Soft climbing robots have attracted much attention of researchers for their potential applications on the wall or inside the tube. However, making a soft robot climb on the outer surface of a rod or tube by agile and efficient motion has long been a challenge. Inspired by the winding climbing locomotion of arboreal snakes, a tethered pneumatic-actuated winding-styled soft rod-climbing robot that consists of two winding actuators and a telescopic actuator is proposed in this work. Based on constant curvature assumption, we develop a theoretical model to analyze the linear and bending motion of

The morphosis from open surgeries to minimally invasive procedures is in greater part owing to the development of robotics. There has been a hiking popularity of robotic assistance for surgeries in recent years. Though a minimally invasive approach for surgery, it poses major challenges for an anesthesiologist that compound further for pediatric patients. The need of the hour for an anesthesiologist is to have a scrupulous knowledge and understanding of the associated anatomical and physiological considerations in case of pediatric patients. Major anesthetic concerns include restricted patient…

Minimally invasive pancreatic surgery is eventually gaining momentum, but concerns remain regarding the ability to manage challenging operative scenarios. A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database was performed to identify patients who received arterial resection, or required arterial repair, during robot-assisted pancreatic resection (RA-PR). All procedures were video recorded. Between October 2008 and June 2019, a total of 361 RA-PR were performed. Associated vascular procedures were required in 31 patients (8.5%), including resection or repair of arterial segments in fiv

A 20-year-old man complained of debilitating left flank pain for 6 months with an episode of gross hematuria. Computed tomography showed compression of the left renal vein between the aorta and superior mesenteric artery with an aortomesenteric angle of 25 degrees. Venography showed a gradient of 3 mm Hg across the compression and 94.4% luminal compression of the left renal vein. After discussion of all surgical and endovascular options, robot-assisted laparoscopic placement of an extravascular cuff around the left renal vein was performed using the da Vinci X Surgical System (Intuitive Surgic

INTRODUCTION: Video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (VEIL) improves on open inguinal node dissection because it offers decreased morbidity. In conventional VEIL, port placement is along the long axis of the femur, above the knee joint. In the laparoscopic approach, this placement is fraught with problems because the camera hits the knee, the surgeon must reach over the camera, and sword fighting occurs between the instruments. In the robotic approach, external collisions are likewise not uncommon because of a lack of optimal spacing between the robot's arms. Here, we describe our lateral a

We report a 39-year-old male with accidental findings of posterior mediastinum mass at right superior aspects, located at T2 with close proximity to trachea, superior vena cava, azygus vein, right subclavian artery and oesophagus. Apart from intermittent right shoulder pain, there was no other significant symptom. He opted for conservative management initially, given the benign nature and proximity to important structures. We postulated that robotic approach will be of advantage for this particular case which was successfully performed with uneventful recovery. This case illustrated the advant

OBJECTIVE: A laryngocele is a space that develops as a result of pathological dilatation of the laryngeal saccule. However, the reported management of laryngoceles varies. We conducted a systematic review of the literature regarding the surgical management of laryngoceles and pyolaryngoceles, to understand the evolving nature of treatment for this rare condition.
METHODS: We searched for publications in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, JBI Library of Systematic Reviews, and Ovid databases using the terms "laryngocele", "pyolaryngocele", and "laryngopyocele", and reviewed the identified articles.

Femoroplasty is a proposed alternative therapeutic method for preventing osteoporotic hip fractures in the elderly. Previously developed navigation system for femoroplasty required the attachment of an external X-ray fiducial to the femur. We propose a fiducial-free 2D/3D registration pipeline using fluoroscopic images for robot-assisted femoroplasty. Intraoperative fluoroscopic images are taken from multiple views to perform registration of the femur and drilling/injection device. The proposed method was tested through comprehensive simulation and cadaveric studies. Performance was evaluated

BACKGROUND: Biped robot locomotion is an active topic of research, and the walking stability is one of the research objectives.
OBJECTIVE: This paper discusses the variable stiffness ankle joint and the walking control of a biped robot.
METHODS: A design is introduced that achieves the ankle joint variable stiffness by using a pneumatic unit. The actuation system of the biped robot is based on the hybrid use of electric and pneumatic. The locomotion control architecture has been proposed to exploit natural leg dynamics in order to improve the biped robot walking stability. We also present a

INTRODUCTION: Available robot-assisted stroke rehabilitation systems are often limited in their utilization in the home environment, due to several barriers such as high cost, absence of therapists, tedious training tasks, or encumbering interfaces. This paper presents a low-cost robotic rehabilitation and assessment device for restoring wrist function, offering wrist exercises incorporating pronation-supination and flexion-extension movements. Furthermore, the device is designed for the assessment of joint stiffness of the wrist, and range of motion in two degrees of freedom. Methods: Mechani

To analyze the rigid-flexible coupling effects on the dynamic performance of a robot system, a dynamic model of a parallel robot with flexible spatial links is derived in detail using a floating frame of reference (FFR) formulation. Compared to the previous rigid-flexible coupling model where the kinematic chains are all flexible links or where the joints are all flexible components, the inertia matrix and the stiffness matrix are not constant matrix which leading to the differences in respect of dynamic performance in model. To verify the correctness of the derived dynamics equations, the dyn

We propose a novel wearable robotic glove or exo-glove design scalable to the variation of the hand kinematics. While most of the traditional robot hand is driven by rotating the joint directly with a rigid body, our exo-glove deforms a robotic finger's skin and, thus, the hand skeleton joints. Multiple tendons woven on the exo-glove's surface can make multi-DOF finger joint motions. We allocated tendons to mimic a hand's intrinsic and extrinsic muscles. Thus, a robotic hand actuated with the exo-glove can perform natural finger motions, including abduction/adduction and flexion/extension of f

UNLABELLED: Preoperative planning software and a robotic device facilitate the placement of pedicle screws, especially in patients with difficult anatomy, thereby increasing the feasibility, accuracy, and efficiency of the procedure. The robot functions as a semiactive surgical assistive device whose goal is not to substitute but to offer the surgeon a set of versatile tools that can broaden his or her ability to treat patients1.
DESCRIPTION: The robotic guidance system consists of a bed-mounted surgical arm and a workstation. We used the Mazor X Stealth Edition Robotic Guidance System by Med

Five years ago, robot-assisted transaxillary thyroidectomy (RATT) was introduced in the Netherlands. The major advantage of this technique, when compared to the conventional approach, is the prevention of a potentially disfiguring scar in the neck. In recent years, multiple large cohort studies have demonstrated that the quality of the resection, postoperative complications and functional and oncological outcomes are similar in patients treated with RATT when compared to the open procedure. However, no randomised controlled trials have been performed to confirm these findings. The Utrecht UMC

This paper systematically reviewed and analyzed the recent publications of robotic-assisted surgeries in the field of tissue repair and reconstruction. Surgical robots can elevate skin flap more accurately and shorten the time of tissue harvest. In addition, robotic-assisted surgery has the advantage of minimal tissue trauma and thus forms minimal scar. The utilization of surgical robots reduces the occurrence of complications after oral radical tumor resection while achieving cosmetic sutures. Robotic-assisted radical mastectomy could radically remove invasive breast cancer lesions and achiev
