For the first time in West Africa, arboviruses were isolated from phlebotomine sand fly pools. One strain of Chandipura virus (a Vesiculovirus), four strains of Saboya virus (a Flavivirus), and one strain of a not yet identified virus were isolated. The methods of indirct haemagglutination (IH) and precipitation in gel (ID) were employed to test the level of varicella-zoster (VZ) antibodies in an experimental batch of zoster gammaglobulin (ZIG). The titre of indirect haemagglutinating antibodies in ZIG was about 64 times higher than in the ordinary batches of normal immunoglobulin and about 8 times higher in comparison with the level of the initial plasma pool. Babesia caballi-infected or normal equine erythrocytes were solubilized in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) buffer and analyzed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and Western blotting. Antigens were allowed to react with sera from horses experimentally or field-infected with B. caballi and with sera from non-infected horses. Major babesial antigens recognized by immune sera had apparent mol. wts of 141, 112, 70, 50, 48, 34, and 30 kDa.
