A parietal-frontal network studied by somatosensory oddball MEG responses, and its cross-modal consistency.

Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) of the brain have found that a distributed parietal-frontal neuronal network is activated in normals during both auditory and visual oddball tasks. The common cortical regions in this network are inferior parietal lobule (IPL)/supramarginal gyrus (SMG), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). It is not clear whether the same network is activated by oddball tasks during somatosensory stimulation. The present study addressed this question by testing healthy

Altered cortical visual processing in PD with hallucinations: an fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare fMRI activation during two visual stimulation paradigms in Parkinson disease (PD) subjects with chronic visual hallucinations vs PD patients who had never hallucinated. METHODS: Twelve pairs of PD subjects, matched for age, PD duration, and dopaminergic drug exposure duration, participated in this study. The authors examined group differences in activation during stroboscopic (flashing) vs no visual stimulation and kinematic (apparent motion) vs stationary visual stimulation. RESULTS: During stroboscopic stimulation, non-hallucinating PD subjects showed significantly gr

The neural correlates of cue-induced craving in cocaine-dependent women.

OBJECTIVE: Drug use reminders are associated with localized changes in brain activity related to intense drug wanting or craving in cocaine-dependent men. While cocaine dependence is prevalent and disabling in women, and certain clinically relevant sex differences exist, there is an absence of knowledge related to the neural correlates of cocaine craving in cocaine-dependent women. METHOD: The differential neural response to imagery depicting cocaine use and neutral imagery was defined by using [15O]H2O positron emission tomography (PET) imaging in eight cocaine-dependent women. Results were

Increased cholecystokinin release in the rat anterior cingulate cortex during carrageenan-induced arthritis.

Several human and animal studies indicate that the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) plays an important role in the affective component of pain. The neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK) is especially abundant in the ACC. CCK has been suggested to be involved in the mediation of anxiety and in the modulation of opioid effects in the spinal cord and medulla oblongata. However, its possible role in pain transmission or modulation in the brain is far less clear. In this study, a model of subchronic inflammatory pain in rats, carrageenan-induced monoarthritis, was used to study the effect of pain on th

Prefrontal cortical projections to longitudinal columns in the midbrain periaqueductal gray in macaque monkeys.

The origin and termination of prefrontal cortical projections to the periaqueductal gray (PAG) were defined with retrograde axonal tracers injected into the PAG and anterograde axonal tracers injected into the prefrontal cortex (PFC). The retrograde tracer experiments demonstrate projections to the PAG that arise primarily from the medial prefrontal areas 25, 32, and 10m, anterior cingulate, and dorsomedial areas 24b and 9, select orbital areas 14c, 13a, Iai, 12o, and caudal 12l, and ventrolateral area 6v. Only scattered cells were retrogradely labeled in other areas in the PFC. Caudal to the

Perinatal gonadectomy exerts regionally selective, lateralized effects on the density of axons immunoreactive for tyrosine hydroxylase in the cerebral cortex of adult male rats.

The catecholamine innervation of the cerebral cortex is essential for its normal operations and is implicated in cortical dysfunction in mental illness. Previous studies in rats have shown that the maturational tempo of these afferents is highly responsive to changes in gonadal hormones. The present findings show that perinatal hormone manipulation also has striking, region- and hemisphere-specific consequences for cortical catecholamines in adulthood. The effect of perinatal gonadectomy on catecholamines was examined in representative sensory, motor, and association cortices of adult male rat

Regional brain metabolic response to lorazepam in alcoholics during early and late alcohol detoxification.

Changes in GABA function have been postulated to be involved in alcohol tolerance, withdrawal and addiction. In this study we measured regional brain metabolic responses to lorazepam, to indirectly assess GABA function (benzodiazepines facilitate GABAergic neurotransmission), in alcoholics during early and late withdrawal. Brain metabolism was measured using PET and 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose after placebo (baseline) and after lorazepam (30 micrograms/kg intravenously) in 10 alcoholics and 16 controls. In the alcoholics evaluations were performed 2 to 3 weeks after detoxification and were

Connections of the parahippocampal cortex. I. Cortical afferents.

In the present study in the cat the parahippocampal cortex denotes the caudoventral part of the limbic lobe and is composed of the entorhinal and perirhinal cortices. The cytoarchitecture of these areas and their borders with adjacent cortical areas are briefly discussed. The organization of the cortical afferents of the parahippocampal cortex was studied with the aid of retrograde and anterograde tracing techniques. In order to identify the source of cortical afferents, injections of retrograde tracers such as wheat germ agglutinin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), or the fluo

Cerebellar-Cortical Connectivity and Prediction of Antipsychotic Treatment Response in First-Episode Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: The cerebellum has traditionally been associated with motor functions, but recent evidence highlights its critical role in cognitive and emotional regulation, contributing to the neuropathology of schizophrenia. Our previous data-driven research demonstrated that cerebellar-cortical functional connectivity can predict antipsychotic treatment outcomes in first-episode psychosis (FEP). The present study aimed to investigate specific cerebellar functional systems involved in treatment prediction. STUDY DESIGN: This study included 127 patients with FEP who underwent 12 weeks of antips

A large-scale multimodal investigation of the interplay between the serotonergic system and emotion processing.

