Voiding Dysfunction Associated with Pudendal Nerve Entrapment.

The association of anthropometric (waist circumference) and hemodynamic (blood pressure) changes with abnormalities in glucose and lipid metabolism has been motivation for a lot of discussions in the last 30 years. Nowadays, blood pressure, body mass index/abdominal circumference, glycemia, triglyceridemia, and HDL-cholesterol concentrations are considered in the definition of Metabolic syndrome, referred as Visceral adiposity syndrome (VAS) in the present review. However, more than 250 years ago an association between visceral and mediastinal obesity with hypertension, gout, and obstructive a

Noninvasive monitoring of the autonomic nervous system and hemodynamics of patients with blunt and penetrating trauma.

BACKGROUND: To describe early effects of sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) activities measured by heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate variabilities simultaneously with noninvasive hemodynamic patterns in patients with blunt and penetrating trauma. METHODS: Descriptive study of 168 monitored trauma patients in a level I university-run trauma service. We studied HR and respiratory rate variability by spectral analysis as a measure of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in severe blunt and penetrating injuries beginning shortly after their admission to the emergenc…

Heart rate variability (HRV) in kidney failure: measurement and consequences of reduced HRV.

A common cause of death in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis is sudden cardiac death (SCD). Compared to the general population, the percentage of cardiovascular deaths that are attributed to SCD is higher in patients treated by dialysis. While coronary artery disease (CAD) is the predominant cause of SCD in dialysis patients, reduced heart rate variability (HRV) may play a role in the higher risk of SCD among other risk factors. HRV refers to beat-to-beat alterations in heart rate as measured by periodic variation in the R-R interval. HRV provides a non-invasive method for in

Chlorotoxin, a scorpion-derived peptide, specifically binds to gliomas and tumors of neuroectodermal origin.

Highly migratory neuroectodermal cells share a common embryonic origin with cells of the central nervous system (CNS). They include enteric, parasympathetic, sympathoadrenal, and sensory neurons of the peripheral nervous system, Schwann cells, melanocytes, endocrine cells, and cells forming connective tissue of the face and neck. Because of their common embryologic origin, these cells and the tumors that derive from them can share genetic and antigenic phenotypes with gliomas, tumors derived from CNS glia. We recently discovered that chlorotoxin (ClTx), a 4-kD peptide purified from Leiurus qui

Vagal regulation, cortisol, and sleep disruption in women with metastatic breast cancer.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between hypothalamic pituitary axis (HPA) dysregulation, vagal functioning, and sleep problems in women with metastatic breast cancer. DESIGN: Sleep was assessed by means of questionnaires and wrist actigraphy for 3 consecutive nights. The ambulatory, diurnal variation in salivary cortisol levels was measured at 5 time points over 2 days. Vagal regulation was assessed via respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA(TF)) during the Trier Social Stress Task. PARTICIPANTS: Ninety-nine women (54.6 +/- 9.62 years) with metastatic breast cancer. RESULTS: Long

Effect of ondansetron on the contractile responses to positive inotropic agents in electrically driven left atria of rats.

We studied the interaction of ondansetron with positive inotropic agents, including serotonin (5-hydroxytryptophane, 5-HT), noradrenaline, 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), calcium chloride, or with reserpine in isolated electrically driven rat atria. Concentrations of 5-HT ranging from 1 to 64 microg/ml increased atrial contractions in a dose-dependent manner. The inotropic effect of 5-HT in the right atria appeared to be weaker than that in the left atria. Ondansetron (30 microg/ml) depressed the positive inotropic effect of lower 5-HT concentrations . This effect was thought to be due to the local an

[Pupillary disorders - diagnosis, diseases, consequences].

Examination of the pupil offers an objective evaluation of visual function as well as the vegetative pathways to the eye. Essential information is gathered within a short time. This makes pupillary inspection a valuable part of the routine ophthalmological, neurological and general medical examinations. Due to the proximity of pupillary pathways to various anatomic structures, pupillary dysfunction can be caused by a variety of disorders, some of which may be life threatening. The ophthalmologist plays a key role in detecting pupillary disorders and in directing further investigations. Therefo

The ion channel ASIC2 is required for baroreceptor and autonomic control of the circulation.

Arterial baroreceptors provide a neural sensory input that reflexly regulates the autonomic drive of circulation. Our goal was to test the hypothesis that a member of the acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC) subfamily of the DEG/ENaC superfamily is an important determinant of the arterial baroreceptor reflex. We found that aortic baroreceptor neurons in the nodose ganglia and their terminals express ASIC2. Conscious ASIC2 null mice developed hypertension, had exaggerated sympathetic and depressed parasympathetic control of the circulation, and a decreased gain of the baroreflex, all indicative of a

Functional reactivity of central cholinergic systems following desipramine treatments and sleep deprivation.

