Acute, vestibular symptoms in childhood are primarily caused by acute labyrinthitis (end organ dysfunction) or central nervous system diseases such as neoplasia involving the pons or cerebellar nuclei or infection manifested by pontine encephalitis. The evaluation, treatment, and prognosis of end organ versus central disease is so different that the ability to make a bedside, presumptive diagnosis provides an important advance. Both patients presented here had a central vestibulopathy. By paying particular attention to the character of the nystagmus and past pointing, the Romberg test, and the

Visual suppression of vestibulo-ocular reflexes (induced vestibular nystagmus) differs between normal subjects and patients with various neurological disorders. Abnormalities of VOR suppression were associated consistently with abnormalities of the visual and/or vesitibular oculomotor reflexes and in particular with abnormal smooth pursuit eye movements in the direction of abnormal suppression. Absent VOR suppression in a gaze position of, and in the same direction as, a spontaneous nystagmus was found exclusively in patients with spontaneous nystagmus of central nervous system origin. The spectrum of eye movement disorders in six patients with ataxia-telangiectasia at different stages of progression was assessed quantitatively by electrooculography. All patients demonstrated abnormalities of voluntary and involuntary saccades. The youngest and least involved patient had significantly increased reaction times of voluntary saccades, but normal accuracy and velocity. The other patients demonstrated increased reaction times and marked hypometria of horizontal and vertical voluntary saccades. Saccade velocity remained normal. Vestibular and optokinetic fast components (involunta

Objective: To explore the efficacy of short-term personalized vestibular rehabilitation supervised by special personnel (ST-PVR) versus fixed vestibular rehabilitation (FVR) on decompensated recurrent peripheral vertigo. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was carried out. Patients diagnosed with decompensated recurrent vertigo in the clinic of Eye & ENT Hospital, Fudan University from January to December 2018 were randomly allocated into FVR and ST-PVR groups via computer-generated randomization. The FVR group received fixed scheme involving gaze stabilization exercises, habituation exerci

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical, auditory, and vestibular characteristics of a nonsyndromic otovestibular dysfunction in a large Belgian family caused by a missense mutation of the DFNA9 gene: COCH.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of the clinical, audiologic, and vestibular data of 60 genetically affected cases.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: All members of a Belgian kindred who carry the genetic (P51S) defect linked to the inherited hearing and vestibular impairment.
INTERVENTIONS: Diagnostic otologic, audiometric, and vestibular analysis and imaging.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASU

BACKGROUND: High-frequency bone-conducted vibration (BCV) and skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) are widely used to probe vestibular function, yet their physical nature and physiological targets remain incompletely defined. In particular, the relationship between vibration physics and jerk, the time derivative of acceleration, and their relevance to vestibular activation has not been systematically explored.
OBJECTIVE: To develop an engineering-informed framework for high-frequency vestibular stimulation, linking jerk-rich transient stimuli to otolithic biomechanics and vestibular signa

Secondary autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is often bilateral and asymmetric in patients presenting with audiovestibular symptoms due to a systemic autoimmune disease. This systematic review and meta-analysis are aimed at identifying and highlighting patterns in prevalence of vestibular dysfunction, symptom presentation, and diagnostic methods in extant literature by combining clinical context from case reports with quantitative analyses from cohort studies. Screening of articles by title, abstract, and full text was completed by four reviewers (K.Z., A.L., S.C., and S.J.). In this study, w

BACKGROUND: Balance stabilization exercises are often prescribed to facilitate compensation in individuals with vestibular schwannoma (VS). However, both the assessment and prescription of these exercises are reliant on clinical observations and expert opinion rather than on quantitative evidence. The aim of this study was to quantify head motion kinematics in individuals with vestibular loss while they performed commonly prescribed balance stability exercises.
METHODS: Using inertial measurement units, head movements of individuals with vestibular schwannoma were measured before and after su

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Abnormal balance is poorly responsive to dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Decreased vestibular efficacy may contribute to imbalance in PD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between vestibular measures of dynamic posturography and imbalance in PD while accounting for confounder variables.
METHODS: 106 patients with PD underwent dynamic posturography for the 6 conditions of the sensory integration test (SOT) using the Neurocom Equitest device. All SOT measures, nigrostriatal dopaminergic denervation ((+)-[11C]DTBZ PET), brain

BACKGROUND: Recovery after fall-related hip fracture surgery in older adults is frequently complicated by persistent physical limitations, psychological distress, and an increased risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that sensory processing difficulties may influence functional performance, emotional well-being, and engagement in daily activities during the postoperative recovery period. However, the role of sensory processing patterns in shaping postoperative physical and psychological outcomes following hip fracture surgery remains insufficiently understood. AIM

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To identify clinical characteristics of pediatric superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) and explore suitable options of management.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
METHODS: The study comprised 10 patients with auditory and/or vestibular symptoms suspicious for SSCD. One patient pursued care at another institution, and two did not return for follow-up. Subsequently, seven patients (11 ears, 6 females and 1 male, aged 5-11 years) were included. Patients were evaluated using high-resolution temporal bone computed tomography. Those suspected of having SSCD unde

BACKGROUND/AIM: Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDIs) are an emerging public health problem and a realm of research for oral health enthusiasts. Certain populations can be more vulnerable to injuries such as those with a sensory deficit. Nevertheless, literature is scarce, especially for those with hearing impairment. Therefore, the aim of the study was to compare the prevalence and patterns of TDI in children and adolescents with severe-to profound hearing impairments and children without hearing impairments.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three hundred and ninety participants (195 severe to profound hear
