I-Brainer: Artificial intelligence/Internet of Things (AI/IoT)-Powered Detection of Brain Cancer.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Brain tumour is characterized by its aggressive nature and low survival rate and thus regarded as one of the deadliest diseases. Thus, miss-diagnosis or miss-classification of brain tumour can lead to miss treatment or incorrect treatment and reduce survival chances. Therefore, there is need to develop a technique that can identify and detect brain tumour at early stages. METHODS: Here, we proposed a framework titled I-Brainer which is an Artificial Intelligence/Internet of Things (AI/IoT)-powered classification of MRI. We employed a Br35H+SARTAJ brain MRI dataset which

Deep learning for quality assessment of axial T2-weighted prostate MRI: a tool to reduce unnecessary rescanning.

BACKGROUND: T2-weighted images are a critical component of prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and it would be useful to automatically assess image quality (IQ) on a patient-specific basis without radiologist oversight. METHODS: This retrospective study comprised 1,412 axial T2-weighted prostate scans. Four experienced uroradiologists graded IQ using a 0-to-3 scale (0 = uninterpretable; 1 = marginally interpretable; 2 = adequately diagnostic; 3 = more than adequately diagnostic), binarized into nondiagnostic (IQ0 or IQ1), requiring rescanning, and diagnostic (IQ2 or IQ3), not requiring

A bootstrapping residuals approach to determine the error in quantitative functional lung imaging.

PURPOSE: To implement and validate an algorithm to determine the statistical errors in self-gated non-contrast-enhanced functional lung imaging. METHODS: A bootstrapping residuals approach to determine the error in quantitative functional lung imaging is proposed. Precision and accuracy of the median error over the lungs, as well as reproducibility of the approach were investigated in 7 volunteers. The algorithm was additionally applied to data acquired in a patient with cystic fibrosis. RESULTS: The obtained bootstrapping error maps appear comparable to the error maps determined from repeat

Deep learning-based automated detection and segmentation of bone and traumatic bone marrow lesions from MRI following an acute ACL tear.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic bone marrow lesions (BML) are frequently identified on knee MRI scans in patients following an acute full-thickness, complete ACL tear. BMLs coincide with regions of elevated localized bone loss, and studies suggest these may act as a precursor to the development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. This study addresses the labour-intensive manual assessment of BMLs by using a 3D U-Net for automated identification and segmentation from MRI scans. METHODS: A multi-task learning approach was used to segment both bone and BML from T2 fat-suppressed (FS) fast spin echo (FSE)

Exploring the impact of super-resolution deep learning on MR angiography image quality.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to assess the effect of super-resolution deep learning-based reconstruction (SR-DLR), which uses k-space properties, on image quality of intracranial time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) at 3 T. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 35 patients who underwent intracranial TOF-MRA using a 3-T MRI system with SR-DLR based on k-space properties in October and November 2022. We reconstructed MRA with SR-DLR (matrix = 1008 × 1008) and MRA without SR-DLR (matrix = 336 × 336). We measured the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast, and contra

Altered Processing of Complex Visual Stimuli in Patients with Postconcussive Visual Motion Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vestibular symptoms are common after concussion. Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening identifies vestibular impairment, including postconcussive visual motion sensitivity, though the underlying functional brain alterations are not defined. We hypothesized that alterations in multisensory processing are responsible for postconcussive visual motion sensitivity, are detectable on fMRI, and correlate with symptom severity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with subacute postconcussive visual motion sensitivity and 10 healthy control subjects underwent vestibular testing

Abbreviated MR Imaging for Breast Cancer.

Breast MR imaging is the most sensitive imaging method for the detection of breast cancer and detects more aggressive malignancies than mammography and ultrasound examination. Despite these advantages, breast MR imaging has low use rates for breast cancer screening. Abbreviated breast MR imaging, in which a limited number of breast imaging sequences are obtained, has been proposed as a way to solve cost and patient tolerance issues while preserving the high cancer detection rate of breast MR imaging. This review discusses abbreviated breast MR imaging, including protocols, multicenter clinical

Automated separation of diffusely abnormal white matter from focal white matter lesions on MRI in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous histopathology and MRI studies have addressed the differences between focal white matter lesions (FWML) and diffusely abnormal white matter (DAWM) in multiple sclerosis (MS). These two categories of white matter T2-weighted (T2w) hyperintensity show different degrees of demyelination, axonal loss and immune cell density on histopathology, potentially offering distinct correlations with symptoms. OBJECTIVES: 1) To automate the separation of FWML and DAWM using T2w MRI intensity thresholds and to investigate their differences in magnetization transfer ratios (MTR), which ar

White matter abnormalities across different epilepsy syndromes in adults: an ENIGMA-Epilepsy study.

