Predicting myxomatosis distribution in Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) through active surveillance.

Spatial epidemiology is key to follow the distribution and evolution of emerging pathogens. During outbreak investigations, information is initially obtained via passive surveillance and later complemented with data from active surveillance for a comprehensive picture of disease distribution. In 2018, a recombinant myxoma virus (ha-MYXV) emerged in Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis), significantly impacting their populations. Here, we use information generated by active surveillance, validating it with passive surveillance results (454 municipalities with confirmed cases), to predict the curren

Epidemiology of skin cancer based on Japan's National Cancer Registry 2016-2017.

Skin cancer is most frequently diagnosed in the White population. However, its subtypes and epidemiology in Japan are understudied. We aimed to elucidate skin cancer incidence in Japan based on the National Cancer Registry, a new nationwide integrated population-based registry. Data from patients diagnosed with skin cancer in 2016 and 2017 were extracted and classified by cancer subtypes. Data were analyzed using the World Health Organization and General Rules tumor classifications. Tumor incidence was calculated as the number of new cases divided by the corresponding total person-years. Overa

Global preterm births attributable to BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) exposure.

Epidemiological studies have shown that long-term exposure to toxic volatile organic compounds, such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), is associated with preterm births (PTB). However, global PTB attributable to long-term BTEX exposure has not been reported in the literature yet. In this study, we employed a global chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem (Goddard Earth Observing System coupled with chemistry), in conjunction with an epidemiological model, to quantify the global country-specific PTB associated with long-term BTEX exposure at the horizontal resolution of 1 km × 1

A SEIR model with memory effects for the propagation of Ebola-like infections and its dynamically consistent approximation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We present and analyze a nonstandard numerical method to solve an epidemic model with memory that describes the propagation of Ebola-type diseases. The epidemiological system contemplates the presence of sub-populations of susceptible, exposed, infected and recovered individuals, along with nonlinear interactions between the members of those sub-populations. The system possesses disease-free and endemic equilibrium points, whose stability is studied rigorously. METHODS: To solve the epidemic model with memory, a nonstandard approach based on Grünwald-Letnikov differe

Evidence synthesis and decision modelling to support complex decisions: stockpiling neuraminidase inhibitors for pandemic influenza usage.

Objectives: The stockpiling of neuraminidase inhibitor (NAI) antivirals as a defence against pandemic influenza is a significant public health policy decision that must be made despite a lack of conclusive evidence from randomised controlled trials regarding the effectiveness of NAIs on important clinical end points such as mortality. The objective of this study was to determine whether NAIs should be stockpiled for treatment of pandemic influenza on the basis of current evidence. Methods: A decision model for stockpiling was designed. Data on previous pandemic influenza epidemiology was combi

Modelling the impact of temperature-induced life history plasticity and mate limitation on the epidemic potential of a marine ectoparasite.

Temperature is hypothesized to contribute to increased pathogenicity and virulence of many marine diseases. The sea louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is an ectoparasite of salmonids that exhibits strong life-history plasticity in response to temperature; however, the effect of temperature on the epidemiology of this parasite has not been rigorously examined. We used matrix population modelling to examine the influence of temperature on demographic parameters of sea lice parasitizing farmed salmon. Demographically-stochastic population projection matrices were created using parameters from the ex

Development of a nomogram for identification of asthma among adults in epidemiologic studies.

BACKGROUND: The criteria used to identify persons with asthma in epidemiologic studies are varying and, depending on the method used, can be challenging and resource consuming. OBJECTIVE: To develop a nomogram (scoring system) to identify adult patients with asthma using a combination of variables collected via a validated questionnaire. METHODS: We studied the first 268 women aged 40 to 69 years in the Shanghai Women's Asthma and Allergy Study who reported signs and symptoms of asthma and underwent either methacholine challenge testing or test of reversibility during the asthma screening su

Development of an empirically calibrated model of gastric cancer in two high-risk countries.

Although epidemiologic studies have established the relationship between Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer and promising results that H. pylori treatment can reduce cancer incidence among individuals without preexisting precancerous lesions, there is no consensus on whether screening for H. pylori should be conducted. Our objective was to synthesize the available data to develop and empirically calibrate a mathematical model of gastric cancer and H. pylori in China and Colombia that could be used to provide qualitative insight into the benefits and cost-effectiveness of primary and second

Ecological niche modeling of Coccidioides spp. in western North American deserts.

