Interpersonal distress is associated with sleep and arousal in insomnia and good sleepers.

OBJECTIVE: The interpersonal environment is strongly linked to sleep. However, little is known about interpersonal distress and its association with sleep. We examined the associations among interpersonal distress, objective and subjective sleep in people with and without insomnia. METHODS: Participants in this cross-sectional observational study included men and women with insomnia (n = 28) and good sleeper controls (n = 38). Interpersonal distress was measured with the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. Sleep parameters included insomnia severity, self-reported presleep arousal, and sleep

Model minority stereotype stress and depressive symptoms among Asian American science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students: The mediating role of rumination.

The model minority stereotype (MMS) is deeply embedded within the society of the United States, including in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This has resulted in the neglect of STEM Asian American students' psychological needs by researchers and service providers while simultaneously pressuring the students to pursue unattainable goals. The aim of the present study was to explore the mechanism of how stress from the MMS might be related to depressive symptoms. Based on Hatzenbuehler's (2009) psychological mediation framework, MMS stress was hypothesized to

Online emotion regulation treatment for maladaptive anger inhibition - an open-label pilot with a pooled interrupted time series design.

Despite documented risks associated with excessive anger inhibition, few treatments specifically target maladaptive anger inhibition. Building on a previously evaluated treatment for general anger, this study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a brief (4-week), therapist-supported online emotion-regulation treatment for maladaptive anger inhibition. In total 38 participants (89.5% female; M-age = 43.8, SD = 14.1) with elevated levels of maladaptive anger inhibition were offered treatment, which was evaluated using a pooled interrupted time series design (ITS)

Experimentally Induced Post-Event Rumination Alters Biological Stress Response Patterns to Repeated Stress.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination-the repetitive negative thinking about stressful events-impairs biological stress system activity. However, its impact on the habituation of stress responses, particularly of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, remains understudied. This study examined how post-event rumination affects the habituation of biological responses to repeated stress. METHODS: In this randomized experimental study, 47 participants were assigned to a rumination or control condition and exposed to two consecutive stress tasks. After the first stress

Comparing the effectiveness of behavioral activation in group vs. self-help format for reducing depression, repetitive thoughts, and enhancing performance of patients with major depressive disorder: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral activation has gained increasing attention as an effective treatment for depression. However, the effectiveness of Behavioral Activation Group Therapy (BAGT) in controlled conditions compared to its self-help programs requires more investigation. The present study aimed to compare their effectiveness on depressive symptoms, repetitive negative thinking (RNT), and performance in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial, 40 patients diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) were recruited based on a structured clinical

Effects of defeat and entrapment on suicide risk in university population: the role of rumination and sex.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is recognized as a significant public health issue, with adolescents/young people being a risk group of concern. Taking the integrated motivational-volitional model as a reference, this study focuses on analyzing the association between defeat and entrapment, on the one hand, and suicide risk, on the other, in a university population without depressive symptoms, while also considering the role of rumination and sex. METHOD: The survey study involved a community sample of 650 Spanish university students. A total of 524 students (150 men (Mage = 20.6, SD = 3.7) and 374 women

Social Media Exposure and College Students' Mental Health During the Outbreak of COVID-19: The Mediating Role of Rumination and the Moderating Role of Mindfulness.

In response to reports of people experiencing varying levels of anxiety and depression during the outbreak of COVID-19, researchers have argued that exposure to related information on social media is a salient contributing factor. Based on the integrated model of ruminative response style and the diathesis-stress model, it has been suggested that incorporating rumination and mindfulness may elucidate the potential mechanism underlying the aforementioned association. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of mindfulness in the association between so

Pain catastrophizing is associated with the Val66Met polymorphism of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor in fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a musculoskeletal chronic pain syndrome that impacts negatively patient's daily lives. Its pathogenesis is characterized by a complex relationship between biological and psychosocial factors not fully understood yet. Pain catastrophizing is associated with FM and is an important predictor of outcomes. This study aimed to answer two questions: (i) whether the allele and genotype frequencies of BDNF Val66Met (rs6265) polymorphism differs between FM patients and healthy controls (HC); and (ii) if the BDNF Val66Met polymorphism is a factor that predicts pain catast

Job demands, resources and work-related well-being in UK firefighters.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that firefighters are at risk of work-related stress and mental health problems, but little is known about the organizational hazards they experience. Insight is needed into the work-related factors that are most likely to threaten or protect their work-related well-being. AIMS: To identify levels of job demands and resources (including demands relating to workload, work patterns and the working environment, relationship conflicts, control, support, role clarity and change management) among firefighters, and to use a job demands-resources framework to examine the

Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Short Depressive Rumination Scale in a Nonclinical Sample.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is considered a transdiagnostic variable underlying common symptoms (e.g., depressed mood) across various mood disorders. Depressive rumination is one typical and frequent manifestation of RNT and is a well-known vulnerability factor of depression onset, maintenance and recurrence. Due to the time-related constraints in assessment settings and the association of rumination on sadness with diagnosis of depression, the rapid identification of individuals scoring high on this construct may become a useful screening tool in non-clinical samples. The main aim of t

Overarousal as a mechanism of the relation between rumination and suicidality.

