation procedure are determined within the framework of the interdisciplinarily conceived treatment. Tumour control probability depends on tumour-specific factors and on the dosage as well as on the treatment period. The macroscopic and microscopic extend of the tumour area determines the target volume and dosage of the radiation. Conformal radiation is the standard procedure in primary radiation treatment. The anticipated side

[Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with S-1 and cisplatin (CDDP) in patients (pts) with locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC)].

The standard care for unresectable locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC) is concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Although there is no standard regimen of CRT, a platinum-based regimen has shown a better survival benefit than other regimens. The control arm in a randomized trial for unresectable locally advanced HNC is radiotherapy concurrent with CDDP (100 mg/m2, every 3 weeks), which has been considered to be too toxic for clinical practice in Western countries and has required frequent dose modifications. Because the Japanese also have been considered unable to tolerate this regimen, no

Cytogenetic damage in lymphocytes for the purpose of dose reconstruction: a review of three recent radiation accidents.

The analysis of chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood of radiation accident victims is an established method of biological dosimetry. The dose estimate on the basis of an in vitro calibration curve is straightforward when the radiation exposure is homogeneous and the analysis not delayed. In recent years three radiation accidents occurred, where the irradiation or sampling conditions precluded a simple estimation of the dose. During the Georgian accident soldiers carried in their pockets small sources of 137Cs leading to partial and protracted body exposures. During the Tokai-mura accide

Avoidance of radiation injuries from medical interventional procedures.

Interventional radiology (fluoroscopically-guided) techniques are being used by an increasing number of clinicians not adequately trained in radiation safety or radiobiology. Many of these interventionists are not aware of the potential for injury from these procedures or the simple methods for decreasing their incidence. Many patients are not being counselled on the radiation risks, nor followed up when radiation doses from difficult procedures may lead to injury. Some patients are suffering radiation-induced skin injuries and younger patients may face an increased risk of future cancer. Inte

External Volume Expansion in Irradiated Tissue: Effects on the Recipient Site.

BACKGROUND: External volume expansion prepares recipient sites to improve outcomes of fat grafting. For patients receiving radiotherapy after mastectomy, results with external volume expansion vary, and the relationship between radiotherapy and expansion remains unexplored. Thus, the authors developed a new translational model to investigate the effects in chronic skin fibrosis after radiation exposure. METHODS: Twenty-four SKH1-E mice received 50 Gy of β-radiation to each flank and were monitored until fibrosis developed (8 weeks). External volume expansion was then applied at -25 mmHg to on
