Phenotypic resistance to ivermectin in Hyalomma anatolicum populations from north-western state of Punjab, India.

Hyalomma anatolicum is a multi-host ixodid tick species that significantly contributes to the spread of pathogens, posing economic and health challenges for livestock populations. This study assessed the acaricide resistance status to ivermectin in H. anatolicum field populations from north-western state of Punjab, India by larval immersion test. Dose-mortality response was analysed using probit transformation of percent mortality and logarithmically transformed drug concentrations, and lethal concentration (LC50, LC90 and LC99) and resistance ratio values were determined. Bioassay results rev

Diversity and eco-epidemiology of ectoparasites and Rickettsia spp. associated with the opossums Didelphis albiventris Lund in livestock farms from Argentinian Pampas region.

Many ectoparasite species serve as vectors for bacteria that are significant to both public and animal health, with wild, domestic and synanthropic mammals acting as reservoirs. However, limited information exists on the circulation and incidence of these vectors in Argentina. We examined the diversity, prevalence and abundance of ectoparasites, along with the presence of Rickettsia spp., of Didelphis albiventris Lund (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) within a rural landscape of the Pampas region, Argentina. We also analysed variations in ectoparasite populations concerning seasonality, livestock

Comparative phenotypic characterization of acaricidal resistance in Rhipicephalus microplus and Hyalomma anatolicum field populations from Marathwada region of Maharashtra state in India.

The Marathwada region, comprising eight districts of Maharashtra state in India, was surveyed to explore the current phenotypic resistance picture of Rhipicephalus microplus and Hyalomma anatolicum ticks against commonly applied synthetic acaricides (deltamethrin and cypermethrin) and organophosphate (coumaphos). The phenotypic resistance was identified in the larvae of ticks through larval packet test (LPT). The increasing resistance prevalence against synthetic pyrethroid chemicals in tick populations provides a major challenge to the livestock sector. Results indicate a high resistance leve

Resistance to ivermectin, doramectin and moxidectin in Rhipicephalus microplus isolates from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The Rio Grande do Sul state, plays a major role in the livestock industry of Brazil, concentrating 10 % of the country's herd of cattle. The parasitism of cattle by Rhipicephalus microplus, causes great economic losses to the producers in the area. The resistance of R. microplus to macrocyclic lactones class has been detected in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil since 2001. Side-resistance (i.e. resistance to one compound accompanied by resistance to other members of the chemical group) among the drugs of this class is an important condition, considering its implications in resistance management and c

Updated checklist, morphological descriptions, hosts and vector potential of ticks (Acari: Argasidae, Ixodidae) in Pakistan.

Ticks are serious threats to humans, companion and domestic animals, and wildlife throughout the world. Situated in a subtropical region, Pakistan has favorable climatic conditions for various tick species. In Pakistan, ticks cause large but unknown economic losses to both the livestock sector and dairy industry in the form of animal mortality and reduction in dairy products. There is a scarcity of critical knowledge concerning the morphological descriptions, hosts, and vector potential of ticks in Pakistan. To fill this knowledge gap, our study provides current information on the hosts and ve

Synergistic effects of EP-1 and ivermectin mixture (iEP-1) to control rodents and their ectoparasites.

BACKGROUND: Ectoparasites of rodents play significant roles in disease transmission to humans. Conventional poisoning potentially reduces the population densities of rodents, however, they may increase the ectoparasite loads on the surviving hosts. EP-1 has been shown to have anti-fertility effects on many rodent species, while ivermectin is effective in controlling ectoparasites. In this study, we examined the combined effects of EP-1 and ivermectin mixture (iEP-1) baits on rodents and their corresponding flea/tick loads. RESULTS: In males, the weight of testis, epididymis, and seminiferous

Identification of guanine and hematin as arrestment pheromones of poultry red mites, Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae) and their application in mite control.

Dermanyssus gallinae, also known as the poultry red mite (PRM), is one of widespread ectoparasite in the poultry industry worldwide, causing direct and indirect detriments to poultry as well as substantial financial losses. Novel control methods are urgently needed to improve the current acaricide-based control of D. gallinae. The control approach based on arrestment pheromone is environment-friendly but the related research is limited in PRMs. In the present study we found two compounds from the mite feces acting as arrestment pheromones of D. gallinae, which could lead to mite arrestment upo

Circumpolar diversification of the Ixodes uriae tick virome.

Ticks (order: Ixodida) are a highly diverse and ecologically important group of ectoparasitic blood-feeding organisms. One such species, the seabird tick (Ixodes uriae), is widely distributed around the circumpolar regions of the northern and southern hemispheres. It has been suggested that Ix. uriae spread from the southern to the northern circumpolar region millions of years ago and has remained isolated in these regions ever since. Such a profound biographic subdivision provides a unique opportunity to determine whether viruses associated with ticks exhibit the same evolutionary patterns as

First records of tick-borne pathogens in populations of the taiga tick Ixodes persulcatus in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The common tick Ixodes ricinus and the taiga tick I. persulcatus are the main tick vectors of Borrelia spirochaetes, TBE virus (TBEV) and of several other zoonotic pathogens in the western and eastern areas, respectively of the Palaearctic region. Recently, populations of the taiga tick were, for the first time, detected in northern Sweden. This prompted us to investigate if they harbour human pathogens. METHODS: A total of 276 I. persulcatus ticks (136 males, 126 females and 14 nymphs) and one I. ricinus nymph was collected by the cloth-dragging method in northern Sweden in July-

Evaluation of vaccine potential of 2-Cys peroxiredoxin from the hard tick Haemaphysalis longicornis.

Ticks require blood feeding on vertebrate animals throughout their life cycle, and also concentrate the iron-containing blood, resulting in a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). High concentrations of H2O2 are harmful to organisms, due to their serious damage of macromolecules. Ticks have antioxidant enzymes, such as peroxiredoxins (Prxs), that scavenge H2O2. Prxs may have important roles in regulating the H2O2 concentration in ticks during blood feeding and oviposition. Moreover, Prxs are considered potential vaccine candidates in other parasites, such as Leishmania and Fasciola.

The Rickettsia Endosymbiont of Ixodes pacificus Contains All the Genes of De Novo Folate Biosynthesis.

Ticks and other arthropods often are hosts to nutrient providing bacterial endosymbionts, which contribute to their host's fitness by supplying nutrients such as vitamins and amino acids. It has been detected, in our lab, that Ixodes pacificus is host to Rickettsia species phylotype G021. This endosymbiont is predominantly present, and 100% maternally transmitted in I. pacificus. To study roles of phylotype G021 in I. pacificus, bioinformatic and molecular approaches were carried out. MUMmer genome alignments of whole genome sequence of I. scapularis, a close relative to I. pacificus, against

Repellent efficacy of DEET and KBR 3023 against Amblyomma hebraeum (Acari: Ixodidae).

The bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum Koch, is the principal vector of Rickettsia africae, the agent of African tick bite fever, in southern Africa. In contrast to most other hard ticks, members of the genus Amblyomma exhibit a characteristic attack host-seeking behavior. The efficacy of topically applied 20% lotions of DEET (diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), the currently considered reference repellent substance, and KBR 3023, a recently developed piperidine compound, was evaluated against laboratory-reared A. hebraeum nymphs on treated fingers. Both substances repelled >85% of nymph attacks at 0 and 1