Rumination, particularly brooding, is associated with suicidal ideation and attempts; however, mechanisms of these associations have not been identified. The present study examined manifestations of overarousal-agitation, insomnia, and nightmares-that have been linked to both rumination and suicide as indirect indicators of the link between brooding and suicidal ideation/attempts. A sample of 492 psychiatric outpatients (64.2% female), aged 17-65 years (M = 26.75, SD = 10.32), completed self-report measures before their intake appointments with a therapist. Results indicated that agitation and

Short-term antidepressant administration reduces default mode and task-positive network connectivity in healthy individuals during rest.

Resting-state studies in depressed patients have revealed increased connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) and task-positive network (TPN). This has been associated with heightened rumination, which is the tendency to repetitively think about symptoms of distress. Here, we performed a pharmacological neuroimaging study in healthy volunteers to investigate whether short-term antidepressant administration could reduce DMN connectivity. We recorded resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans in twenty-three healthy volunteers after two week intake of the combined

Beyond amygdala: Default Mode Network activity differs between patients with social phobia and healthy controls.

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a constellation of brain areas that decrease their activity during a wide number of different goal-oriented tasks as compared to passive "rest" tasks. DMN can be modulated by different factors such as emotional states, cognitive load of the task and psychopathology, including anxiety. Moreover, DMN seems to play a pivotal role in social cognition. For example, the ability to predict another person's behaviour taking his or her perspective modulates the activity of the DMN. Recent data from autistic patients support a role of DMN in social cognition as well. So

Self-concept and Narrative Identity in Youth at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Disturbances of the narrative self and personal identity accompany the onset of psychotic disorders in late adolescence and early adulthood (a formative developmental stage for self-concept and personal narratives). However, these issues have primarily been studied retrospectively after illness onset, limiting any inferences about their developmental course. STUDY DESIGN: Youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) (n = 49) and matched healthy comparison youth (n = 52) completed a life story interview (including self-defining memory, turning point, life challeng

Children with maltreatment exposure exhibit rumination-like spontaneous thought patterns: association with symptoms of depression, subcallosal cingulate cortex thickness, and cortisol levels.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is associated with pervasive risk for depression. However, the immediate cognitive and neural mechanisms that mediate this risk during development are unknown. We here studied the impact of maltreatment on self-generated thought (SGT) patterns and their association with depressive symptoms, subcallosal cingulate cortex (SCC) thickness, and cortisol levels in children. METHODS: We recruited 183 children aged 6-12 years, 96 of which were exposed to maltreatment. Children performed a mind wandering task to elicit SGTs. A subgroup of children underwent structura

Negative affect and psychotic-like experiences in social workers: mechanisms and the buffering role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Occupational mental health is critical in the high-emotional-labor field of social work. Grounded in the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study investigates the underlying mechanisms linking occupational stress to subclinical psychopathology. Specifically, we propose and test an integrative moderated serial mediation model to explore how Psychotic-like Experiences (PLEs) are statistically associated with Negative Emotion through dual cognitive-affective pathways, and how Mindfulness serves as a vital buffering boundary condition in such associations. METHOD

Prefrontal cortex hypoactivation in response to sleep-related pictures in shift workers.

Shift work can lead to mental health issues such as sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. Neural activation in response to external sleep-related stimuli may vary according to shift work patterns. In this study, we investigated the differences in brain activity in response to sleep-related stimuli between shift-worker (SW) nurses and healthy controls (HCs), and we also assessed the relationships between sleep-related problems and brain activity. The hypothesis was that shift workers would exhibit altered activation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) when processing sleep-related stimuli, re

Impulsivity in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder: exploring the mediating effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanism of impulsivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients is complex and still unclear. Previous studies have not thoroughly explored whether impulsivity in OCD patients is a result of the obsessive-compulsive symptoms themselves or other contributing factors. This study aimed to explore whether cognitive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and impulsivity in a clinical population with OCD. METHODS: This was a case-control study that recruited 65 OCD patie

Abnormalities of electroencephalography microstates in patients with depression and their association with cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of recent studies have explored underlying activity in the brain by measuring electroencephalography (EEG) in people with depression. However, the consistency of findings on EEG microstates in patients with depression is poor, and few studies have reported the relationship between EEG microstates, cognitive scales, and depression severity scales. AIM: To investigate the EEG microstate characteristics of patients with depression and their association with cognitive functions. METHODS: A total of 24 patients diagnosed with depression and 32 healthy controls were in

Mental and physical training with meditation and aerobic exercise improved mental health and well-being in teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teachers face significant stressors in relation to their work, placing them at increased risk for burnout and attrition. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about additional challenges, resulting in an even greater burden. Thus, strategies for reducing stress that can be delivered virtually are likely to benefit this population. Mental and Physical (MAP) Training combines meditation with aerobic exercise and has resulted in positive mental and physical health outcomes in both clinical and subclinical populations. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and potential effective
