Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, which traps significantly more heat than carbon dioxide over short timescales, but remains underrepresented in models used for projecting future climate scenarios, particularly in permafrost landscapes. Understanding methane dynamics in northern wetlands is critical for improving projections of high-latitude carbon feedbacks to the global climate system. To address this, we integrated ecological processes driving methane production, oxidation, and transport pathways into the DVM-DOS-TEM terrestrial biosphere model. Using long-term site observations from a th

Demographic processes that ensure the recovery and resilience of marine populations are critical as climate change sends an increasing proportion on a trajectory of decline. Yet for some populations, recovery potential remains high. We conducted annual monitoring over 9 years (2012-2020) to assess the recovery of coral populations belonging to the genus Pocillopora. These populations experienced a catastrophic collapse following a severe typhoon in 2009. From the start of the monitoring period, high initial recruitment led to the establishment of a juvenile population that rapidly transitioned

Studies of the geographic distribution of sand flies and the factors associated with their occurrence are necessary to understand the risk of leishmaniasis transmission. The objective of this study was to characterize the sand fly fauna, particularly the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva), and correlate these with climate factors in the Dourados municipality, Brazil. The collection of sand flies was carried out with CDC Light Traps over two periods: at six sites for three consecutive nights each month from August 2012 to July 2013; and at four other sites for two cons

Chikungunya virus disease (chikungunya) is a mosquito-borne infectious disease reported in at least 50 countries, mostly in the tropics. It has spread around the globe within the last two decades, with local outbreaks in Europe. The vector mosquito Aedes albopictus (Diptera, Culicidae) has already widely established itself in southern Europe and is spreading towards central parts of the continent. Public health authorities and policymakers need to be informed about where and when a chikungunya transmission is likely to take place. Here, we adapted a previously published global ecological niche

BACKGROUND: Since 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has moved rapidly across the United States, resulting in tens of thousands of human cases. Both the number of human cases and the minimum infection rate (MIR) in vector mosquitoes vary across time and space and are driven by numerous abiotic and biotic forces, ranging from differences in microclimates to socio-demographic factors. Because the interactions among these multiple factors affect the locally variable risk of WNV illness, it has been especially difficult to model human disease risk across varying spatial and temporal scales. Lyme disease, recognized as one of the most important vector-borne diseases worldwide, has been increasing in incidence and spatial extend in United States. In the Northeast and Upper Midwest, Lyme disease is transmitted by Ixodes scapularis. Currently, many studies have been conducted to identify factors influencing Lyme disease risk in the Northeast, however, relatively few studies focused on the Upper Midwest. In this study, we explored and compared the climatic and landscape factors that shape the spatial patterns of human Lyme cases in these two regions, using the generalized linear mixed

Vitamin B1 is an essential exogenous micronutrient for animals. Mass death and reproductive failure in top aquatic consumers caused by vitamin B1 deficiency is an emerging conservation issue in Northern hemisphere aquatic ecosystems. We present for the first time a model that identifies conditions responsible for the constrained flow of vitamin B1 from unicellular organisms to planktivorous fishes. The flow of vitamin B1 through the food web is constrained under anthropogenic pressures of increased nutrient input and, driven by climatic change, increased light attenuation by dissolved substanc

The convergent evolution of the human pygmy phenotype in tropical rainforests is widely assumed to reflect adaptation in response to the distinct ecological challenges of this habitat (e.g. high levels of heat and humidity, high pathogen load, low food availability, and dense forest structure), yet few precise adaptive benefits of this phenotype have been proposed. Here, we describe and test a biomechanical model of how the rainforest environment can alter gait kinematics such that short stature is advantageous in dense habitats. We hypothesized that environmental constraints on step length in

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and Zika kill more than 700,000 people each year in the world. A novel strategy to control these diseases employs the bacterium Wolbachia whose infection in mosquitoes blocks virus replication. The prerequisite for this measure is to release Wolbachia -infected mosquitoes to replace wild population. Due to the fluctuation of environmental conditions for mosquito growth, we develop and analyze a model of differential equations with parameters randomly changing over multiple environmental regimes. By comparing the dynamics between the stochastic syste

This study compared results obtained with five different fecal egg count reduction (FECR) calculation methods for defining resistance to ivermectin, fenbendazole, and levamisole in gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in a temperate continental climate: FECR1 and FECR2 used pre- and posttreatment fecal egg count (FEC) means from both treated and control animals, but FECR1 used arithmetic means, whereas FECR2 used geometric means; FECR3 used arithmetic means for pre- and posttreatment FECs from treated animals only; FECR4 was calculated using only arithmetic means for posttreatment FECs from tre

