Nursing students' informal use of generative artificial intelligence in relation to workplace violence during clinical placement: A qualitative exploratory study.

AIM: To explore how nursing students described and interpreted their use of generative artificial intelligence in relation to workplace violence during clinical placement. BACKGROUND: Workplace violence during clinical placement can affect students' learning, confidence and sense of safety. Although generative artificial intelligence is increasingly accessible in nursing education, little is known about how students use it when responding to distressing or uncertain clinical encounters. DESIGN: A qualitative exploratory study. METHODS: The study was underpinned by an interpretivist paradigm

The dialectics of trauma and political conscientization: A psychosocial study of activism for supporting sexual and gender minoritized communities in Brazil.

This qualitative study examined the dialectical association between psychosocial trauma and political conscientization in the lives of activists advocating for persons with marginalized sexual orientations and gender identities (2SLGBTQIA+) in São José dos Campos, Brazil. Drawing on participatory research and grounded in liberation psychology and intersectionality, the study involved collaboration with 10 activists through participation in advocacy activities, semistructured interviews, and collective reflection. Our reflexive thematic analysis indicated four main themes: (a) addressing psycho

Exploring Somali-born women's experiences with contraceptive services in Sweden through a reproductive justice lens.

Timely and equitable access to contraceptive services is a key component of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Evidence shows that immigrant women in high-income countries often receive inadequate contraceptive counselling. There is also limited knowledge about how contraceptive services can best be organised within health systems to meet their needs. In Sweden, the Somali population is one of the country's largest immigrant groups, facing a higher risk of adverse pregnancy and childbirth outcomes compared to Swedish-born women. This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of Somali

The arc of failure: how medical students move through self-perceived failure in clinical training.

PURPOSE: Failure is inevitable in medical training, yet what comes next remains poorly understood. This study examined how fourth-year medical students experienced self-perceived failure and moved through recovery or sustained distress. METHOD: Between November 2023 and February 2024, 20 fourth-year medical students at a single private, urban, allopathic medical school in the United States completed semi-structured interviews. Using reflexive thematic analysis, the research team coded transcripts inductively and interpreted findings through the lens of Transformative Learning Theory. RESULTS

Prolonged trigeminocardiac reflex following transvenous coil embolization for cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistula with brainstem edema: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: The trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) is a transient intraoperative phenomenon caused by chemical irritation during Onyx embolization of cavernous sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (CS-dAVFs). Prolonged postoperative TCR after coil-only embolization is exceedingly rare. OBSERVATIONS: A 79-year-old woman with a right CS-dAVF presented with progressive ocular symptoms and brainstem edema caused by posterior venous drainage. Despite spontaneous improvement of ocular findings, brainstem edema on MRI worsened, prompting transvenous coil embolization. Although dangerous venous reflux to th

Isolated Bilateral Foveal Hypoplasia Diagnosed in Adulthood Following Evaluation for Presbyopia.

Foveal hypoplasia, also known as fovea plana, is an uncommon congenital anomaly caused by incomplete foveal differentiation during ocular development. Although it is usually diagnosed in childhood, particularly in patients with associated ocular or systemic disorders, isolated forms may remain unrecognized until adulthood. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman who presented for the first time with persistent near-vision difficulty, initially attributed to presbyopia. Despite appropriate refractive correction, her visual symptoms did not fully improve. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilate

Anti-Yo related pure sensory ganglionopathy: a rare paraneoplastic entity.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory ganglionopathy (SG) results from involvement of the dorsal root ganglia. Clinically, it presents with asymmetric, usually non-length-dependent, sensory symptoms, sensory ataxia and reduced or absent tendon reflexes. Electrophysiologically, there is an absence or asymmetry of sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs). Etiologies include genetic, autoimmune, and paraneoplastic causes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Case report and review of the literature. RESULTS: We report a case of pure sensory ganglionopathy (SG) without cerebellar involvement associated with anti-Yo antibodies

A rare case: Spontaneous subdural hematoma in dengue hemorrhagic fever.

BACKGROUND: Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is caused by dengue virus infection. Complications of this disease can include neurological disorders in the form of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), although neurological complications of dengue are infrequent, with an incidence below 1%. ICH, a manifestation of dengue complications, has been reported, including subdural hematoma (SDH). It has limited management guidelines and has a poor prognosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 52-year-old man presented to the emergency department with a sudden loss of consciousness 1 h prior, preceded by a severe headache, nau

A Chlamydia Vaccine for Adolescents: What Do Parents Think? A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia remains a significant public health problem despite the availability of effective treatment. Chlamydia vaccines are currently under development, presenting a new opportunity to reduce the prevalence and prevent long-term sequelae. Ideally, a chlamydia vaccine would be administered to adolescents before sexual debut, a time when parents are primary decision makers. However, it is unclear how acceptable such vaccines will be to young people and parents. This qualitative study explores Australian parents' perspectives on the acceptability of a chlamydia vaccine for their ado

Binocular summation of pupil light reflex with different light stimulation in each eye.

