[Tuberculosis screening in school health services in Geneva, Switzerland].

Recent immigrantyouth have multiple health needs that need to be adapted to the context of migration. School health services provide a systematic health check to allyoung immigrants starting school in Geneva, including a tuberculin skin test if coming from a middle or high incidence country. Positive tests are confirmed with Interferon Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) and if indicated, offered treatment of latent tuberculosis even in the absence of clear guidelines. Collective and individual benefits outweigh the difficult logistics: reducing risk of reactivation of latent tuberculosis for populatio

Fevers of hot climates.

The febrile patient from the tropics is generally, but not invariably, suffering from an infection which need not necessarily be exotic although this possibility must be excluded. In acute infections malaria must always be considered, as its diagnosis and treatment are easy and effective. A positive diagnosis of an exotic infection can only be made if a history of long or short residence in a tropical or subtropical area is obtained. In most patients a diagnosis is readily established.

Control of infection and techniques of isolation in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The control of nosocomial infection in a pediatric intensive care unit is important not only because of the serious nature of the patient's condition, but also because of the greater staff-patient contact and inevitable crowding of patients, staff, and equipment. In order to control the spread of nosocomial infection, the modes of transmission and the principles of infection control must be understood. Each patient with an infectious disease must be considered to be a potential source of nosocomial disease, and measures of infection control must be individualized for the infectious disease and

Infectious diseases in pregnancy in Sri Lanka: gaps in surveillance, diagnosis, and policy: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases during pregnancy are often overlooked in the Global South. Country-level mapping of infectious diseases and their effects on pregnancy would provide possible intervention strategies for diagnosis, prevention, and management. This scoping review aims to map the evidence from 2000–2024 on pathogens, mortality, morbidity, and adverse outcomes caused by infectious diseases in pregnancy among pregnant women in Sri Lanka. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-ScR-based systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, EBSCO, and the Web of Science using key terms related to infectious di

The impact of behavioural risk factors on communicable diseases: a systematic review of reviews.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted that individuals with behavioural risk factors commonly associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as smoking, harmful alcohol use, obesity, and physical inactivity, are more likely to experience severe symptoms from COVID-19. These risk factors have been shown to increase the risk of NCDs, but less is known about their broader influence on communicable diseases. Taking a wide focus on a range of common communicable diseases, this review aimed to synthesise research examining the impact of behavioural risk factors comm

Bedaquiline in the multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment: Belarus experience.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Outcomes of treatment for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) remain poor worldwide. Among patients with MDR-TB in Belarus who started treatment in 2012, only 54% completed it successfully, with treatment failure reported in 22% of the patients; additionally, 11% died and 13% were lost to follow-up or remained unevaluated. In Belarus, to improve outcomes, bedaquiline was introduced in MDR-TB treatment in June 2015. The national TB program developed measures to monitor safety and effectiveness of bedaquiline-containing regimens in line with the World Health Organizat

Predictors of viral non-suppression among key populations in Lagos, Nigeria: a retrospective matched case-control study.

Despite advances in antiretroviral therapy, viral suppression rates remain suboptimal among key populations in Lagos, Nigeria. This study investigated sociodemographic and clinical predictors of viral non-suppression in these high-risk groups. A retrospective matched case-control study was conducted using clinical records and structured adherence interviews of 520 ART-experienced participants (260 virally unsuppressed cases matched 1:1 with 260 suppressed controls) across six clinics in Lagos. Bivariate analyses and multivariable conditional logistic regression identified predictors of non-sup

Bioprospecting endophytic fungi from Fusarium genus as sources of bioactive metabolites.

Endophytic fungi became an attractive source for the discovery of new leads, because of the complexity and the structural diversity of their secondary metabolites. The genus Fusarium comprising about 70 species is extremely variable in terms of genetics, biology, ecology, and consequently, secondary metabolism and have been isolated from countless plants genera from diverse habitats. These endophytic microbes may provide protection and survival strategies in their host plants with production of a repertoire of chemically diverse and structurally unprecedented secondary metabolites reported to

Integrated care of severe infectious diseases to people with substance use disorders; a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Various integrated care models have been used to improve treatment completion of medications for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV), Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), and Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among people with substance use disorders (SUD). We have conducted a systematic review to evaluate whether integrated models have impacts of the treatment of infectious diseases among marginalized people with SUD. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE/PubMed (1946 to 2018, on July 26, 2018) and Embase (from 1974 to 2018, on July 26, 2018) for randomized contr

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE HISTOGENESIS OF THE MILIARY TUBERCLE IN VITALLY STAINED RABBITS.

In our study of the histogenesis of the miliary tubercle developing inside the liver lobule in animals that have been stained vitally while inoculated with bovine tuberculosis, the controls enable us to recognize the manner in which the vital stain affects the liver. There is therefore no possibility of confusing the effects due to the organism with the effects due to the dye. It is, however, of interest to note that the effects are closely related. The vital stain alone is able to produce gradually some of the same changes that occur with far greater rapidity in experimental tuberculosis. Alt

The aetiology, clinical presentations and outcome of febrile encephalopathy in children in Papua New Guinea.

BACKGROUND: Febrile encephalopathy, defined as fever, seizures and/or altered consciousness, is a common presentation in children in tropical developing countries. Outcomes range from complete recovery through varying degrees of neurological disability which slowly resolve or remain permanent to death from either the acute illness or complications. Whilst bacterial meningitis accounts for a proportion of children affected, the aetiology in many remains unclear but includes malaria and probably viral encephalitis. AIM: To understand the aetiology, presentation and outcome of febrile encephalop

Incidence and risk factors of adverse drug reactions in multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) regimens containing new drugs: a retrospective study of two national multicenter cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of multidrug-resistant/rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (MDR/RR-TB) faces severe challenges, including prolonged courses, marked drug toxicity, and poor patient compliance. While regimens containing new drugs (bedaquiline, delamanid) have substantially improved MDR/RR-TB outcomes, systematic research on the epidemiological characteristics and risk control of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) remains insufficient. This study, based on a national multi-center clinical cohort, retrospectively analyzed data from 2,151 patients, aiming to explore the characteristics and risk fact
