[The joint effects of various atmospheric pollutants: a meta-analysis].

Epidemiological and experimental papers on respiratory effects of air pollution published between 1980 and 1988 were reviewed, using a meta-analytical approach. Forty epidemiological papers dealing with sulfur dioxide (SO2) and total suspended particles (TSP) were used to scrutinize the interaction between the two pollutants, and suggested that the effect of the acid gas was enhanced by the joint presence of TSP. Oxidant pollution combining O3 and NO2 was also found more noxious than ozone alone, using 32 experimental design papers. These results stem from the multivariate modelization of the

Biological control of ticks in domestic environments: Modeling the potential impact of entomopathogenic fungi on the transmission of East Coast fever in cattle.

Biological control of ticks using entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is a highly desired alternative to chemical acaricides for the control of tick-borne pathogens. For Metarhizium anisopliae isolate ICIPE 7, one of these EPFs, efficacy against multiple tick species has been demonstrated in laboratory and field settings. However, we currently have little quantitative understanding of how EPFs can impact transmission. We developed a deterministic model of tick-host-pathogen interactions to explore how the effects of EPF on Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks may impact the transmission dynamics of Eas

A Novel Epidemiological Approach to Geographically Mapping Population Dry Eye Disease in the United States Through Google Trends.

PURPOSE: Our study fills the spatiotemporal gaps in dry eye disease (DED) epidemiology by using Google Trends as a novel epidemiological tool for geographically mapping DED in relation to environmental risk factors. METHODS: We used Google Trends to extract DED-related queries estimating users' intent from 2004 to 2019 in the United States. We incorporated national climate data to generate heat maps comparing geographic, temporal, and environmental relationships of DED. Multivariable regression models were constructed to generate quadratic forecasts predicting DED and control searches. RESUL

A preliminary ecological profile of Kyasanur Forest disease virus hosts among the mammalian wildlife of the Western Ghats, India.

Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD) virus is one of India's severe arboviruses capable of causing prolonged debilitating disease. It has been expa … ally based wildlife surveillance and field investigations, while also helping to parameterise novel epidemiological models of zoonotic infection risk that incorporate species functional traits in a region where biogeography, landscape ecology, and community ecology manifest extraordinary complexity, particularly under growing anthropogenic pressure.

Spatial epidemiological approaches to inform leptospirosis surveillance and control: A systematic review and critical appraisal of methods.

Leptospirosis is a global zoonotic disease that the transmission is driven by complex geographical and temporal variation in demographics, animal hosts and socioecological factors. This results in complex challenges for the identification of high-risk areas. Spatial and temporal epidemiological tools could be used to support leptospirosis control programs, but the adequacy of its application has not been evaluated. We searched literature in six databases including PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, Scopus, SciELO and Zoological Record to systematically review and critically assess the use of spat

Quaternary ammoniums activate human dendritic cells and induce a specific T-cell response in vitro.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, neuro-muscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are the first cause of perioperative anaphylaxis. Epidemiological studies identified pholcodine, a quaternary ammonium-containing opiate as one of the sensitization sources. However, NMBA anaphylaxis exists in countries where pholcodine was unavailable, prompting the hypothesis of other sensitizing molecules, most likely quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Indeed, QACs are commonly used as disinfectants, antiseptics, preservatives, and detergents. Occupational exposure to QACs has been reported as a risk factor for NMBA an

Test-and-treat coverage and HIV virulence evolution among men who have sex with men.

HIV set point viral load (SPVL), the viral load established shortly after initial infection, is a proxy for HIV virulence: higher SPVLs lead to higher risk of transmission and faster disease progression. Three models of test-and-treat scenarios, mainly in heterosexual populations, found that increasing treatment coverage selected for more virulent viruses. We modeled virulence evolution in a population of men who have sex with men (MSM) with increasing test-and-treat coverage. We extended a stochastic, dynamic network model (EvoNetHIV). We varied relationship patterns (MSM vs. heterosexual), H

Vitamin D and schizophrenia: 20 years on.

Many epidemiological studies have highlighted the link between vitamin D deficiency and schizophrenia. In particular, two prominent studies report an association between neonatal vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of schizophrenia. In parallel, much has been learnt about the role of vitamin D in the developing central nervous system over the last two decades. Studies in rodent models of developmental vitamin D (DVD)-deficiency describe how brain development is altered leading to a range of neurobiological and behavioral phenotypes of interest to schizophrenia. While glutamate and gamma

Modeling Respiratory Syncytial Virus Adult Vaccination in the United States With a Dynamic Transmission Model.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is shown to cause substantial morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality in infants and older adults. Population-level modeling of RSV allows to estimate the full burden of disease and the potential epidemiological impact of novel prophylactics. METHODS: We modeled the RSV epidemiology in the United States across all ages using a deterministic compartmental transmission model. Population-level symptomatic RSV acute respiratory tract infection (ARI) cases were projected across different natural history scenarios with and without vaccination of adult

New tuberculosis vaccines: advances in clinical development and modelling.

