Temporal bones of six infants with congenital ear anomalies were examined for abnormalities of the oval window and facial nerve. These temporal bones were classified into two groups according to the degree of malformation: group A, those with atresia or absence of the oval window; and, group B, those with hypoplasia of the stapes and annular ligament. Group A, consisting of five ears, were associated with severe middle ear anomalies such as the abnormal course of the facial nerve and absence of the stapes. In group B, consisting of seven ears, the stapes were present and the facial nerve prese

Motion sickness can occur when an accelerating force acting on the human body repeatedly changes amplitude and direction or both. It also can occur without any motion after transfer into a constant force field significantly different from Earth-gravity. Dynamic and static causes of motion sickness can be distinguished accordingly. Space sickness, too, has dynamic as well as static aspects. Dynamic space sickness might depend on increased bilateral differential sensitivity of the peripheral and central vestibular apparatus, whereas static space sickness may be caused by erroneous compensation o

During the period from January 1973 to June 1975, 60 cases with definite Meniere's disease and 30 cases with sudden deafness were listed according to such criteria for the diagnosis of both diseases as determined by the Research Committee of Japan. A neurootological assessment for both diseases were performed in our series. In patients with definite Meniere's disease, hearing impairment was characterized by deficiency in detecting low- and middle-pitched tones and fluctuation of auditory threshold in low frequency range. In sudden deafness, highly impaired hearing loss, i.e., total deafness, w

BACKGROUND: Pneumolabyrinth is a rare inner ear clinical manifestation. To date, only about 50 cases have been reported—all as case reports. Consequently, the rate and clinical characteristics of pneumolabyrinth have not been evaluated.
METHODS: Of the 38, 568 patients who visited our emergency department for head trauma, 466 underwent temporal bone computed tomography (CT). One hundred seventy-five patients had temporal bone fracture (13 bilateral temporal bone fractures; 188 ears with temporal bone fractures), and 14 patients had pneumolabyrinth (15 ears with pneumolabyrinth; 1 bilateral ca

Aminoglycoside antibiotics are frequently employed in the treatment of serious infections caused by aerobic gram negative bacilli. The use of these potent antibacterial agents is limited by the risks of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Aminoglycosides are excreted by glomerular filtration at a rate proportional to the serum concentration. Impaired renal excretion reduces the rate of clearance from the serum. Utilizing information about aminoglycoside pharmacokinetics, the susceptibility of infecting pathogens to aminoglycosides, and risk factors for ototoxicity, physicians can attempt to optimi

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study is to assess the vestibular function of patients with an untreated unilateral vestibular schwannoma (VS) using multiple objective tests, and to correlate outcomes with vestibular complaints and QoL. The secondary aim is to evaluate patient and tumor characteristics that may affect objective and subjective vestibular function.
METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, patients with untreated unilateral VS aged 18 years or older were included and evaluated using the caloric test, vHIT, cVEMP, DHI, PANQOL, and SF-36. Tumor and patient character

Self-motion signals, distributed ubiquitously across parietal-temporal lobes, propagate to limbic hippocampal system for vector-based navigation via hubs including posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and retrosplenial cortex (RSC). Although numerous studies have indicated posterior cingulate areas are involved in spatial tasks, it is unclear how their neurons represent self-motion signals. Providing translation and rotation stimuli to macaques on a 6-degree-of-freedom motion platform, we discovered robust vestibular responses in PCC. A combined three-dimensional spatiotemporal model captured data

Perceptual decision-making is increasingly being understood to involve an interaction between bottom-up sensory-driven signals and top-down choice-driven signals, but how these signals interact to mediate perception is not well understood. The parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) is an area with prominent vestibular responsiveness, and previous work has shown that inactivating PIVC impairs vestibular heading judgments. To investigate the nature of PIVC's contribution to heading perception, we recorded extracellularly from PIVC neurons in two male rhesus macaques during a heading discrimina

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of isotretinoin (ISO) on peripheral vestibular system using vHIT.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This is a prospective study in which 30 patients administered ISO treatment with the diagnosis of acne vulgaris was evaluated. Following ear nose and throat, examination, audiological and vestibular evaluations were carried out. vHIT tests were conducted before and three months after the use of ISO (0.5-0.75 mg/kg/day). In addition, all participants underwent perceptual vertigo and dizziness tests before and three months after the use of ISO.

Disabling hearing loss impacts ∼466 million individuals worldwide with 34 million children affected. Gene and pharmacotherapeutic strategies to rescue auditory function in mouse models of human deafness are most effective when administered before hearing onset, after which therapeutic efficacy is significantly diminished or lost. We hypothesize that preemptive correction of a mutation in the fetal inner ear prior to maturation of the sensory epithelium will optimally restore sensory function. We previously demonstrated that transuterine microinjection of a splice-switching antisense oligonucle

Clinically feasible metrics, that can inform the concussion recovery decision making process by evaluating a unique domain beyond current testing domains (e.g., balance, neurocognition, symptoms, vestibular/ocular function) are still in need. The purpose of this study was to compare perceptual-motor control in adolescent athletes ≤21 days of sport-related concussion and healthy controls and evaluate the association of perceptual-motor control to the outcomes of commonly-used sport-related concussion clinical assessments. Athletes (age: 12-18 years) with sport-related concussion (n = 48) and he

Purpose Motion sickness (MS) is a common condition that affects millions of individuals. Although the condition is common and can be debilitating, little research has focused on the vestibular function associated with susceptibility to MS. One causal theory of MS is an asymmetry of vestibular function within or between ears. The purposes of this study, therefore, were (a) to determine if the vestibular system (oculomotor and caloric tests) in videonystagmography (VNG) is associated with susceptibility to MS and (b) to determine if these tests support the theory of an asymmetry between ears ass

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Characterize the state of vestibular compensation of subjects diagnosed with acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUV) of peripheral origin according to the temporal organization pattern of the refixation saccades (Perez and Rey (PR) score).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional study using previously collected clinical data from a tertiary referral center.
METHODS: Following the vestibular compensation criteria defined by Eisenman, we used the video head impulse test as the main vestibular function test and compared the results with other traditional tests: rotatory
