Robotic Sacrocolpopexy Simulation Model and Associated Hierarchical Task Analysis.

BACKGROUND: There are limited robotic dry lab training resources that include presacral dissection with vaginal and sacral mesh attachment for robotic sacrocolpopexy. Our objective was to create a simulation model to resemble the anatomy encountered during robotic sacrocolpopexy. Additionally, we sought to outline the steps required to complete a robotic sacrocolpopexy by performing a hierarchical task analysis. With the results of the hierarchical task analysis, we assessed the model's ability to provide an adequate platform for completion of robotic sacrocolpopexy procedural steps. METHOD:

Minimally invasive robotic-assisted excision of an aortopulmonary mediastinal paraganglioma.

Aortopulmonary paragangliomas are rare, neural crest-derived tumours that arise in the aortopulmonary window and present a significant surgical challenge due to their proximity to major vessels. In the relatively few cases reported in the study, thoracotomy and video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS) approaches have been utilized for the treatment of such masses. In this report, we describe the application of a totally endoscopic robotic-assisted VATS approach for the excision of an aortopulmonary paraganglioma.

Robotic Resection of a Left Brachiocephalic Vein Aneurysm Mimicking Thymoma.

A 70-year-old man was scheduled for the robotic resection of a 21×16 × 30 mm thymic nodule incidentally detected by a computed tomography scan (CT) for thoracic trauma after a domestic accident. Positron emission tomography (PET) scan confirmed a low [18F]-FDG uptake (SUVmax = 1,9). During the surgery, the mass showed to be a saccular aneurysm of the left brachiocephalic vein (LBCV). A complete tangential resection of the aneurysm, with the use of EndoGIA stapler (Covidien® Endo GIA™) at its origin, was performed. The patient's recovery was uneventful, and postoperative CT with contrast admini

Surgical Techniques for Myasthenia Gravis: Robotic-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery.

Robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) creates an extended approach for thymectomy in terms of locating contralateral phrenic nerve and upper poles of the thymus. RATS thymectomy is indicated in all non-thymomatous myasthenia gravis (MG) patients and thymomatous MG patients with resectable thymoma, typically Masaoka-Koga I and II. Left-sided RATS thymectomy is superior for anatomic reasons and in the special care patients with MG. Up to now, left-sided three-trocar RATS thymectomy is the perfect combination of radical resection and minimal invasiveness among various approaches for thyme

Design and Control of a Compact, Modular Robot for Transbronchial Lung Biopsy.

Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent and deadly forms of cancer, claiming more than 154,000 lives in the USA per year. Accurate targeting and biopsy of pulmonary abnormalities is key for early diagnosis and successful treatment. Many cancerous lesions originate in the peripheral regions of the lung which are not directly accessible from the bronchial tree, thereby requiring percutaneous approaches to collect biopsies, which carry a higher risk of pneumothorax, hemorrhage, and death in extreme cases. In prior work, our group proposed a concept for accessing the peripheral lung through the a

Image-Guided Mastoidectomy with a Cooperatively Controlled ENT Microsurgery Robot.

Mastoidectomy is a common surgical procedure within otology. Despite being inherently well suited for implementation of robotic assistance, there are no commercially available robotic systems that have demonstrated utility in aiding with this procedure. This article describes a robotic technique for image-guided mastoidectomy with an experimental cooperatively controlled robotic system developed for use within otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. It has the ability to facilitate enhanced operative precision with dampening of tremor in simulated surgical tasks. Its kinematic design is such tha