Binocular summation of the pupil light reflex refers to the phenomenon where the pupillary constriction elicited by binocular light stimulation is greater than the expected response based on monocular stimulation. An increase in the total flux reaching the retina influences pupil constriction. Under binocular conditions, the combined light entering both eyes is greater than that under monocular conditions, which can affect the pupil's response. However, previous research indicates that equal luminance presented either to one eye or distributed equally between the two eyes cannot adequately exp

Successful Anesthetic Management Using Remimazolam in a Patient With Spinocerebellar Degeneration Undergoing Pulmonary Resection.

Spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD) comprises a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders mainly characterized by cerebellar ataxia, and the prevention of perioperative respiratory complications is of great importance in patients with cerebellar ataxia. Clinical papers addressing anesthetic management using remimazolam in patients with SCD, specifically those undergoing pulmonary resection, are limited. A 79-year-old man with cortical cerebellar atrophy, a sporadic adult-onset SCD, was admitted for pulmonary resection for primary lung adenocarcinoma. He has experienced chronic aspiration cause

Novel SMARCA2::DDIT3 Fusion in Primary Subcutaneous Myxoid Liposarcoma due to an Unusual Unbalanced Chromosomal Translocation.

Myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) accounts for 20%-30% of all liposarcomas, with most cases harboring the fusion gene FUS::DDIT3, while approximately 5% exhibit the EWSR1::DDIT3 fusion. We report the case of a 26-year-old male patient with a right upper arm mass. The tumor displayed the classic histological features of MLS, including small spindle/ovoid cells, variable univacuolated lipoblasts, and a prominent myxoid stroma with delicate arborizing vasculature. Despite these characteristic features, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) revealed no apparent rearrangement of the DDIT3 locus. Next-ge

Endoscopic endonasal approach for the resection of a clival meningioma: Two-dimensional operative video.

BACKGROUND: The endoscopic endonasal approach for the resection of clival meningiomas involves navigating through the nasal cavity and sphenoid sinus to access the clivus. This minimally invasive technique provides enhanced visualization and precision, allowing for effective tumor resection while minimizing damage to surrounding structures and shortening recovery time. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 43-year-old male who experienced intermittent headaches and dysphagia. Neurological examination revealed right-sided hemiparesis and abolition of the gag reflex. An initial computed to

Effect of ophthalmic preparation of methyldopa on induced ocular hypertension in rabbits.

Glaucoma is a type of ocular disorder with multifaceted etiologies characterized by progressive optic nerve damage and ultimately loss of visual field. This study aimed to evaluate the possible intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effect of an ophthalmic preparation of methyldopa (MD) in corticosteroid-induced ocular hypertension in rabbits. Forty New Zealand white male rabbits were assigned to the experiment and then randomly divided into five groups (n = 8). Ocular hypertension was induced by weekly subconjunctival injection of betamethasone suspension in both eyes. Animal groups included the

Glass in the Airways: A Bronchoscopic Challenge.

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) in adults is indeed a significant medical concern, albeit less common than in children. The increase in incidence with advancing age can be attributed to factors such as a decline in mental status and impairment of the swallowing reflex, which is more prevalent in the elderly population. The symptoms of FBA are highly variable, ranging from severe, acute asphyxiation, which may or may not involve complete airway obstruction, to more subtle signs like coughing, shortness of breath (dyspnea), choking, or fever. These varied presentations, coupled with the fact that

Is galvanic VEMP a prediction of the nerve origin and damage in patients of vestibular schwannoma.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies proved that certain proportions of vestibular schwannoma (VS) originated other than vestibular nerve of the eighth cranial nerve. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Unlike air-conducted sounds (ACS) and bone-conducted vibration (BCV), galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) evokes vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) from the vestibular nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Case-control study was conducted in unilateral VS patients pre-operatively. Healthy ears were controls. Patients examined ACS, BCV and GVS ocular VEMP (oVEMP) and cervical VEMP (cVEMP), caloric test, video head im

Facial disgust in response to touches, smells, and tastes.

Disgust serves to defend the body from the entry of toxins and disease. Central to this function is a strong relationship with the proximate senses of smell, taste, and touch. Theory suggests that distinct and reflexive facial movements should be evoked by gustatory and olfactory disgusts, serving to impede bodily entry. While this hypothesis has received some support from facial recognition studies, whether smell and taste disgusts actually produce distinct facial responses, is unknown. Moreover, there has been no assessment of the facial response evoked by contact with disgusting objects. To