The epilepsies are commonly accompanied by widespread abnormalities in cerebral white matter. ENIGMA-Epilepsy is a large quantitative brain imaging consortium, aggregating data to investigate patterns of neuroimaging abnormalities in common epilepsy syndromes, including temporal lobe epilepsy, extratemporal epilepsy, and genetic generalized epilepsy. Our goal was to rank the most robust white matter microstructural differences across and within syndromes in a multicentre sample of adult epilepsy patients. Diffusion-weighted MRI data were analysed from 1069 healthy controls and 1249 patients: t

The Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Evaluation of Knee Pathology.

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds the potential to revolutionize the field of radiology by increasing the efficiency and accuracy of both interpretive and noninterpretive tasks. We have only just begun to explore AI applications in the diagnostic evaluation of knee pathology. Experimental algorithms have already been developed that can assess the severity of knee osteoarthritis from radiographs, detect and classify cartilage lesions, meniscal tears, and ligament tears on magnetic resonance imaging, provide automatic quantitative assessment of tendon healing, detect fractures on radiographs, a

Topological Alterations of the Structural Brain Connectivity Network in Children with Juvenile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We used diffusion MR imaging to investigate the structural brain connectivity networks in juvenile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disease of childhood. Although changes in conventional MR imaging are typically not visually apparent in children aged <10 years, we previously found significant microstructural abnormalities by using diffusion MR imaging. Therefore, we hypothesized that the structural connectivity networks would also be affected in the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We acquired diffusion MR imaging data from 14 childr

Dynamic Graph Theoretical Analysis of Functional Connectivity in Parkinson's Disease: The Importance of Fiedler Value.

Graph theoretical analysis is a powerful tool for quantitatively evaluating brain connectivity networks. Conventionally, brain connectivity is assumed to be temporally stationary, whereas increasing evidence suggests that functional connectivity exhibits temporal variations during dynamic brain activity. Although a number of methods have been developed to estimate time-dependent brain connectivity, there is a paucity of studies examining the utility of brain dynamics for assessing brain disease states. Therefore, this paper aims to assess brain connectivity dynamics in Parkinson's disease (PD)

Volumetric MRI Analysis of Plexiform Neurofibromas in Neurofibromatosis Type 1: Comparison of Two Methods.

OBJECTIVES: Plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) are complex, histologically benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors that are challenging to measure by simple line measurements. Computer-aided volumetric segmentation of PN has become the recommended method to assess response in clinical trials directed at PN. Different methods for volumetric analysis of PN have been developed. The goal of this study is to test the level of agreement in volume measurements and in interval changes using two separate methods of volumetric magnetic resonance imaging analysis. METHODS: Three independent volume measurements

Longitudinal changes in reading network connectivity related to skill improvement.

Attempts to characterize the neural differences between individuals with and without dyslexia generally point to reduced activation in and connectivity between brain areas in a reading network composed of the inferior frontal gyrus, the ventral occipito-temporal cortex, and the dorsal temporo-parietal circuit. However, developmental work on brain activity during reading has indicated that some brain areas show developmental decreases in activation with age. Thus, reading network connectivity may also show decreases that are positively associated with increases in reading ability. However, the

Early cortical gray matter loss and cognitive correlates in non-demented Parkinson's patients.

BACKGROUND: Whereas the motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been related to deficits in basal ganglia (BG) structures, neural correlates of cognitive changes remain to be fully defined. This study tested the hypothesis that cognitive changes in non-demented PD may be related to cortical gray matter (GM) loss. METHODS: High-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance images of the brain and comprehensive cognitive function tests were acquired in 40 right-handed, non-demented PD subjects and 40 matched controls. GM changes were assessed using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in FSL. VB
