Prevalence and characterization of small tympanic bone spicules and drumstick-like hyperostotic tympanic bone spicules in the middle ear cavity of dogs.

Rounded, sessile, hyperattenuating structures detected in computed tomography (CT) studies of canine tympanic bullae have been termed "otoliths." These have been proposed to represent dystrophic mineralizations or heterotopic bone formations in the middle ear that are potentially related to chronic otitis media. Aims of the current study were to describe the prevalence, macroscopic, and histological features of structures consistent with "otoliths" in the canine tympanic cavity. Tympanic bullae from 50 routinely necropsied dogs and 139 retrospectively retrieved CT scans of canine clinical case

Total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation for a rare disease derived from uremic secondary hyperparathyroidism, the uremic leontiasis ossea.

SUMMARY: We described six uremic leontiasis ossea (ULO) patients who underwent total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation. ULO demonstrated more a systemic disease than a simple craniofacial deformation. The surgery seemed an effective treatment to alleviate secondary hyperparathyroidism and to improve patients' quality of life. ULO may have a high postoperative recurrence tendency. INTRODUCTION: ULO is a rare disease derived from uremic secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). Previous studies mostly focused on the craniofacial deformations. This study aims to investigate the systemic fea

Prevalence and progression of radiographic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament and associated factors in the Japanese population: a 3-year follow-up of the ROAD study.

SUMMARY: The prevalence of radiographic cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in 1,562 Japanese from a population-based cohort was 1.9 %. The presence of OPLL showed a significant association with the femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD), presence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and plasma pentosidine levels. Only one new case of radiographic OPLL was detected, but OPLL progressed in all affected subjects. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to clarify the prevalence and progression of radiographic OPLL and the associated factors, us…

A classification study of clinical subsets in an inception cohort of early psoriatic peripheral arthritis--'DIP or not DIP revisited'.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple psoriatic arthritis (PsA) classification criteria exist, but these are based on established PsA when pre-existing joi … ease as a distinct subgroup in classification criteria was not supported. Synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis (SAPHO) syndrome was not observed as a separate subgroup. CONCLUSION: This study confirms that the application of classification criteria of PsA based on the pattern and number of involved joints may be confounded in established PsA by the effects …

Sclerosteosis involving the temporal bone: clinical and radiologic aspects.

Sclerosteosis is one of the rare, potentially lethal, autosomal recessive, progressive, craniotubular sclerosing bone dysplasias. Syndactyly of the second and third or other fingers is evident at birth. Hyperostosis and sclerosis are most prominent in the skull and tubular bones, and are frequently associated with excessive height and weight. The typical facial deformity is apparent by the age of 5 years. The changes involving the temporal bone include a marked increase in overall dimensions, extreme sclerosis, and narrowing and constriction of the external ear canal, middle ear cleft, interna…

Dysphagia caused by ventral osteophytes of the cervical spine: clinical and radiographic findings.

The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the clinical and radiographic findings in patients with dysphagia and ventral osteophytes of the cervical spine due to degeneration or as a typical feature of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH, Forestier Disease). Since 2003 we encountered 20 patients with such changes in the cervical spine causing an impairment of deglutition. A total of 12 patients had one solitary pair of osteophytes of neighboring vertebrae, 4 patients revealed two pairs and 4 patients had triple pairs of osteophytes. Thirty-two osteophytes were observed totally. A t…

Traumatic fracture in a healthy man: benign or pathologic?

OBJECTIVE: To describe the challenge of determining the correct diagnosis in a healthy adult male patient with a recent femoral fracture and … ong bones showed areas of almost complete obliteration of the medullary canal, along with prominent hyperostosis. Additionally, a "bone-within-bone" appearance to the thickened endosteum was noted. A bone scan demonstrated numerous areas of symmetric radiotracer uptake. Laboratory analyses were unremarkable, including a complete blood cell count, electrolytes, …

Traumatic fracture-dislocation of C5 on C6 through a previously solid multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Due to the underlying pathology and altered biomechanics, traumatic cervical fractures have been reported in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL), and combination of DISH and OPLL. However, incidence of a fracture-dislocation through a solid multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) construct with no associated underlying pathology of AS, DISH, or OPLL but severe osteopenia has not, to the best knowledge of the authors, been reported in the medic…

Skeletal evidence of health and disease in pre-contact Alaskan Eskimos and Aleuts.

There have been relatively few paleopathological studies of arctic populations to date, compared to other regions of North America. Studies … e examined macroscopically for the following indicators of health status: cribra orbitalia, porotic hyperostosis, trauma, infection, dental caries, abscesses, antemortem tooth loss, periodontal disease, and dental attrition. In addition, archeological and epidemiological data were used to help reconstruct the health of these populations. The goals of the analy …

[Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis in association with chronic inflammatory bowel disease: entheropathic CRMO].

The enterogenic reactive arthritides and entheropathic spondyloarthropathies are well-known entities. The so-called gut iteropathy concept offers an interesting working hypothesis to link the gut inflammation and the lymphocytic infiltration of the synovium. However, the association of rheumatic diseases belonging to the entity of the SAPHO syndrome with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) has only been rarely described in the literature. Among 138 cases of our (heterogenic) SAPHO cohort, we detected 5 patients (1 male, 4 females) with a proven association of SAPHO syndrome with IBD (in 4 cases

[Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis-- I. Review].

Juvenile and adolescent "Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis" (CRMO) is described on the basis of literature and analysis of 43 own cases (23 cases in children or adolescents). This systemic, non-purulent inflammatory disease occurs mainly metaphyseal in long bones, in pelvic bones or as spondylitis and is not as rare as it seemed. Basis of the disease is a primarily chronic, sterile, in phase of onset often monotopic (e.g. clavicle) and later frequently polytopic osteomyelitis, possibly triggered by an immuno-pathological process (e.g. Proprionibacterium acnes), and showing histologica

[Forestier's disease. Ear, nose and throat manifestations].

Forestier's disease is a skeletal pathology that sometimes affects the head and neck as a consequence of hyperostotic involvement of the cervical spine. We report the case of a 73-year-old man who had progressive difficulty in swallowing solids. Gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a bony mass in the hypopharynx. The case is described and the disease manifestations in head and neck are discussed.