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth infections affect tens of millions of individuals in the People's Republic of China (P.R. China). There is a need for high-resolution estimates of at-risk areas and number of people infected to enhance spatial targeting of control interventions. However, such information is not yet available for P.R. China.
METHODS: A geo-referenced database compiling surveys pertaining to soil-transmitted helminthiasis, carried out from 2000 onwards in P.R. China, was established. Bayesian geostatistical models relating the observed survey data with potential climatic, e

In this study, the key climatic factors in spawning, overwintering, and hatching periods of grasshopper were taken as the main factors to establish the climatic suitability index of potential occurrence of grasshopper (POG) in Inner Mongolia, and an evaluation was conducted on the climatic suitability of POG in Xianghuangqi County of Inner Mongolia in 2010. Based on the field investigation data collected in early and mid July 2010, seven relatively stable habitat factors including elevation, aspect, soil type, soil sand content, vegetation type, vegetation coverage, and land cover type were se

In Italian nurseries and young groves of evergreen cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.), the eriophyoid mite Trisetacus juniperinus (Nal.) is considered a very serious pest. A rating system of damage symptoms was developed to investigate the susceptibility of different cypress seedling families to the mite. Based on this system, the seedlings were evaluated for three years in the nursery and in two field locations after transplanting. Data obtained in the nursery allowed the cypress families to be allocated to at least two different levels of susceptibility. These levels of susceptibility were

There is conflicting evidence concerning seasonal variability of patch test results and no evidence concerning the influence of season on weak-positive, possibly false-positive, irritant reactions, which was analysed in the present study. Data collected in the German Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) 1992 to 1997 were combined with external environmental data on temperature and absolute humidity in Germany, and bivariate as well as logistic regression analyses performed concerning the association between reactivity to selected allergens and air temperature and absolute h

The risk and intensity of mosquito-borne disease outbreaks are tightly linked to the frequency at which mosquitoes feed on blood, also known as the biting rate. However, standard models of mosquito-borne disease transmission inherently assume that mosquitoes bite only once per reproductive cycle-an assumption commonly violated in nature. Drivers of multiple biting, such as host defensive behaviors or climate factors, also affect the mosquito gonotrophic cycle duration (GCD), a quantity customarily used to estimate the biting rate. Here, we present a novel framework for incorporating more compl

Efficient and accurate dengue risk prediction is an important basis for dengue prevention and control, which faces challenges, such as downloading and processing multi-source data to generate risk predictors and consuming significant time and computational resources to train and validate models locally. In this context, this study proposed a framework for dengue risk prediction by integrating big geospatial data cloud computing based on Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and artificial intelligence modeling on the Google Colab platform. It enables defining the epidemiological calendar, delinea

Accurate infectious disease forecasting can inform efforts to prevent outbreaks and mitigate adverse impacts. This study compares the performance of statistical, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) approaches in forecasting infectious disease incidences across different countries and time intervals. We forecasted three diverse diseases: campylobacteriosis, typhoid, and Q-fever, using a wide variety of features (n = 46) from public datasets, e.g., landscape, climate, and socioeconomic factors. We compared autoregressive statistical models to two tree-based ML models (extreme gradient

A suite of ecological hypotheses has been proposed to explain why more species are found in the tropics. Most of these hypotheses consider the geography of climate as a major determinant of richness, while ignoring the relationships between organisms and climate, in other words, their climatic niche. In this study, we evaluate three hypotheses that link species richness to niche properties. The niche breadth hypothesis predicts higher richness where species have narrower niches; the niche marginality hypothesis predicts higher richness where species have less marginal niches; and the niche pos

Higher education exposes students with disabilities to elevated psychological demands that can impair their health-related functioning and well-being. However, the extent to which interpersonal socio-emotional support and perceived youth social embeddedness operate as protective resources in this population, particularly in China, remains insufficiently understood. This study assessed the direct effects of internalizing symptoms, youth anxiety symptoms, and perceived stress burden on youth health-related functioning and well-being. It further examined whether interpersonal socio-emotional supp

INTRODUCTION: The growing global environmental crisis, such as resource depletion and climate change risks, poses a serious threat to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. As the core strategy to alleviate environmental crisis, pro-environment behaviors (PEBs) can significantly reduce carbon emissions and support sustainable development of the environment. However, the influencing factors and underlying mechanisms of PEBs have not yet been fully elucidated.
METHODS: A total of 620 undergraduate students from Nanjing, Hefei and Wuhan were selected as the research objects. Corre
