Developing and assessing a pharmacy technician educational training program to improve access to over-the-counter hearing aids in rural communities.

BACKGROUND: Adults across rural regions of the United States lack access to hearing healthcare. Inadequate services for those with hearing loss further exacerbate the implications of hearing loss including social isolation, loneliness, and cognitive decline. OBJECTIVES: There were two primary objectives of this study. The first was to develop a pharmacy technician educational training program designed to support adults with hearing loss who live in rural communities, particularly with the use of Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids (OTC HAs). The second was to report the outcomes of focus group disc

New horizons in cooking and mealtime interventions for mild cognitive impairment and early dementia: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs) are increasingly common conditions that are highly disruptive to individuals and families. ADRDs impact cognition and can undermine a person's ability to participate in cooking, preparing meals, and engaging in conversations. Mealtime participation implicates key determinants of adequate nutritional intake and social connectedness. However, engaging in mealtime routines amid challenges can also exacerbate the stress and burden felt by family caregivers. Behavioral interventions can mitigate these downstream impacts, though they are

Beyond immersion: the cognitive mechanics of functional ludomusicology in esports performance.

In high-pressure esports, music is often treated as an immersion cue, yet converging evidence suggests it can also function as a cognitive ergogenic aid that modulates performance-relevant states through (i) arousal regulation, (ii) cognitive-load/attention allocation, and (iii) rhythmic entrainment. Quantitative syntheses from adjacent performance domains indicate that music produces small-to-moderate benefits in objective outcomes (e.g., a meta-analytic estimate of improved physical performance, g ≈ 0.31, and more positive affective valence, g ≈ 0.48). Evidence from sustained-attention parad

Motor Imagery Acquisition and Classification Using a Low-Cost 8-Channel EEG System in a VR ADHD Serious Game Environment: A Case Study.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) involves difficulties in sustaining attention and resisting distraction. This has motivated the development of feedback-driven environments for cognitive control training. Integrating electroencephalography (EEG) sensors into Virtual Reality (VR) serious games for cognitive therapy remains relatively underexplored and requires reliable, non-invasive brain-computer interfaces. The existing solutions use multi-channel systems that primarily suffer from requiring complex hardware, while not combining motor imagery (MI) with concentration levels. The

Sexual and Romantic Relationships in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Preliminary Report of an Italian Psychosexual Training Program.

The existing literature highlights the importance of psychosexual education for adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We developed a group training program on sexuality and affectivity, specifically designed for adolescents with ASD, with the aim of investigating changes in psychosexual functioning after the intervention and evaluating its clinical utility. The program, consisting of 10 sessions and conducted by two expert clinicians, was administered to three small groups (maximum six participants per group), for a total of 17 adolescents (aged 12-18) diagnosed with ASD without int

Mindfulness and rumination: stress pathways for caregivers of persons living with dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers of persons living with dementia face caregiving demands that heighten risk for anxiety, depressive symptoms, and perceived stress. Although caregiving distress is well documented, less is known about the cognitive processes that link anxiety to psychological distress, or whether mindfulness-based interventions affect these processes. This study examined rumination as a cognitive mediator linking anxiety with these outcomes and tested whether mindfulness training moderated this association. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using data from a randomized c

Machine learning and individual variability in electrical field characteristics predict tDCS treatment response for anxiety in older adults in the ACT trial.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety is highly prevalent in older adults and often co-occurs with neurodegenerative disorders, worsening cognitive decline and quality of life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has shown therapeutic potential, but outcomes remain inconsistent due to individual neurophysiological variability. METHOD: We trained machine learning (ML) models to predict state anxiety reduction following active tDCS paired with BrainHQ cognitive training (tDCS + CT) in older adults with moderate/severe baseline state anxiety symptoms from the Augmenting Cognitive Training in Older Ad…

Eight weeks of post-exercise local heating does not improve cognition and plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations.

Exercise and heat stress have been reported to independently provide benefits to brain health. We tested the hypothesis that 8 weeks of post-exercise local heating, passive local heating only, or exercise training only improves cognitive performance compared to a control group. Sixty young, healthy participants (n = 30 female, age: 23 [3] years) were randomised into one of four groups: control (CON), aerobic exercise (EX), local heating (HEAT), or combined heat and exercise (HEATEX). Participants completed supervised sessions three times per week for 8 weeks. Exercise sessions were completed a

Treatment Considerations for Compulsive Exercise in High-Performance Athletes with an Eating Disorder.

