BACKGROUND: Nicotine has been shown to release nitric oxide from nerves in human sigmoid colon. This effect has been used to investigate the innervation and functional relationship of the longitudinal and circular muscle layers.

We report a patient with obstructing cancer of the sigmoid colon initially treated with a self-expanding metallic stent. The metallic stent successfully relieved the intestinal obstruction, and laparoscopic anterior resection was performed subsequently. The use of this approach in the management of patients with obstructing colorectal cancer is discussed.

During the last 6 years 24 sigmoid colon neobladders were constructed at our institute according to a surgical technique that provides for an optimal spherical configuration of the orthotopic reservoir. All patients underwent radical cystectomy for locally advanced or superficial recurrent bladder cancer. The surgical complication rate was minimal. Mean followup was 38.3 months (range 7 to 70). A retrospective analysis of data from 69 patients treated by Hartmann's operation between 1981 and 1991 determined prognostic factors for colon continuity re-establishment and the mortality of this second intervention. Three patients with colorectal cancer after irradiation for cervical cancer are described. One patient had two colorectal cancers. Three of the four cancers in these patients were located in the rectum and one in the sigmoid colon; all were within the irradiation field.
