The objective of this study was to investigate the outcome of neurosurgical treated children with suppurative intracranial complications (SIC) of sinusitis over the past 28 years in our hospital. We reviewed the cases notes of a series of 11 consecutive paediatric patients, who were subjected to surgery for sinusitis-induced SIC, retrospectively. Eleven children (10 males and only one female) were underwent neurosurgical procedure in our hospital between 1978 and 2006. Their age at the time of diagnosis ranging from 13 to 17 years (mean 15.27 years, SD 1.737). The commonest presenting symptoms

BACKGROUND We present a case of invasive sinusitis with rhinocerebral infection in a patient who had mild symptoms of COVID-19 infection and did not receive any immunosuppressive therapies. CASE REPORT A 49-year-old man with a history of uncontrolled diabetes presented to the hospital with multiple generalized tonic clonic seizures. He had recently been diagnosed with mild COVID-19 and was treated at home with supportive care only. He was found to have cerebritis in the right frontal lobe along with right fronto-ethmoid sinusitis. He underwent extensive testing with nasal endoscopy with gram s

OBJECTIVE: Variations in the upper attachment of the uncinate process (UP) are important because they can affect frontal sinus drainage and change the morphology. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is the primary technique used to treat chronic medically refractory rhinosinusitis. Uncinectomy is the basis of FESS technique to obtain the best possible result from surgery. The anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA) enters the nasal cavity through the orbital medial wall (lamina papyracea) may also be affected by the upper attachment of the UP. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible

We present a case of an 80-year-old female patient who had an extensive dural bleed after endoscopic sinus surgery. A review of the literature regarding the surgical tools and materials used to treat dural hemorrhage was performed. We describe our preferred method of using the combination of endoscopic bipolar, DuraGen Plus, and DuraMatrix to stop significant dural bleeding and show effective hemostatic regulation.

We report a case of isolated trigeminal sensory neuropathy associated with impairment of taste sensation following acute sinusitis. Sensory disturbance was distributed mainly in the ophthalmic division, and partly in the maxillary and mandibular divisions. No other cranial nerves were involved. An otological procedure resulted in complete recovery. The unique combination of trigeminal neuropathy and abnormal taste seemed to be caused by the infectious process involving the gasserian ganglion of the trigeminal nerve.

Sinusitis is a common problem that is routinely diagnosed and treated by most primary care physicians. Although most cases usually respond to appropriate therapy, some occasionally progress to the development of intracranial complications, including meningitis, osteomyelitis, epidural and subdural empyema, intracranial mucocele or polyps, and frank brain abscess. It is important to develop a rational approach to the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. A high clinical index of suspicion must always be maintained, since symptoms are often masked by previous antibiotic therapy. Radiologi

Complete and consistent occlusion of the nasofrontal duct of the canine sinus was achieved by introducing acrylic through a trephinated opening in the nasal dorsum. This surgical procedure resulted in the isolation of the frontal sinus, without impairing the integrity of the cavity. In this experimental canine model, potassium penicillin G and erythromycin lactobionate were absorbed into the blood equally well when placement was either in the intramuscular (IM) space or in frontal sinus cavity. When different concentrations of these antibiotics were injected into the IM space, peak blood level

The purpose of this study was to develop a paranasal sinus CT scoring system that could be used as a diagnostic tool to discriminate cystic fibrosis (CF) patients from control patients examined for sinonasal disease. The model should include as few and easily applicable criteria as possible, supported by statistical analyses and clinical judgement. We used data from 116 CF and 136 control patients. The CF patients were grouped according to the number of confirmed CF mutations: genetically verified (CF-2), or based on sweat testing and clinical findings alone (CF-1, CF-0). Nine paranasal sinus

OBJECTIVES: Investigating changes in temporal bone pneumatization (TBP) and paranasal sinus volumes (PSV) across different eras may help understanding not only changes in skull anatomy but also pathophysiology of chronic otitis media and sinusitis, respectively, which are common health problems.
METHODS: Eight skulls from the second century AD, 20 skulls were from the 10th-11th centuries AD, 20 skulls from the 16th-19th centuries AD, and 60 contemporary skulls were included in this cross-sectional observational study. Using computerized tomography (CT) scans, the PSV were calculated by multip

INTRODUCTION: Postmortem imaging (both CT and MRI) has become a widely used tool the last few years, both for adults and children. If it would be known which findings are normal postmortem changes, interpretation of abnormal findings becomes less ambiguous. Our aim was to describe postmortem intracranial radiological findings on postmortem CT (PMCT) in children, which did not have a relationship with the cause of death, and to determine whether these findings have a relationship with the postmortem interval or with medical interventions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected all consecutive pedi

BACKGROUND: There is no standard for postoperative care after paranasal sinus surgery.
METHODS: In a prospective study we evaluated the influence of modifications of postoperative care on wound healing after paranasal sinus surgery. We used a new method of documenting the natural dynamics of wound healing after endonasal paranasal sinus surgery that combines morphing and time-lapse video. Computer-assisted morphing means transformation of one shape into another by means of two-dimensional interpolation. The computer reconstructs the changes between the single frames taken by videoendoscopy at

Inverted papillomas which arise from the lining membranes of the nose and paranasal sinuses are relatively unfamiliar lesions which have been reported in the literature under a variety of titles. The uncertainly surrounding their etiology, their relationship to nasal polyps and their malignant potential have resulted in an ill-defined clinical approach to their management. The designation Inverted Schneiderian Papilloma is suggested as an appropriate title that best conveys the qualities of inversion, location and distinctiveness of character. The characteristic microscopic feature is the incr

Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma (IVLBCL) is a rare type of lymphoma, involving the lumen of predominantly small blood vessels, especially capillaries. The orbit is an uncommon site of involvement for IVLBCL, and diagnosis before autopsy is even more rare as most cases are established post-mortem. Herein, the authors describe a 73-year-old male who presented with 3 weeks of progressive bilateral ptosis and ophthalmoplegia. Computed tomography (CT) and subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed diffuse abnormal thickening and enhancement of bilateral orbital apices, superior orbita

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are rare lesions. The most common locations of DAVFs are cavernous, sigmoid and transverse sinuses. Anterior cranial fossa is one of the less frequent placement for DAVFs and the risk of hemorrhage in this region is increased. Reported hemorrhage risks have been ranged from 62 to 91 %, and an aggressive clinical course is more likely than a benign clinical course. A 47-year-old man was admitted to our emergency room with headache and the computed tomography revealed frontal hemorrhage. Neurological examination was normal. We applied cerebral angiography in

Linguatula serrata is a cosmopolitan parasite whose intermediate hosts are cattle, goats, sheep, and other ruminants. The adult form is found in the nasal airways, frontal sinuses, and tympanic cavity of canines and felines, and it produces hemorrhages and breathing difficulties. To elucidate if L. serrata produces enzymes that are capable of degrading tissues from the intermediate host, proteolytic activities in larval products were studied. Using the zymography technique, one major protease was detected in parasite in vitro-released products with an approximate molecular weight of 75 kDa. Th