Compulsive exercise is linked with poorer treatment outcomes in people with eating disorder (EDs). High-performance athletes represent a growing and complex subcomponent of the broader ED population, and emergent evidence indicates that different conceptualisations of compulsive exercise are needed in this population. Existing randomised controlled trials in ED populations have demonstrated small treatment effects on compulsive exercise compared with control groups; however, athletes were sparsely sampled across these studies. Thus, the extent to which current treatments for compulsive exercis

Mindfulness-based focused attention training versus progressive muscle relaxation in remitted depressed patients: Effects on salivary cortisol and associations with subjective improvements in daily life.

Major Depression is a stress-related disorder characterized by altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function. Mindfulness-based interventions have shown to improve subjective parameters of stress and to reduce relapse rates in depressed patients. However, research on their effects on diurnal patterns of cortisol and associations with subjective outcomes is lacking. The present Ambulatory Assessment study investigated possible changes in daily rhythm cortisol parameters (cortisol awakening response (CAR), daily slope, total cortisol) in currently remitted individuals with recurrent depre

Treatment of negative symptoms: Where do we stand, and where do we go?

Negative symptoms, e.g. social withdrawal, reduced initiative, anhedonia and affective flattening, are notoriously difficult to treat. In this review, we take stock of recent research into treatment of negative symptoms by summarizing psychosocial as well as pharmacological and other biological treatment strategies. Major psychosocial approaches concern social skills training, cognitive behavior therapy for psychosis, cognitive remediation and family intervention. Some positive findings have been reported, with the most robust improvements observed for social skills training. Although cognitiv

The effect of clinical application of transcranial direct current stimulation combined with non-immersive virtual reality rehabilitation in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: The ability to manipulate the upper limbs and fingers of stroke patients is very important for independent daily life. Among the latest approaches for upper limb rehabilitation training, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive stimulation method that stimulates the cranial nerves by attaching electrodes to the scalp. In addition, virtual reality (VR) is an intervention method that provides an environment similar to reality and can help restore function by performing body movements as if playing a game. In addition, VR is an intervention method that provides

Effect of tacrolimus (FK506) on ischemia-induced brain damage and memory dysfunction in rats.

The behavioral and neurohistological protective effects of tacrolimus (FK506) were examined in rats subjected to 15-min global forebrain ischemia. Learning and memory performance were evaluated in an aversive, non-food-motivated, eight-arm radial maze. In one experiment, naive rats were rendered ischemic, and 15 days later they were tested for acquisition of a spatial task (postoperative training). In a complementary experiment, rats were trained for 8 days and then subjected to ischemia (preoperative training); 15 days later (on Day 24 of testing) they were retested for retention of cognition

One Size Does Not Fit All: Choosing Practical Cognitive Screening Tools for Your Practice.

Every year, millions of patients worldwide undergo cognitive testing. Unfortunately, new barriers to the use of free open access cognitive screening tools have arisen over time, making accessibility of tools unstable. This article is in follow-up to an editorial discussing alternative cognitive screening tools for those who cannot afford the costs of the Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (see www.dementiascreen.ca). The current article outlines an emerging disruptive "free-to-fee" cycle where free open access cognitive screening tools are integrated into clinical

Progesterone levels predict reductions in behavioral avoidance following cognitive restructuring in women with spider phobia.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hormones have been implicated as a potential source of variability in the effectiveness of exposure therapy for anxiety disorders in women. Additionally, preclinical studies in healthy women indicate that ovarian hormones are related to cognitive modes of emotion regulation, like cognitive restructuring. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether a relationship exists between endogenous ovarian hormones and the outcomes of cognitive restructuring in clinically anxious women. METHODS: Ninety women with spider phobia received training in cognitive restructurin

Computerized Training in Poststroke Aphasia: What About the Long-Term Effects? A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Poststroke aphasia is a very disabling disorder, which may affect speech expression, comprehension, and reading or writing. Treatment of aphasia should be initiated as soon as possible after the brain injury; however, the improvement of language functions can occur also in the chronic phase. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (17 patients) treated with computerized rehabilitation training (Power-Afa, Maddaloni, Campania, Italy) or a control group (15 patients), submitted to conventional speech therapy.