This study examined the effects of acute and chronic desipramine, 24-h total sleep deprivation (TSD) and 96-h REM sleep deprivation (REMSD) on physostigmine-induced hypothermia, analgesia and behaviour. The effects of acute and chronic desipramine treatment on oxotremorine-induced hypothermia were also examined. Intraperitoneal administration of physostigmine (0.5 mg/kg i.p.) induced hypothermia, analgesia, purposeless chewing movements (chewing) and head tremors. While atropine given in a low dose (1.0 mg/kg i.p. 15 min prior) did not antagonize the hypothermia, chewing and head tremor associ

Low birth weight is associated with increased sympathetic activity: dependence on genetic factors.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight may be associated with high blood pressure in later life through genetic factors, an association that may be explained by alterations in sympathetic and parasympathetic activity. We examined the association of birth weight with cardiac pre-ejection period and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (indicators of cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, respectively) and with blood pressure in 53 dizygotic and 61 monozygotic adolescent twin pairs. METHODS AND RESULTS: Birth weight of the twins was obtained from the mothers. Pre-ejection period and respiratory sinus

Amelioration of cholinergic neurons dysfunction in aged rats depends on the continuous supply of NGF.

The present study was designed to examine whether NGF-induced improvement in morphology of senile basal forebrain cholinergic neurons persist after discontinuation of NGF treatment. Trophic effect of continuous intraventricular infusion of NGF was tested in the 4- and 28 months old male Wistar rats immediately after cessation of NGF and 3 or 6 weeks after termination of treatment. Immunohistochemical procedure for ChAT, TrkA, and p75(NTR) receptor has been applied to identify cholinergic cells in the basal forebrain structures. Using the quantitative image analyzer, morphometric and densitomet

The neuronal control of the lower urinary tract: A model of architecture and control mechanisms.

The human micturition cycle is controlled by central and peripheral nervous structures and connections. In literature, no complete or generally accepted model describes the principles of micturition control. In this paper, the integration of (neuro-)anatomy, (neuro-)physiology and control theory is used to describe and model the neuronal control of the lower urinary tract. Neuroanatomy supplies the most basic information necessary for the modellation of the peripheral pathways and central connections involved in the control of the uropoetic system. It is found that not all the nervous structur

Cyclic guanosylmonophosphate urinary excretion in parasympathicomimetic or parasympatholytic syndromes induced by reserpine or diphemanil-methylsulfate.

Parasympathetic hyperactivity is found in some infants presenting faint episodes and could be responsible of certain Sudden Infant Death Syndrome cases. Therefore it was interesting to look for a noninvasive biochemical indicator of parasympathetic activity. A parasympaticomimetic syndrome associated with muscarinic receptor stimulation, which has been followed during 48 h, was obtained in the awake rat by reserpine injection (6.25 mg/kg at T0 and T24h), and a model of prolonged parasympatholytic syndrome, by administration of diphemanil-methylsulfate (DPMS), a muscarinic receptor inhibitor, i

The AT-1 Angiotensin Receptor is Involved in the Autonomic and Neuroendocrine Responses to Acute Restraint Stress in Male Rats.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in cardiovascular and hydroelectrolytic control, being associated with the development of hypertension. The restraint stress (RS) model is an aversive situation, which promotes a sustained increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Stress leads to an increase of angiotensin-II contents both in the circulation and the central nervous system (CNS), as well as an increased expression of AT-1 receptors in CNS structures related to stress. Stressful stimuli are associated with the modulation o

Development of autonomic control of fetal circulation.

Development of parasympathetic and sympathetic reflexes controlling heart rate, vascular pressures, and blood flows was investigated in fetal lambs weighing 300-5,800 g (65-165 days' gestation). Cardiovascular responses to veratridine injections, atrial stretching, bilateral cervical vagotomy, and cholinergic blockade with atropine were used to test parasympathetic activities. Responses to propranolol and phenoxybenzamine were used to test beta- and alpha-adrenergic activities. Autonomic ganglionic blockade and stimulation provided additional information on both cholinergic and adrenergic syst

[Fetal monitoring: Current limitations and new approaches based on analysis of the fetal autonomic nervous system].

OBJECTIVE: Currently, fetal monitoring during labor is based on visual analysis of the fetal heart rate (FHR). This test is imperfect, with high intra- and inter-observer variability and a moderate to poor prediction of the occurrence of neonatal acidosis or anoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. In situations where there is an intermediate risk of acidosis, it is possible to use second-line tests such as blood scalp sampling (with pH or lactate measurement) or ST segment analysis of the fetal ECG. However, these invasive tests have many limitations and their place is debated. Some authors suggest a