Tuberculosis remains a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with 10 million cases and 1.5 million deaths in 2018. Achieving 'End TB' prevention and care goals by 2035 will likely require a new tuberculosis vaccine. The tuberculosis vaccine development pipeline has seen encouraging progress; however, questions around their population impact and implementation remain. Mathematical modelling investigates these questions to inform vaccine development and deployment strategies. We provide an update on the current vaccine development pipeline, and a systematic literature review of math

Modelling viral and CD4 cellular population dynamics in HIV: approaches to evaluate intervention strategies.

Computational models, such as in epidemiology, provide a powerful tool that can be used to systematically examine an array of dynamic interactions among populations as well as to evaluate altemate disease intervention strategies. The specific objectives in this study were to: a/ examine the interaction of cellular (CD4) and HIV population dynamics and evaluate the impact of the use of combination chemotherapies on viral and CD4 populations (Experiment #1), b/ demonstrate how modelling can be used to evaluate the impact of an intervention (condom use) on reducing the rate of HIV/AIDS (Experimen

Compounding Prevalence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in a 2024 Population-Based Study From Canterbury, New Zealand.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The epidemiological patterns of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can give insights into disease etiology and health system burden. This study aimed to measure the population-based prevalence in Canterbury and consider the region's position within the 4-stage epidemiological model of IBD. METHODS: Gastroenterology clinics in Canterbury were searched for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of IBD. Demographic and disease details (including Montreal phenotype) were extracted from individual medical records. The prevalence of IBD, Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC)

Prevalence of personality disorders in the general adult population in Western countries: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Personality disorder is a severe health issue. However, the epidemiology of personality disorders is insufficiently described and surveys report very heterogeneous rates.AimsWe aimed to conduct a meta-analysis on the prevalence of personality disorders in adult populations and examine potential moderators that affect heterogeneity. METHOD: We searched PsycINFO, PSYNDEX and Medline for studies that used standardised diagnostics (DSM-IV/-5, ICD-10) to report prevalence rates of personality disorders in community populations in Western countries. Prevalence rates were extracted and a

Integrating serological and genetic data to quantify cross-species transmission: brucellosis as a case study.

Epidemiological data are often fragmented, partial, and/or ambiguous and unable to yield the desired level of understanding of infectious disease dynamics to adequately inform control measures. Here, we show how the information contained in widely available serology data can be enhanced by integration with less common type-specific data, to improve the understanding of the transmission dynamics of complex multi-species pathogens and host communities. Using brucellosis in northern Tanzania as a case study, we developed a latent process model based on serology data obtained from the field, to re

Building medical toxicology capacity in Africa: a review and strategic perspective on the need for fellowship training programs.

INTRODUCTION: Toxic exposures and poisoning constitute a substantial but underestimated public health hazard throughout Africa, for which pesticides, drugs, traditional medicine, snake venom, and industrial chemicals are a disproportionate cause of avoidable disease and death. METHODS: This narrative review takes into account existing global models of toxicology education while considering African epidemiology and the constraints of its healthcare systems. MAIN FINDINGS: Partly due to this disparity between burden and capacity, medical toxicology is not well established on the continent as a w

A dynamic game of lymphatic filariasis prevention by voluntary use of insecticide treated nets.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been targeted for elimination as a public health concern by 2030 with a goal to keep the prevalence of LF infections under the 1% threshold. While mass drug administration (MDA) is a primary strategy recommended by WHO, the use of insecticide treated nets (ITN) plays a crucial role as an alternative strategy when MDA cannot be used. In this paper, we use imitation dynamics to incorporate human behavior and voluntary use of ITN into the compartmental epidemiological model of LF transmission. We find the equilibrium states of the dynamics and the ITN usage as it dep

Backtracking: Improved methods for identifying the source of a deliberate release of Bacillus anthracis from the temporal and spatial distribution of cases.

Reverse epidemiology is a mathematical modelling tool used to ascertain information about the source of a pathogen, given the spatial and temporal distribution of cases, hospitalisations and deaths. In the context of a deliberately released pathogen, such as Bacillus anthracis (the disease-causing organism of anthrax), this can allow responders to quickly identify the location and timing of the release, as well as other factors such as the strength of the release, and the realized wind speed and direction at release. These estimates can then be used to parameterise a predictive mechanistic mod

Natural History of HPV Infection across the Lifespan: Role of Viral Latency.

Large-scale epidemiologic studies have been invaluable for elaboration of the causal relationship between persistent detection of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the development of invasive cervical cancer. However, these studies provide limited data to adequately inform models of the individual-level natural history of HPV infection over the course of a lifetime, and particularly ignore the biological distinction between HPV-negative tests and lack of infection (i.e., the possibility of latent, undetectable HPV infection). Using data from more recent epidemiological studies,

Erectile dysfunction.

In the past 30 years, advances in basic science have been instrumental in the evolution of the male sexual health treatment paradigm from a psychosexual model to a new model, which includes oral and intracavernosal injection pharmacotherapy, vacuum constriction devices and penile prostheses for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This progress has coincided with an increased understanding of the nature of male sexual health problems, and epidemiological data that confirm that these problems are widely prevalent and the source of considerable morbidity, both for individuals and within relati
