BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) may occur in patients with traumatic brain injury. Heterotopic ossification (HO) has frequently been observed in patients with PSH and has been found to impair patients' recoveries. However, the pathophysiology of HO in patients with PSH remains unelucidated. Vitamin D deficiency is a common abnormality among critically ill patients and may be associated not only with musculoskeletal complications, but also with high morbidity and mortality. The association between vitamin D deficiency and HO in patients with PSH has not yet been evaluated

Serum biomarkers have potential to help predict prognosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between serum acylcarnitine levels and functional outcomes at 1 month/6 months after injury for TBI patients with intracranial hemorrhage or diffuse axonal injury. This study is a multi-center prospective cohort study in which adult TBI patients with intracranial injury visiting the emergency departments (EDs) from December 2018 to June 2020 were enrolled. Serum acylcarnitine levels at the time of ED arrival were categorized into four groups: lo

BACKGROUND: Neonatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for identifying brain injuries, dysmaturation and understanding neurodevelopment in preterm infants. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between qualitative and quantitative neonatal brain MRI findings, alongside perinatal clinical variables, with neurodevelopmental outcomes across cognitive, language, and motor domains at 2 years' corrected age in preterm infants.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 50 very preterm infants (<32 weeks) who underwent brain MRI scans at term-equivalent age. MRI assessment included K

BACKGROUND: While electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for severe depression, there is a concern regarding its potential adverse effects on the brain. It is unclear whether a single ECT session (i.e., an electrically induced seizure) leads to physiological microstructural changes or causes lasting adverse biological effects.
METHODS: This study examined longitudinal changes in multishell diffusion MRI-derived metrics in 25 individuals with depression, with scans acquired 2 h before and after their first ECT session. Follow-up scans were collected within 14 days and

Individuals born preterm with very low birth weight (VLBW; birth weight ≤ 1500 g) are at high risk for perinatal brain injuries and deviant brain development, leading to increased chances of later cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems. Here we investigated the neuronal underpinnings of both reactive and proactive cognitive control processes in adults with VLBW. We included 32 adults born preterm with VLBW (before 37th week of gestation) and 32 term-born controls (birth weight ≥10th percentile for gestational age) between 22 and 24 years of age that have been followed prospectively sinc

UNLABELLED: We describe a child with dyslexia and difficulty in school who, at the age of 13 years, began to suffer from several head injuries resulting from falls of uncertain cause. Two years later, the patient developed symptoms of a severe mitochondrial disorder (involving bulbar-pyramidal paralysis, ophthalmoplegia, and hyperlactatemia) that coincided with VPA administration. Brain MR imaging revealed rapidly developing Leigh syndrome (LS), and muscle biopsy showed ragged blue fibres (RBF). A diminished expression of the E1α subunit of pyruvate dehydrogenase was found in muscle homogenate

The aim was to evaluate the changes in brain tissue oxygenation, assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), during transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) in patients with mild and moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI). Nineteen patients with diffuse, blunt, non-severe TBI (mean age 32.7 ± 11.4 years; 4 women and 15 men; Glasgow Coma Score before tACS 14.1 ± 0.5) were treated by 10 Hz in-phase tACS applied for 30 minutes to the left and right lateral prefrontal cortex at 21 days after TBI. Regional cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2) in the frontal lobes was measured simu

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious condition, potentially causing seizures and other lifelong disabilities. Patients who experience at least one seizure one week after TBI (late seizure) are at high risk for lifelong complications of TBI, such as post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). Identifying which TBI patients are at risk of developing seizures remains a challenge. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods that probe structural and functional alterations after TBI are promising for biomarker detection, physical deformations following moderate-severe TBI present problems for standar

Diffusion tensor imaging studies in children suggest a link between abnormal white matter in limbic-prefrontal circuitry and behavioral problems. However, in children with traumatic injury, links between atypical limbic-prefrontal circuitry and new behavioral problems remain largely unexamined. In a prospective longitudinal study of children ages 8-15 years, we examined white matter microstructure 7 weeks following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or extracranial injury (EI) relative to typically developing children (TDC). Internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems were assessed via the

INTRODUCTION: Concern surrounding short- and long-term consequences of participation in contact sports has become a significant public health topic. Previous literature utilizing diffusion tensor imaging in sports-related concussion has exhibited notable variety of analysis methods and analyzed regions of interest, and largely focuses on acute effects of concussion. The current study aimed to compare diffusivity metrics across a single season within athlete cohorts with no history of concussion.
METHODS: A prospective cohort of 75 contact and 79 non-contact division I athletes were compared a