Considering the complexity of serotonergic influence on emotions, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the interplay between emotion processing and the serotonergic system using simultaneous functional and molecular neuroimaging during pharmacological challenge while disentangling the effects of serotonin transporter (SERT) binding, genotype, and diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD). Herein, 153 subjects (44 with MDD) performed a facial emotion processing task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) before and after an acute intravenous application of 8 mg citalopr

Plasticity-Related Activity in the Hippocampus, Anterior Cingulate, Orbitofrontal, and Prefrontal Cortex Following a Repeated Treatment with D2/D3 Agonist Quinpirole.

Quinpirole (QNP) sensitization is a well-established model of stereotypical checking relevant to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Previously, we found that QNP-treated rats display deficits in hippocampus-dependent tasks. The present study explores the expression of immediate early genes (IEG) during QNP-induced stereotypical checking in the hippocampus, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Adult male rats were injected with QNP (0.5 mg/mL/kg; n = 15) or saline (n = 14) daily for 10 days and exposed to an arena enriched with two object

Common and unique connectivity at the interface of motor, neuropsychiatric, and cognitive symptoms in Parkinson's disease: A commonality analysis.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by overlapping motor, neuropsychiatric, and cognitive symptoms. Worse performance in one domain is associated with worse performance in the other domains. Commonality analysis (CA) is a method of variance partitioning in multiple regression, used to separate the specific and common influence of collinear predictors. We apply, for the first time, CA to the functional connectome to investigate the unique and common neural connectivity underlying the interface of the symptom domains in 74 non-demented PD subjects. Edges were modeled as a function of globa

Role of mu-opioid receptor in nociceptive modulation in anterior cingulate cortex of rats.

Lots of studies have demonstrated that anterior cingulate cortex plays important roles in the pain perception and pain modulation. The present study explored the role of mu-opioid receptor in nociceptive modulation in anterior cingulate cortex of rats with neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain model was set up by chronic constriction injury of the left sciatic nerve of rats. The hindpaw withdrawal latency to thermal and mechanical stimulation, by hot plate and Randall Selitto Test respectively, was used to evaluate the rat's responses to noxious stimulation. Results showed that intra-anterior cin

Enhancement of the rewarding effects of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine in orexin knockout mice.

Orexinergic neurons, which are closely associated with narcolepsy, regulate arousal and reward circuits through the activation of monoaminergic neurons. Psychostimulants as well as 5-HT-related compounds have potential in the treatment of human narcolepsy. Previous studies have demonstrated that orexin receptor antagonists as well as orexin deficiencies affect the pharmacological effects of psychostimulants. However, little information is available on the consequences of psychostimulant use under orexin deficiency. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the abuse liability of

Functional connectivity and structural analysis of trial spinal cord stimulation responders in failed back surgery syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain has been associated with alterations in brain structure and function that appear dependent on pain phenotype. Functional connectivity (FC) data on chronic back pain (CBP) is limited and based on heterogeneous pain populations. We hypothesize that failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients being considered for spinal cord stimulation (SCS) therapy have altered resting state (RS) FC cross-network patterns that 1) specifically involve emotion and reward/aversion functions and 2) are related to pain scores. METHODS: RS functional MRI (fMRI) scans were obtained for 10 FB

Cortical correlates of behavioural change in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural changes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are heterogeneous. The study aim was to identify the behavioural profiles of non-demented patients with ALS and their neuroimaging correlates and to elucidate if they are comparable to those reported in studies of the behavioural-variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). METHODS: Behavioural changes of 102 non-demented patients with ALS were assessed through the Frontal Behavioural Inventory (FBI), a 24-item scale assessing different behavioural modifications, mainly chosen from the core clinical features of FTD. Anterior cingulate volume predicts response to psychotherapy and functional connectivity with the inferior parietal cortex in major depressive disorder.

In major depressive disorder (MDD), the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been associated with clinical outcome as well as with antidepressant treatment response. Nonetheless, the association between individual differences in ACC structure and function and the response to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is still unexplored. For this aim, twenty-five unmedicated patients with MDD were scanned with structural and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging before the beginning of CBT treatment. ACC morphometry was correlated with clinical changes following psychotherapy. Furthermore

Effect of direct eye contact in women with PTSD related to interpersonal trauma: Psychophysiological interaction analysis of connectivity of an innate alarm system.

In healthy individuals, direct eye contact is thought to modulate a cortical route eliciting social cognitive processes via activation of a fast subcortical pathway. This study aimed to examine functional brain connectivity during direct eye contact in women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood abuse as compared with healthy controls. We conducted psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analyses in Statistical Parametric Mapping-8 (SPM8) using the superior colliculus (SC) and locus coeruleus (LC) as seed regions while 16 healthy subjects and 16 patients with a primary d
