Among adolescents seen for psychiatric emergency consultation, the percentage of adolescents with autism is increasing over the years. This applies even more to girls than to boys. We collected data of 1378 adolescents aged 12-18 years who were seen for urgent consultation by mobile psychiatric emergency services in the Netherlands. Among these, there were 64 autistic girls and 125 autistic boys. We wanted to know more about differences in problems between autistic and typical developing adolescents in crisis, both to prevent crisis and to improve services. The percentage of adolescents with a

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Disease is the commonest monogenic haemoglobinopathy worldwide. Living with a long-term condition such as sickle cell disease during adolescence constitutes a significant challenge for the key stakeholders due to the combined effects of chronic illness and adolescent development. For adolescents with sickle cell disease to be cared for and supported appropriately and effectively, it is crucial that health professionals have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of how adolescents experience living with the condition. While there is developing literature about how …

PURPOSE: Adolescence marks a transition period in the development of gender experience and expression. Although there is growing awareness about various gender identities in health research, only limited data on the prevalence of adolescent gender variance in the general population exist.
METHODS: German female and male adolescents (n = 940) aged 10-16 years participating in the nationally representative "Health Behaviour in School-aged Children" Hamburg survey were asked to report their current gender experience (identification as both feminine and masculine) and gender expression (gender ro

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behaviours (SIB) are highly prevalent in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and have deleterious effects on the individual and their environment. The aim of this study was to examine SIB prevalence and associated features in a population of 152 adolescents with ASD and to determine risk factors for SIB.
METHODS: The present study uses a subset of data of a longitudinal follow-up of 152 children with ASD. The presence of a low or high level of self-injury was assessed at adolescence through the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist completed by parents. Clinical

Little information is available about the development of abdominal abscesses in adolescents with Crohn's disease. We report the clinical presentation of five adolescents with Crohn's disease who developed this complication. The mean time from diagnosis until development of an abdominal abscess was 1.7 years. The admitting diagnosis was an acute abdomen in two patients and recurrent Crohn's disease in the other three. No features of the clinical presentation or laboratory data distinguished this group from other adolescents with Crohn's disease. The use of ultrasound and CT scanning was helpful

This study examined the development of empathic care across three generations in a sample of 184 adolescents in the United States (99 female, 85 male; 58% White, 29% African American, 8% mixed race/ethnicity, 5% other groups), followed from their family of origin at age 13 into their parenting years (through their mid-30s). Mothers' empathic support toward adolescents at age 13 predicted teens' empathy for close friends across adolescence (13-19 years). Participants' empathic support for friends in late adolescence predicted more supportive parenting behavior in adulthood, which in turn was as

Attention to pubertal development and menstrual health is an important aspect of primary care for adolescents. Textbooks may not provide sufficient evidence-based guidance to facilitate the early detection of gynecologic disease states and conditions. Conversely, the typical guidelines for pubertal development may lead to over-evaluation of normal girls. Chaotically irregular and unpredictable bleeding is NOT the norm during adolescence. On the contrary, although many early menstrual cycles are anovulatory, most adolescents have menstrual cycles that fall within the parameters of 21-45 days. A

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and internet addiction (IA) are closely linked in adolescents, yet the neurobiological mechanisms underlying their relationship remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the role of abnormal functional connectivity (FC) between theta oscillation and the default mode network (DMN) in IA development among adolescent MDD patients.
METHODS: A total of 183 drug-naive first-episode adolescent MDD patients and 93 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. Clinical assessments were conducted using the HAMD-24, HAMA, and Young Internet Addiction Scale, with MDD

Acute pancreatitis (AP) in children is a rare but severe inflammatory disease of the pancreas. Unlike in adults, where alcohol consumption and gallstones are the most common causes, pediatric AP results from various factors such as abdominal trauma, infections, biliary tract disease, systemic disorders, genetic predisposition, and drug-induced injury, with many cases remaining idiopathic. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of pediatric scoliosis. Treatment options include physical therapy, bracing, and surgical correction in severe cases. BACKGROUND: Secure attachment has been associated with a lower incidence of depressive symptoms in adolescents. Adolescence is an important period for attachment development as it shapes future attachment patterns. This study adopts a social support perspective to explore the transition from parental attachment to peer attachment, and its impact on reducing depression.
METHODS: A sample of 7792 students from China, aged 11 to 19 years (mean = 15.19, SD = 2.564), completed three questionnaires: the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, the Social Support Scale, and the Self-Depression Scale

Growing literatures highlight shared childhood predictors for future borderline personality disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). However, few longitudinal studies have examined both BPD and MDD as simultaneous outcomes. Childhood personality traits and poor peer relationships constitute transdiagnostic phenomena that could impact risk for later BPD and MDD. The current study examined whether school-age peer relationships mediated associations between preschool Big Five traits and adolescent BPD and/or MDD. Preschool Big Five traits were assessed through observational coding. Sch

BACKGROUND: Seminoma is a rare type of germ cell tumor, especially in the central nervous system, and the reason for its development is unknown. Testicular calcifications are a precursor to testicular microlithiasis, which is a high-risk factor for testicular cancer (TC) in adolescent males, and seminoma is a common pathological type of TC.
CASE DESCRIPTION: This article reported an adolescent male who was admitted to the hospital due to headache and limb weakness, and the imaging showed that there was a mass at the basal ganglia of the thalamus, and after the brain biopsy was completed in th

BACKGROUND: Parentification is a relational process that leads to role confusion within a family system, where a parent imposes their roles on the child without the child's consent. Because the roles and responsibilities are placed on the child without their permission, this situation can be considered a form of emotional abuse. In the literature, the effects of parentification on self-esteem are still debated, with findings suggesting both positive and negative outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine whether parentification has a mediating role in the effect of emotional a

Prior studies suggest that adult supervised drinking in adolescence predicts greater adolescent alcohol misuse. Long-term follow up data examining how adult supervised drinking during adolescence relates to alcohol misuse in adulthood are lacking. Longitudinal data from the International Youth Development Study tested associations between adult supervised drinking during adolescence (ages 13-16; 2002-2004) and adult alcohol misuse (ages 25-31; 2014, 2018, 2020). Cross-nationally matched samples were compared in Washington State, USA (n = 961) and Victoria, Australia (n = 1,957; total N = 2,918

In accordance with the developmental origins of health and disease, early-life environmental exposures, such as maternal diet, can enhance the probability and gravity of health concerns in their offspring in the future. Over the past few years, compelling evidence has emerged suggesting that prenatal exposure to a maternal high-fat diet (HFD) could trigger neuropsychiatric disorders in the offspring, such as depression. The majority of brain development takes place before birth and during lactation. Nevertheless, our understanding of the impact of HFD on myelination in the offspring's brain du

Adolescent classical ballet dancers are nutritionally vulnerable, as they try to retain a lean body shape during a life period of high nutritional requirements due to rapid growth. Studies conducted on adult dancers have indicated a high risk for the development of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), but research on adolescent dancers remains scarce. The aim of the present case-control study was to compare the body composition, dietary habits, and DEBs of female adolescent classical ballet dancers and their non-dancer same-sex peers. Self-reported questionnaires, namely the Eating Attitudes Te

Shank3 is a shared risk gene for autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia. Sleep defects have been characterized for autism models with Shank3 mutations; however, evidence has been lacking for the potential sleep defects caused by Shank3 mutation associated with schizophrenia and how early in development these defects may occur. Here we characterized the sleep architecture of adolescent mice carrying a schizophrenia-linked, R1117X mutation in Shank3. We further employed GRABDA dopamine sensor and fiber photometry to record dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens during sleep/wake states.