BACKGROUND: The consequences of preterm birth are a major public health concern with high rates of ensuing multisystem morbidity, and uncertain biological mechanisms. Common genetic variation may mediate vulnerability to the insult of prematurity and provide opportunities to predict and modify risk.
OBJECTIVE: To gain novel biological and therapeutic insights from the integrated analysis of magnetic resonance imaging and genetic data, informed by prior knowledge.
METHODS: We apply our previously validated pathway-based statistical method and a novel network-based method to discover sources o

INTRODUCTION: Stroke-like migraine attacks after radiation therapy (SMART) syndrome has a characteristic clinical presentation and postcontrast T1WI MRI appearance. Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) may help distinguish SMART from other disorders that may have a similar postcontrast MRI appearance.
METHODS: The MRI examinations of four patients with SMART syndrome are described herein, each of which included SWI, FLAIR, DWI, and postcontrast T1WI on the presenting and follow-up MRI examinations.
RESULTS: In each, the initial SWI MRI demonstrated numerous susceptibility hypointensities <5

Previous studies have showed that the permeability of blood brain barrier (BBB) increased after hypoxia ischemia (HI). The current research uncovered the mechanism of altered BBB permeability after hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD) through AKT/GSK-3β/CREB signaling pathway in neonatal rats. Firstly, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining was used to assess brain injury. Initial findings showed abnormal signals in T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) and diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). Changes also happened in the morphology of nerve cells. Subsequently, we f

BACKGROUND: Pediatric brain tumor survivors are at an increased risk for white matter (WM) injury. However, damage to whole-brain structural connectivity is unelucidated. The impact of treatment on WM connectivity was investigated.
METHODS: Whole-brain WM networks were derived from diffusion tensor imaging data acquired for 28 irradiated patients (radiotherapy, RT) (mean age = 13.74 ± 3.32 years), 13 patients not irradiated (No RT) (mean age = 12.57 ± 2.87), and 41 typically developing children (TDC) (mean age = 13.32 ± 2.92 years). Differences in network properties were analyzed using robust

The anterior hippocampus (aHPC) has a central role in the regulation of anxiety-related behavior, stress response, emotional memory and fear. However, little is known about the presence and extent of aHPC abnormalities in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, we used a multimodal approach, along with graph-based measures of global brain connectivity (GBC) termed functional GBC with global signal regression (f-GBCr) and diffusion GBC (d-GBC), in combat-exposed US Veterans with and without PTSD. Seed-based aHPC anatomical connectivity analyses were also performed. A whole-brain vo

Opening of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and consequent edema are known to intensify 24-72 h after ischemic stroke, and research on potential ameliorative therapies in animal models may lead to improved clinical treatments to prevent brain swelling and the secondary damage it causes. In this study, post-ischemic hypothermia treatment, which is an established neuroprotective strategy, was examined for its ability to prevent delayed BBB opening in a rat model of global ischemia. Anesthetized, normothermic SD rats (340-380 g) underwent 20 min of two-vessel (carotid) occlusion plus hypotension (2V

Newly developed neurological complications are not confined to patients admitted to the neurology ICU but also occur in the medical ICU. In addition to patients with traumatic brain injuries, critically ill patients with sepsis, encephalopathy, and post-cardiopulmonary resuscitation are at risk of developing neurological complications. The situation can worsen when patients are sedated and intubated, which prevents the clinical manifestations to be presented. In this regard, non-convulsive seizures and status epilepticus, new onset strokes, and neuromuscular weakness syndromes could be missed

Risk factors of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) such as aging, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart failure, and traumatic brain injury can facilitate the appearance of cognitive decline and dementia by triggering cerebrovascular pathology and neuroinflammation. White matter (WM) microstructure and function are especially vulnerable to these conditions. Microstructural WM changes, assessed with diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging, can already be detected at preclinical stages of AD, and in the presence of the aforementioned risk factors. Particularly, the limbic system and cortico-cor

SIGNIFICANCE: Low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) ( < 0.1 Hz ) with respect to cerebral blood flow (CBF) have shown promise as an indicator of altered neurologic activity in the abnormal brain. Portable optical instruments have evolved to offer a noninvasive alternative for continuous CBF monitoring at the bedside compared with many large neuroimaging modalities. However, their utilization for acquiring LFOs of CBF has only been studied to a limited extent.
AIM: We aim to optimize an innovative speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (scDCT) system for the detection of LFOs within C
