Down-regulation of GluK2 kainate receptor expression by chronic treatment with mood-stabilizing anti-convulsants or lithium in cultured astrocytes and brain, but not in neurons.

Recent studies have indicated that glutamatergic transmission may be altered in bipolar disorder and affected by chronic treatment with mood-stabilizing drugs. Kainate receptors may be of special interest because i) they have a modulatory role in synaptic transmission, long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LDP); and ii) involvement of the kainate receptor subunit GluK2 (GluR6) in behavioral symptoms thought characteristic of mania has been demonstrated in knock-out mice. Glutamate receptors are expressed not only on neurons, but also on astrocytes, where they contribute to reg

Comparative effectiveness of neuroendoscopic surgery and stereotactic aspiration for brain hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH) involving the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem is a critical condition with high mortality. While minimally invasive surgical techniques are widely utilized, the comparative effectiveness of neuroendoscopic surgery (NS) vs. stereotactic aspiration (SA) across different anatomical locations remains underexplored. This study aims to retrospectively compare the effectiveness and safety of NS and SA in a cohort encompassing different IPH locations. METHODS: A single-center retrospective analysis was conducted on 199 patients with IPH (NS: n = 97; S…

Measuring Brain Stiffness in Normal Adults According to Age and Sex Using Virtual MR Elastography: A Preliminary Study.

PURPOSE: Assessing brain stiffness alterations associated with normal aging, sex-related differences, and regional variations is important f … the DWI-based virtual shear modulus (μdiff). Brain stiffness was measured in 12 brain regions: the cerebrum, cerebral gray/white matter, basal ganglia, thalamus, frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, cerebellum, hippocampus, and amygdala. Linear regression and multiple-comparison tests were performed to evaluate the effects of age an …

Cerebral blood flow alterations in non-auditory tinnitus: implications for cerebral venous congestion pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous congestion (CVC), including internal jugular vein stenosis (IJVS) and cerebral venous sinus stenosis (CVSS), can … n. RESULTS: Patients in the NAT+ group exhibited significant CBF reductions in the left hemisphere, cerebrum, and specific regions, including the insula, paracentral lobule, and precentral gyrus, compared to those in the NAT- and HC groups. Reduced CBF in NAT+ patients was correlated with longer tinnitus duration, poorer sleep quality, and worse depression …

Altered neuroimaging patterns of cerebellum and cognition underlying the gait and balance dysfunction in cerebral small vessel disease.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of gait and balance dysfunction (GBD) in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains unclear. Evidence supports c … ltered functional activity in sensorimotor area and ventral attention network in the cerebellum and cerebrum may underlying the GBD in CSVD. Memory might be critically cognitively responsible for GBD in CSVD.

Identification of methylation-regulated genes modulating microglial phagocytosis in hyperhomocysteinemia-exacerbated Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) has been linked to development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathologically characterized by the accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ). Microglia (MG) play a crucial role in uptake of Aβ fibrils, and its dysfunction worsens AD. However, the effect of HHcy on MG Aβ phagocytosis remains unstudied. METHODS: We isolated MG from the cerebrum of HHcy mice with genetic cystathionine-β-synthase deficiency (Cbs-/-) and performed bulk RNA-seq. We performed meta-analysis over transcriptomes of Cbs-/- mouse MG, human and mouse AD MG, MG Aβ phagocytosis model, human AD …

OBJECTIVE: Utilizing the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) technique, this study sought to correlate spontaneous ce … 51, P = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: Aberrant spontaneous activity was observed in multiple regions of the cerebrum, offering helpful information about the pathology of MGD in SO population. Aberrant fALFF values in these regions likely relates to the latent pathologic mechanisms of anomalous cerebral activities in PATs.

In addition, Cenpj depletion causes long and thin primary cilia and motile cilia in adult neural stem cells and reduced cell proliferation in the subventricular zone. Expression of Oligodendrocyte Precursor Cell Markers in Canine Oligodendrogliomas.

Oligodendroglioma is a common brain tumor in dogs, particularly brachycephalic breeds. Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) are suspected to be a possible origin of oligodendroglioma, although it has not been well elucidated. In the present study, 27 cases of canine brain oligodendrogliomas were histologically and immunohistochemically examined. The most commonly affected breed was the French Bulldog ( n = 19 of 27, 70%). Seizure was the most predominant clinical sign ( n = 17 of 25, 68%). The tumors were located mainly in the cerebrum, particularly in the frontal lobe ( n = 10 of 27, 37%). …
