A patient with intestinal amoebiasis and cutaneous amoebic ulcer.

This paper reports a patient with intestinal amoebiasis in concomitant with amoebic ulcer in the thigh. The ulcer was suspected to be carcinoma, complicated cutaneous leishmaniasis or due to free-living amoebae. The diagnosis was confirmed by the pathological and parasitological demonstration of haematophagous trophozoites of E. histolytica. The patient was successfully treated with Metronidazole.

Diagnostic tests for amoebic liver abscess: comparison of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE).

The liver abscess is the most frequent extraintestinal complication of intestinal amoebiasis: its diagnosis is suggested by the clinical picture but it must be confirmed by paraclinic tests. Themost stringent diagnosis requires identification of E. histolytica. But this is possible only in a few cases. Serological tests greatly improve the diagnosis of this severe complication of amoebiasis. We compared the Enzyme Linfed Immunosorbent Assay and the Counterimmunoelectrophoresis techniques. Both techniques were used to detect amoebic antibodies in 50 control patients, 30 patients with liver absc

[Amebic appendicitis with subsequent perforated pancolitis].

Amoebic appendicitis is very rare, occurring in about 0.5 to 1% of acute appendicitis in tropical countries. The most severe complication is transmural amoebic colitis with perforation, described in 1.6 to 3.2% of cases. The mortality of such cases can be very high (up to 80%). We present a Swiss patient with amoebic appendicitis followed by severe perforated colitis; a total colectomy was necessary and the patient survived. Because of the good results of amoebicidal therapy and because of the severity of the complication after colitis we suggest that patients with signs of acute appendicitis

[Amebic liver abscess: 2 imported cases].

Two imported cases of amebic liver abscess are discussed with regard to laboratory, diagnostic and therapeutic peculiarities. The diagnostic role of ultrasonography and especially of specific serology is stressed, whereas in therapeutic terms, the efficacy of medical approach alone is emphasized even when complications until yesterday surgically treated occur.

[Experimental intestinal amebiasis: invasion and extension of the amebic lesion].

A morphological analysis of an experimental model of invasive intestinal amebiasis was carried out using the washed-closed cecal loop model in hamsters and guinea-pigs. By light microscopy, few amebic trophozoites adhered to the intestinal epithelium, whereas many associated to the mucus blanket. Some trophozoites attached to the interglandular epithelium, during the first 10 to 15 hours of interaction. Hereafter, the parasites destroyed gradually the epithelium and were associated with normal and lysed inflammatory cells. Some amebas have cell debris and erythrocytes in their cytoplasms. Typi

High rates of enteric protozoal infections in selected homosexual men attending a venereal disease clinic.

Stool specimens from 89 high-risk, sexually active homosexual men were screened for enteric protozoal cysts. Patients whose specimens contained nonpathogenic cysts were investigated further by examination of fresh purged specimens. A total of 27 of the initial specimens (30%) contained protozoal cysts. Twenty-three patients (26%) harbored pathogens. There were 18 cases (20%) of amebiasis and 11 cases (12%) of giardiasis. Six men (7%) had concurrent amebiasis and giardiasis. The presence of infections correlated with a history of anilingus but not with place of birth, travel, or history of symp
