The role of legal system quality in carbon inequality: Mixed evidence from middle-income economies.

Addressing the challenge of unequal contributions to global carbon emissions is central to advancing sustainable development. This study examines how globalisation, economic growth, and the quality of legal systems influence CO2 emissions inequality across 78 middle-income economies, utilising balanced panel data from 2000 to 2019. To provide further nuance, this analysis also distinguishes between 39 lower-middle-income and 39 upper-middle-income countries. Employing Driscoll-Kraay Standard Errors and Feasible Generalised Least Squares estimation techniques, the results reveal that globalisat

Female authorship in global research: a bibliometric study of high- and low-income country collaborations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine female authorship in research from collaborations between high-income countries (HICs) and lower-middle-income and low-income countries (LMICs/LICs) across two time periods: 2018-2020 and 2021-2023. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis of neurosurgical research articles from the Scopus database, published between 2018 and 2023, was performed to investigate collaboration trends between HICs and LMICs/LICs. Only neurosurgical publications were included, and female authors were identified based on names traditionally associated with female gender ident

Tracing global inequities in radiology research: a multi-level analysis of research output.

BACKGROUND: Authorship disparities in medical research are evident, particularly between high-income countries (HICs) and low- and middle-income countries (LICs/LMICs). These disparities have been analyzed in recent publications in Pediatric Radiology journal, noting that between 2019 and 2022, no manuscripts from LICs and only 13 manuscripts from LMICs were published. To our knowledge, an extensive review of publication trends in Pediatric Radiology journal and in radiology word containing journals, with regard to LICs/LMICs disparities, is currently lacking. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to

Applying current European periodontitis clinical practice guidelines is not feasible even for the richest countries in the world.

Clinical practice guidelines aim to enhance the quality, equality and consistency of care but often demand more time than is available, rendering adherence impractical and exceeding feasible resources. The 2017 introduction of a new periodontal classification system by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) sought to refine clinical and epidemiological practices by serving as the basis for clinical practice guidelines and epidemiological investigations around the world. Following this classification, the EFP recommends supportive period

Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection Burden and Epidemiologic Risk Factors in Countries With Universal Screening: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is the most common congenital infection and the leading acquired cause of developmental disabilities and sensorineural deafness, yet a reliable assessment of the infection burden is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the birth prevalence of cCMV in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs), characterize the rate by screening methods, and delineate associated risk factors of the infection. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews databases were searched from January 1

Hepatitis E virus infection.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a worldwide disease. An improved understanding of the natural history of HEV infection has been achieved within the last decade. Several reservoirs and transmission modes have been identified. Hepatitis E is an underdiagnosed disease, in part due to the use of serological assays with low sensitivity. However, diagnostic tools, including nucleic acid-based tests, have been improved. The epidemiology and clinical features of hepatitis E differ between developing and developed countries. HEV infection is usually an acute self-limiting disease, but in developed

Transmission of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. It is accepted as the major cause of chronic gastrit … high prevalence regions. This is likely related to inferior hygienic conditions and sanitation. In developing countries, infection occurs at a much earlier age. In developed countries, the prevalence of infection is related to poor socioeconomic conditions, particularly density of living. Humans seem to be the only reservoir of H pylori, which spread from person to p …

Epidemiology of cataract in childhood: a global perspective.

Cataract is the most important cause of treatable childhood blindness. There are an estimated 200,000 children blind from cataract worldwide; 20,000 to 40,000 children with developmental bilateral cataract are born each year. Rubella is still an important cause of preventable disease in many countries. In the developing world, there is a need to improve early case detection and referral services and to establish centers with expertise in the assessment, surgical treatment, and long-term management of the child with cataract.

Behaviour change interventions for the control and elimination of schistosomiasis: A systematic review of evidence from low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: For the last two decades, schistosomiasis control efforts have focussed on preventive treatment. The disease, however, still affects over 200 million people worldwide. Behaviour change (BC) interventions can strengthen control by interrupting transmission through modifying exposure behaviour (water contact) or transmission practices (open urination/defaecation); or through fostering treatment seeking or acceptance. This review examines these interventions to assess their effectiveness in modifying risk practices and affecting epidemiological trends. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:

Incidence and Cost of Otitis Media in High-income and Low- and Middle-income Countries.

BACKGROUND: The estimated global incidence of acute otitis media (AOM) is >700 million episodes per year, with direct costs of billions of United States Dollars. This economic burden warrants continued investment in vaccine development against otopathogens. To aid in these decisions, an updated estimate of the incidence and costs of AOM and common sequelae is provided. METHODS: A structured search using PubMed and Google Scholar that included English-language articles published from January 2000 to April 2024 was conducted using keywords and Boolean operators. Costs were adjusted to 2025 Unit

A Review of Scabies: An Infestation More than Skin Deep.

Human scabies, a common infestation, has a worldwide distribution with a variable impact and presentation depending on the clinical situation. In developed, high-income settings, health institution and residential home outbreaks challenge health and social care services. In resource-poor settings, it is the downstream sequelae of staphylococcal and streptococcal bacteraemia, induced by scratching, which have a significant impact on the long-term health of communities. Over the past decade scabies has been recognised as a "neglected tropical disease" (NTD) by the World Health Organisation, has

The Global Health Dimensions of Asbestos and Asbestos-Related Diseases.

The Collegium Ramazzini (CR) reaffirms its long-standing position that responsible public health action is to ban all extraction and use of asbestos, including chrysotile. This current statement updates earlier statements by the CR with a focus on global health dimensions of asbestos and asbestos-related diseases (ARDs). The ARD epidemic will likely not peak for at least a decade in most industrialized countries and for several decades in industrializing countries. Asbestos and ARDs will continue to present challenges in the arena of occupational medicine and public health, as well as in clini

Burden of disease from cryptosporidiosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The global significance of cryptosporidiosis is widespread and far-reaching. In this review, we present recent data about strain diversity and the burden of disease, along with developments in therapeutic and preventive strategies. RECENT FINDINGS: Cryptosporidium is an emerging pathogen that disproportionately affects children in developing countries and immunocompromised individuals. Without a diagnostic tool amenable for use in developing countries, the burden of infection and its relationship to growth faltering, malnutrition, and diarrheal mortality remain underappreci…

The socioeconomic determinants of cancer.

This paper provides a synthesis on socioeconomic inequalities in cancer incidence, mortality and survival across countries and within countries, with particular focus on the Italian context; the paper also describes the underlying mechanisms documented for cancer incidence, and reports some remarks on policies to tackle inequalities. From a worldwide perspective, the burden of cancer appears to be particularly increasing in developing countries, where many cancers with a poor prognosis (liver, stomach and oesophagus) are much more common than in richer countries. As in the case of incidence and…

The epidemiology of preterm labour--why have advances not equated to reduced incidence?

The major burden of preterm birth is in the developing world, where most of the increasing death and morbidity is secondary to infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, bacterial vaginosis and intestinal parasites. In some developing countries, the growth of medical care has outstripped the growth of preventive public health, with an associated increase in iatrogenic preterm births. In developed countries, more than one-third of preterm births are medically indicated because of conditions such as fulminating pre-eclampsia or severe intrauterine growth restriction. Neither of thes…
