The aim of this study was to investigate compensatory lingual alveolar bone formation during tooth movement in young and old rats, using the vital bone marker tetracycline. Wistar male rats were separated into the following groups: 13-week-old rats without appliances (13C: control, n = 5), 60-week-old rats without appliances (60C: control, n = 5), 13-week-old rats with appliances (13E: experimental, n = 10), and 60-week-old rats with appliances (60E: experimental, n = 10). The upper first molars of the 13E and 60E groups were moved lingually using fixed appliances. On the third day of tooth mo

This article reports on the histologic findings from a larger study that was designed to investigate whether the attachment of scar tissue to underlying bone, which is normally found after palatal surgery, can be prevented by using biodegradable poly-(L-lactic) acid membranes. Von Langenbeck's procedure was simulated in 12-week-old beagle dogs without clefts. In one group normal wound healing was allowed. In two groups, membranes were inserted immediately after surgery or 3 weeks thereafter. Sham and control groups were also included. Histologic evaluation was carried out at regular intervals.

BACKGROUND: Supination posture is a common secondary deformity in brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) that results in functional upper limb impairment. Radioulnar synostosis using a vascularized ulnar periosteal flap has recently been reported, with dorsal forearm scarring as the main reported disadvantage. This report evaluates outcomes in a series of children with forearm supination deformity and complete pronation palsy secondary to severe BPBI undergoing radioulnar synostosis in slight pronation using a novel proximal pedicled vascularized radial periosteal flap (VRPF).

BACKGROUND: The complexity of the anterior labroligamentous periosteal sleeve avulsion (ALPSA) lesion is linked to an increased frequency of shoulder dislocations and a higher failure rate after surgical treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether arthroscopic treatment combining Bankart repair with a remplissage procedure reduces recurrence rates and improves functional outcomes compared to isolated Bankart repair.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients treated between 2009 and 2014 at our hospital for traumatic anterior sh

PURPOSE: The treatment of choice for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) has been established as burr-hole trephination with drain insertion; however, controversy remains over the best place for the drainage catheter. In this study, we compare the safety and efficacy of a subperiosteal drain (SPD) with that of a subdural drain (SDD) after one burr-hole trephination for CSDH.
METHODS: This retrospective and comparative study includes all CSDH patients treated with burr-hole trephination at our institution between January 2015 and December 2019. 59 patients were treated with SPD insertion (SPD gro

PURPOSE: The management of maxillary medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is challenging. Therefore, identifying the proper treatment is important. This study aimed to evaluate the surgical treatment of maxillary MRONJ using single-layer closure with mucoperiosteal flap and double-layer closure with buccal fat pad flap (BFPF) and mucoperiosteal flap and to find the outcomes after rehabilitation with obturators.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted and included all surgically treated and followed-up maxillary MRONJ cases in a single center. Demographics and clinical d

Not many case reports of suspected child abuse as assessed solely on skeletal remains are available. Forensic anthropologists have intimate knowledge of normal skeletal anatomy, bone trauma and processes of healing of bone and may therefore be of help in suspected cases of child abuse. Patterns of trauma in juvenile skeletal remains which are suggestive of abuse include fractures in different phases of healing, multiple fractures, typical fractures on ribs and long bones and severe, complicated cranial fractures. The aim of this paper is to report on the findings of the analysis of the skeleta

Bone strength is, in part, dependent on a mechanical input that regulates the (re)modelling of skeletal elements to an appropriate size and architecture to resist fracture during habitual use. The rate of longitudinal bone growth in juveniles can also affect fracture incidence in adulthood, suggesting an influence of growth rate on later bone quality. We have compared the effects of fast and slow growth on bone strength and architecture in the tibiotarsi of embryonic and juvenile birds. The loading-related biochemical responses (intracellular G6PD activity and NO release) to mechanical load we

Labial and palatine maxillary clefts are treated by surgery, as for oronasal fistula. One of the most important parts of management is the timing of primary surgery in order to avoid growth disturbance. The authors describe the various possibilities to close secondary oronasal fistula. The timing and choice of surgical techniques are still debated and being improved. Various surgical techniques are available, from mucoperiosteal palatal flap to a free flap. Nevertheless, the mucoperiosteal palatal flap is the most commonly used. In some cases mucoperiosteal flaps are impossible to perform, so

OBJECTIVE: To describe a modified procedure consisting of a mucoso-periosteal flap palatoplasty with a marginal musculo-mucosal flap (3M flap). This is also the first report of a primary repair for complete cleft palate using the 3M flap. We describe the lengthening effect of the nasal mucous layer of the soft palate and evaluate the fistula formation rate associated with this method.
METHODS: This procedure has been performed on 21 patients with unilateral complete clefts and on 27 patients with incomplete clefts. A mucoso-periosteal flap raised from the hard palate was used mainly for closu

AIM: The behaviour of a neurocranial suture autograft in a plagiocephalic infant is described.
PATIENT AND METHODS: In a 7-month-old girl, born with right-sided unicoronal synostosis, part of the left-sided unicoronal suture was transplanted to the right-sided synostosectomy site. Also, in the pathological area, the periosteal 'layer' of the dura was surgically removed. The suture autotransplantation was integrated into the classical concept of radical remodelling, planned in a computer design environment. Growth of the suture was monitored by CT.
RESULTS: Suture patency and osseous growth w

This paper reports 16 cases of subperiosteal abscesses of the orbit due to acute sinusitis in childhood. They comprise 12.4% of 129 patients presenting with an 'acute orbit'. Acute ethmoidal sinusitis was the predominant cause. The typical clinical features, as well as CT scanning of the paranasal sinuses, orbit and brain, should assist in early diagnosis. If possible, the subperiosteal abscess and sinuses should be drained before loss of visual acuity or intracranial complications occur. Streptococcus milleri was the pathogen most commonly cultured. One patient in this series had intracranial

BACKGROUND: Medial-approach derotational humeral osteotomy is indicated in patients with brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP) who have interna … rly, thereby reducing the risk of nerve compression. The humeral diaphysis is then exposed, and the periosteum is elevated at the planned osteotomy site. A 6 to 8-hole plate (typically 2.7 or 3.5 mm) is temporarily applied, and proximal bicortical screws are inserted. A Kirschner wire is placed in the distal fragment to mark the desired correction angle, wit …

AIM: Comminuted radial head fractures pose technical challenges regarding visualisation and access for anatomical reduction and fixation. Th … sualisation of the radial head and its articular surface without the need to strip fragments of its periosteum and blood supply, avoiding the need for removal and 'back table' reconstruction. It also prevents the need to detatch the LUCL complex and offers a more robust reconstruction with a reliable healing potential through an osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral ossifying fibroma is a nonneoplastic inflammatory hyperplasia that originates in the periodontal ligament or periosteum in response to chronic mechanical irritation. Peripheral ossifying fibroma develops more commonly in young females as a solitary, slow-growing, exophytic nodular mass of the gingiva, no more than 2 cm in diameter. While various synonyms have been used to refer to peripheral ossifying fibroma, very similar names have also been applied to neoplastic diseases that are pathologically distinct from peripheral ossifying fibroma, causing considerable nomenclat…

Primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare soft tissue tumour type with two subtypes, dermal and subcutaneous. As deeper tumours confe … ve a peripheral histological clearance of 10 mm and negative deep margin (i.e. > 1 mm), down to the periosteum/fascia/muscle according to anatomical site. If this is not achieved, a re-excision would be recommended. However, prospective studies are needed for optimal guidance.
