From Protective Factors to Mechanisms: Charting the Neurobiology of Schizophrenia Resilience.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Elucidating the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms that promote resilience to the adverse effects of schizophrenia's genetic and environmental risk architecture may reveal new avenues for advancing treatment and prevention. Identification of genetic loci associated with schizophrenia resilience enables links between protective polygenic variation, non-genetic resilience factors, and intermediate phenotypes. This approach may help identify protective traits and delineate potentially evolutionarily shaped resilience mechanisms that attenuate schizophrenia pat

Development and pilot testing of a risk assessment checklist for children of incarcerated parents in Hong Kong.

Children of incarcerated parents (CIP) are exposed to a range of biological, psychological, and social risks, yet existing risk assessment tools do not adequately capture incarceration-specific experiences. This article details the development of a comprehensive, theory-driven risk assessment checklist tailored to CIP aged 6-11, with consideration of the sociocultural context of Hong Kong. The checklist was developed using an integrative framework combining ecological systems theory and the biopsychosocial model. Items were adapted from validated instruments and supplemented with incarceration

The Space Between Action and Reflection: Nursing Students' Experiences of Debriefing Timing.

INTRODUCTION: Debriefing is widely regarded as a central component of simulation-based learning, yet limited attention has been given to how the timing of debriefing is experienced by learners in undergraduate courses that include graded simulation. METHODS: An interpretive qualitative study situated within a constructivist epistemological perspective was conducted. Semi-structured interviews were completed with 10 third-year undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a course that included simulation-based learning. Interviews explored participants' experiences of simulation, perceptions of

Enhancing public awareness: Insights from mothers and healthcare experts on postpartum depression - A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and early motherhood represent periods of significant psychological vulnerability. An estimated 10-15% of mothers experience postpartum depression (PPD) annually in India. Maternal mental health (MMH) represents a critical public health concern, impacting both maternal and child well-being. This study constitutes the first qualitative exploration in India to examine perspectives of both mothers and healthcare professionals regarding PPD for the development of culturally appropriate educational intervention. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study, condu

Healthy living concepts and definitions: A systematic review with concept analysis proposing a four-dimensional model.

INTRODUCTION: Despite numerous definitions and theoretical models, healthy living remains conceptually fragmented, lacking a unified framework capturing its dynamic, multilevel, and life-course nature. We systematically identify and conceptually analyse definitions and theoretical models of healthy living (1) to characterise heterogeneity in definitions, dimensions, antecedents, and consequences, (2) to develop a typology, and (3) to propose a unifying conceptual model. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review with an embedded concept analysis. Embase, Medline, Cochrane Central, Web of Scien

Measuring human behavior through controlled perturbations: a framework for reconstructing behavioral systems.

Human behavior is typically measured by relating observed responses to latent traits inferred from statistical models. Although this approach has produced powerful tools for psychological assessment, it largely treats behavior as a static property of individuals rather than as the observable output of an evolving dynamical system. Yet most behavioral phenomena emerge from continuous interactions between internal states and environmental conditions, generating trajectories of actions, decisions, and physiological responses over time. Here we propose a framework in which human behavior is measur

Closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback and brain-computer interface interventions for mental health: a review.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have been widely explored for detecting and monitoring mental health-related states, with many existing studies focusing on identification and classification. Such approaches are primarily observational and provide limited support for intervention. Closed-loop EEG-based BCIs address this limitation by incorporating real-time feedback to observe neural activity. A key paradigm within this context is neurofeedback, in which users learn to modulate their own brain activity, with the aim of supporting improvements in mental states a

Development and validation of a risk prediction model for demoralization syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Demoralization syndrome (DS), characterized by helplessness, hopelessness, and diminished self-worth, is a common but underrecognized psychological distress in chronic diseases. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects over 537 million adults worldwide, yet DS remains underexplored in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study using a convenience sampling method was conducted to recruit 852 patients with T2DM from a hospital in China between October 2023 and October 2024. Participants were divided into a training set (n = 598) and a temporal validation set (n =

Suicidal ideation in family caregivers of patients with dementia, cancer, stroke, and ischemic heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation among caregivers has drawn increasing attention. However, most prior studies have examined single diseases and provide limited comparative evidence. Furthermore, evidence focusing on family caregivers of community-dwelling adults with chronic diseases remains limited. Using nationally representative data of community-dwelling adults, we assessed the association between caregiving and suicidal ideation across four high-burden conditions: dementia, cancer, stroke, and ischemic heart disease (IHD). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using 2007-2021 dat

From vulnerability to recovery: An eight-stage integrative model of substance use disorder derived from qualitative content analysis of 991 first-person narratives.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a multifaceted crisis shaped by the interaction of biological, psychological, relational, and structural forces across the life course. Despite the proliferation of integrated SUD frameworks, existing models insufficiently address stage-based progression, institutional barriers, socio-structural determinants, and the lived mechanisms connecting vulnerability to initiation, entrenchment, crisis, and recovery. This study addresses these gaps through qualitative content analysis of 991 in-depth interview transcripts drawn from Soft White Underbelly, a publicly acce

Clinical feature grouping-based FT-Transformer for postpartum depression risk prediction: a longitudinal cohort study in perinatal women.

Postpartum depression (PPD) poses risks to maternal health and family relationships, making identification of high-risk individuals important. Most PPD prediction models treat clinical variables as an undifferentiated set and rarely use the clinical grouping structure of risk factors. Using perinatal and postpartum data from 1138 women, including clinical characteristics, biochemical indicators, and psychological assessments such as the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), with PPD defined as an Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) score of at lea

The effect of surgical prehabilitation on autonomic nervous system regulation: Rationale and design of the TUNE trial.

BACKGROUND: Prehabilitation improves physiological readiness for major surgery; however, its implementation and evaluation remain inconsistent, particularly in thoracic surgery. Current assessments largely rely on functional tests, which are difficult to standardize and provide limited knowledge of biological resilience. Heart-rate variability (HRV) is an objective marker of autonomic nervous system balance and is already widely used in sports medicine to guide training intensity and evaluate the relationship between physiological stress and recovery. Given its ability to capture the dynamicit
