A double-blind, paired comparison study was used to evaluate treatment effects of 12% ammonium lactate lotion (Lac-Hydrin) against its vehicle on seborrheic keratoses. Fifty-eight volunteer patients, 37 to 82 years of age, were studied for 16 weeks. The patients had a minimum of two seborrheic keratoses at least 10 cm apart. They applied the medication twice daily. Cell proliferation kinetic values were established for the hair root matrix of primary anagen follicles of 14 Beagles and 4 Cocker Spaniels with healthy skin and 9 Cocker Spaniels with primary idiopathic seborrhea. Lesions of seborrheic keratoses were studied by scanning electrom microscopy. Numerous yeasts were present on the karatinized cells and hairs associated with the lesions. Surfaces of some yeasts were smooth and others were ruffled. The ruffles suggested the presence of a glycocalyx. The yeasts exhibited the morphological features of Pityrosporum ovale.

A case of adenocarcinoma of the bile duct complicating longstanding ulcerative colitis and associated with the rapid onset and growth of multiple seborrheic keratosis (Leser-Trelat sign) and pure red blood cell aplasia is described. This is the first report of a case of the coexistence of the Leser-Trelat sign and pure red blood cell aplasia in a patient with a malignancy. Both manifestations have been doubted as truly paraneoplastic manifestations because of their rarity in clinical medicine. Their co-existence in the present case would support their associaton with malignancy.

An analysis of the clinical and pathologic characteristics of 12 Nigerian patients with epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is presented. Two morphological variants have been observed, typical wart-like flat-topped papules and larger confluent plaques. Seborrhoeic keratoses were observed in patients with the second morphological variety of EV. Solar elastosis was found in biopsies taken from EV lesions in this subgroup of patients. The paper refers to 167 patients who were treated with 2 mg Cyproteronacetate and 50 mug Ethinyloestradiol because of acne, seborrhoea, hirsutism and androgenetic alopecia. The application was daily from the 5th to the 25th day of cycle over a period of 12 months. The success of treatment depended on the severity of virilisation: in cases of light acne only 77% of the patients showed improvement, while in cases of severe acne 91,4% showed improvement or healing of acne.
