Correlates of fatality risk of vulnerable road users in Delhi.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and users of motorised two-wheelers account for more than 85% of all the road fatality victims in Delhi. The three categories are often referred to as vulnerable road users (VRUs). Using Bayesian hierarchical approach with a Poisson-lognormal regression model, we present spatial analysis of road fatalities of VRUs with wards as areal units. The model accounts for spatially uncorrelated as well as correlated error. The explanatory variables include demographic factors, traffic characteristics, as well as built environment features. We found that fatality risk has a negati

Describing and comparing the characteristics of injured bicyclists and other injured road users: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to establish the frequency and characteristics (e.g. socioeconomic, pre-injury, and crash-related parameters) of injured bicyclists and other injured road users. METHODS: 748 participants aged ≥17 years who had sustained a minor or non-catastrophic injury in a land-transport crash, were interviewed after presenting to a metro hospital emergency department in New South Wales, Australia. A telephone-administered questionnaire obtained information on socio-economic, pre-injury health, and crash-related characteristics. These factors were then compared between injured bicycli

Prevalence of psychoactive substance use among commercial motorcyclists and its health and social consequences in Zaria, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In recent years commercial motorcyclists (Okada riders) have come to bridge the huge public transport gap in most cities across the country. However, this is not without the dangers they pose to themselves, passengers and to other road users. It is claimed that some of these Okada riders operate under the influence of drugs and other substances. But there are few community-based studies that have investigated the problem in this part of Nigeria. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence, health and social consequences of psychoactive substance use among commer

Long-term outcomes of dual locking-plate fixation for bicondylar tibial plateau fractures via two mini-incisions: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Bicondylar tibial plateau fractures are complex injuries that frequently involve a posteromedial fragment and carry a high risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. However, long-term outcome data on dual locking-plate fixation are limited, particularly in Southeast Asian populations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate longitudinal clinical and imaging outcomes of bicondylar tibial plateau fractures managed with anterolateral and posteromedial locking plates via two mini-incisions. METHODS: This prospective study included 55 patients treated with open reduc

CT-Visible Venous Fat Embolus Associated With a Femoral Shaft Fracture in a Polytrauma Patient: A Case Report.

Venous fat emboli are uncommon but important radiological findings in patients with long-bone fractures, and direct visualization on computed tomography (CT) is rarely reported. We report the case of a 34-year-old man with polytrauma, reported to be hemodynamically stable, admitted after a motorcycle road traffic accident. Initial radiography demonstrated a complete, displaced fracture of the proximal third of the left femoral shaft. Whole-body trauma CT revealed a fat-attenuation intravascular lesion within the distal left external iliac vein extending into the proximal left common femoral ve

Neurological outcomes and risk factors for traumatic brain injury in two-wheeled vehicles users: A comparative study of motorcyclists, bicyclists, and scooter riders admitted to the intensive care unit.

Road traffic injuries (RTIs) involving two-wheeled vehicles are a leading cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The increasing popularity of short-term rental bicycles and e-scooters has raised public health concerns. We aimed to compare neurological injuries and neurosurgical utilization between scooter and bicycle (S/B) users and motorcyclists and to identify risk factors associated with TBI and its severity. A retrospective single-center study including all two-wheeler RTI patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a trauma center between 2011 and 2022. Variables included demogr

Emergency liver transplantation combined with multivisceral resection after severe abdominal trauma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Liver transplantation (LT) after severe polytrauma is exceptionally rare. When damage-control surgery fails, multiorgan resection may be required as a life-saving procedure, with emergency LT representing the ultimate salvage option for patients with uncontrollable hepatic hemorrhage or irreversible liver failure. We report, to our knowledge, the first documented case of concomitant liver transplantation, splenectomy, nephrectomy, and total pancreatectomy following severe abdominal trauma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old male sustained severe blunt abdominal trauma following a mo

