Tongue thrust usually develops in the presence of anterior open bite in order to achieve anterior valve function. In the literature, tongue thrust is described both as the result and the cause of open bite. If it is an adaptation to malocclusion, then tongue posture and deglutitive tongue movements should change after treatment. In this case report, an adult who had skeletal open bite and Class II malocclusion caused by mandibular retrusion was treated surgically. The mandible was advanced in a forward and upward direction with a sagittal split osteotomy. The open bite and Class II malocclusio

Achieving ideal results when treating a difficult malocclusion is a challenge that orthodontists frequently encounter. Maintaining those results is sometimes more challenging than the correction itself. As specialists in orthodontics, we should be able to apply bone physiology concepts during the diagnosis and treatment planning process and predict how bone will react after biomechanical stimuli. Understanding bone physiology and the biology of tissue response during orthodontic tooth movement should allow us to develop the proper mechanical design and consequently the therapeutic procedures n

The approach to orthodontic diagnosis has changed gradually but steadily over the past 2 decades. The shift away from diagnosis based entirely on hard tissue evaluations has been a result of a broadened recognition of the importance of facial and smile appearance to our patients, and how they change over time. The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate the integration of the new soft tissue paradigm into long-term treatment planning, with a focus on the esthetic goals of treatment.

This report describes the use of the miniscrew as orthodontic anchorage in maxillary protrusion with a spaced arch and midline deviation in a 16-year-old female patient. In cases with midline deviation, a cant in the maxillary occlusal plane is often observed. Thus, the authors used the miniscrew to control the vertical dimension, thereby flattening the maxillary occlusal plane, and to close and retract the incisors to improve her convex profile. Effective incisor intrusion to correct the deep overbite was also observed. In addition, functional evaluation by a 6-degrees-of-freedom jaw movement

This case report describes a complex full-step Class II high-angle case in an adult patient treated with lingual straight-wire appliance, premolar extractions and orthognathic surgery. With the twofold aim of obtaining ideal occlusal relationship and aesthetic improvement, surgical treatment with appropriate biomechanical strategies, including anchorage control during extraction space closure, are needed to achieve the planned results. This case report demonstrates the possibility of solving successfully severe sagittal, transverse and vertical discrepancies in an adult patient with surgical t

Nonextraction treatment has become more popular with the development of temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs). This report presents simple and efficient mandibular molar distalization methods using ramal plates and buccal miniscrews in nonextraction treatment and describes their biomechanics. The application of TSADs facilitates distalization of both the maxillary and mandibular dentition. The placement of ramal plates prevents gingival impingement at the retromolar region and maximizes the distalization. Meanwhile, mandibular distalization via buccal miniscrews would require applicatio

BACKGROUND: One of the arguments against early intervention for micrognathia in Pierre Robin sequence is the concept that the growth of the mandible will eventually "catch up." Long-term growth of the mandible and occlusal relationships of conservatively managed Pierre Robin sequence patients remain unknown. In this study, the authors evaluated the orthognathic surgery requirements for Pierre Robin sequence patients at skeletal maturity.
METHODS: Orthognathic surgical requirements of conservatively managed Pierre Robin sequence and isolated cleft patients (aged ≥13 years) at two institutions

BACKGROUND: A common strategy in the non-extraction treatment of Class II molar relationship is maxillary molar distalization, which could increase lower face height and cause clockwise mandibular rotation. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyse the effects on vertical dentoskeletal dimension of young adults treated with sequential distalization with orthodontic aligners.
METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 10 subjects (8 females 2 males; mean age 22.7 ± 5.3 years) treated with upper molars sequential distalization with orthodontic aligners (Invisalign, Align Technology,

The treatment of skeletal deep bite does not remain stable. The patient was a Japanese woman aged 16 years and 10 months. Her chief complaint was maxillary protrusion. The degree of overjet was + 10.5 mm and overbite was + 5.0 mm; the intermolar relationship was Angle Class II. An excessive curve of Spee was observed in the mandibular arch. A hypodivergent skeletal pattern was indicated by a small mandibular plane angle and gonial angle. The maxillary incisors were proclined and the mandibular incisors were retroclined. Based on the above findings, the patient was diagnosed with Angle Class II