Proximal Row Carpectomy for Established Post-Traumatic Radiocarpal Arthritis Following Distal Radius Volar Rim and Scaphoid Fractures: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic radiocarpal arthritis can occur as a result of complex wrist injuries. Distal radius volar rim fractures associated with scaphoid fractures can result in progressive cartilage degeneration, pain, loss of motion, and functional impairment. Malunited distal radius volar rim fractures, where optimal stabilization is not done, can lead to radiocarpal incongruity and early post-traumatic radiocarpal arthritis. Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) remains a valuable motion-preserving salvage procedure for selected patients with advanced radiocarpal arthritis. CASE REPORT: A 32

Predicting car accident severity in Northwest Ethiopia: a machine learning approach leveraging driver, environmental, and road conditions.

Road traffic accidents (RTAs) in Northwest Ethiopia, a region with a fatality rate of 32.2 per 100,000 residents, pose a critical public health challenge exacerbated by infrastructural deficits and environmental hazards. This study leverages machine learning (ML) to predict accident severity, addressing gaps in localized predictive frameworks for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Our study aims to predict the severity of car accidents in Northwest Ethiopia via machine-learning techniques. Using a dataset of 2,000 accidents (2018-2023) from police reports, we integrated driver demograph

A Two-Year Prospective Study of the Mechanisms and Patterns of Limb Injury in Multiply Injured Patients at UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Multiple injured patients are patients who sustained injury to more than one system in the body, while a polytraumatized patient is the one who sustained injury to two or more regions of a system in the body. Better patient outcomes and effective management depend on an understanding of the patterns and characteristics of limb injuries in the multiply injured individuals. This is especially important in places with little resources, like Southwestern Nigeria, where trauma is common and it's important to make the best use of the few available medical resources. Therefore, the aim of

Outcomes of Surgical Management of Turf Toe: 12-Year Results.

Background "Turf toe" is a classical capsuloligamentous injury to the plantar surface of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the great toe. The name is synonymous with injuries sustained on artificial turf or hard grounds. The classical injury pattern is a hyperdorsiflexion injury with an axial load. The outcomes of these injuries are unpredictable and there are no clear guidelines for the management of these injuries. These injuries are debilitating and can lead to long-term problems and inability to return to pre-injury activity level if missed. We present a long-term surgical follow-up o

24 h mortality and its predictors among road traffic accident victims in a resource limited setting; a multicenter cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of road traffic accidents (RTAs) is on the rise contributing to the global burden of mortality as a major global health threat. It has been estimated that 93% of RTAs and more than 90% of the resulting deaths occur in low and middle income countries. Though death due to RTAs has been occurring at an alarming rate, there is paucity of data relating to incidence and predictors of early mortality. This study was aimed at determining the 24 h mortality and its predictors among RTA patients attending selected hospitals in western Uganda. METHODS: This was a prospective

Plate fixation using parallelogram prism iliac bone grafts for clavicle oblique nonunion with shortening deformity: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plate fixation using a tricortical iliac bone graft can provide a high ratio of bone union and restore clavicle length in cases of atrophic nonunion. However, the surgical treatment of clavicle oblique nonunions with marked shortening deformity remains challenging and unresolved. Here, we describe a case of clavicle oblique nonunion with shortening that was treated using plate fixation with parallelogram prism iliac bone grafts. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old man presented to our hospital with severe medial scapular pain. He had been diagnosed with a right clavicle mid-shaft fra

A Retrospective Cohort Study on the Clinical Characteristics of Patients with Surgical Blunt Bowel and/or Mesenteric Injuries among Motorcyclists and Car Occupants.

(1) Background: Surgical blunt bowel and/or mesenteric injuries (BBMIs) are rare but challenging for trauma surgeons. Surgical BBMI is associated with specific injury mechanisms, such as direct compression by the handlebar in motorcycle accidents or rapid acceleration and deceleration of the impact forces associated with seatbelt injuries in motor vehicle collisions. However, the discussions on the implications of BBMI and the mechanisms of road traffic accidents remain scarce. This retrospective study assessed the clinical and injury characteristics of surgically proven BBMI among motorcyclis