Coccidioidomycosis is an endemic infectious disease in western North American deserts caused by the dimorphic ascomycete Coccidioides spp. Even though there has been an increase in the number of reported cases in the last years, few positive isolations have been obtained from soil samples in endemic areas for the disease. This low correlation between epidemiological and environmental data prompted us to better characterize the fundamental ecological niche of this important fungal pathogen. By using a combination of environmental variables and geospatially referenced points, where positive isol

A Predict → Confirm → Act Framework for AI-Augmented MDRO Control Across Hospitals and Long-Term Care Facilities.

Multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) control depends on identifying colonized patients and emerging transmission events early enough to intervene, without overwhelming infection prevention and control (IPC) teams or unnecessarily isolating patients. Predictive models using electronic health records, microbiology data, patient movement, and genomic information may support this task. We propose a practical Predict → Confirm → Act framework for artificial intelligence (AI)-augmented infection control across hospitals and long-term care facilities. In this framework, AI generates risk signals; micr

Gradient boosting machine for survival prediction in studies with general failure-time outcome-dependent sampling design.

Outcome-dependent sampling (ODS) designs are widely used in epidemiological and biomedical research as cost-effective alternatives to full cohort studies. While existing research has focused on parameter estimation and inference under specific models, survival prediction in ODS settings remains underexplored. In this paper, we propose a gradient boosting machine tailored for survival prediction in studies conducted using general failure-time ODS designs. Our approach integrates a weighting scheme to correct for sampling bias and improves predictive accuracy. We introduce a weighted empirical r

Computational simulation of intervention targets: elucidating coping style mechanisms in anxiety and depressive symptom networks in community populations.

BACKGROUND: Depressive and anxiety disorders represent globally significant mental health burdens, imposing substantial impacts on individuals, societies, and healthcare infrastructure. In China, nationally representative epidemiological studies report a lifetime prevalence of 7.6% for anxiety disorders and 6.6% for depressive disorders. Both conditions demonstrate age-dependent heterogeneity, with older populations exhibiting significantly higher susceptibility and elevated comorbidity. METHODS: The cross-sectional study of community populations constructed Ising network models for different

The dual role of leukotrienes in the tumor microenvironment: balancing pro-tumorigenic and anti-tumor immunity.

BACKGROUND: Leukotrienes are bioactive lipid mediators produced via the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway and are essential for inflammatory signaling in the tumor microenvironment (TME), playing roles in angiogenesis, immune modulation and metastatic progression. OBJECTIVE: This review evaluates the role of leukotriene signaling in cancer progression and highlights biomarker-guided therapeutic strategies targeting these pathways in the TME. METHODS: A narrative review of preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological studies was performed, with prespecified inclusion criteria and prioritization of

The Human Microbiome in Airborne Particulate Matter-Associated Aging-Related Chronic Diseases: An Evidence-Stratified Review.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) exposure is increasingly recognized for its profound impact on human health. Emerging evidence highlights the human microbiome as a plausible intermediary between environmental exposures and host physiological responses. While current research largely focuses on PM's direct toxicological effects, the role of microbiome disruption in mediating aging-related chronic diseases remains underexplored. This review integrates epidemiological data, animal models, and multiomics approaches to examine the impact of PM exposure on microbial communities across the respirato

Early life stress and the pathogenesis of visceral hypersensitivity: mechanisms and implications for disorders of gut-brain interaction.

Early life stress (ELS) is a major risk factor for disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs), particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), through the induction of persistent visceral hypersensitivity. This review synthesizes evidence from epidemiological studies, clinical observations, and preclinical models to establish ELS-induced visceral hypersensitivity as a core pathophysiological axis. I delineate the multi-level mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, encompassing: (1) central neuroendocrine dysregulation (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, corticotropin-releasing factor signaling)

Prevention of myopia in a near-primate by supplemental indigo light suggests a hypothesis for the myopia boom.

Today, about 2.8 billion people worldwide suffer from myopia (nearsightedness), and projections place the 2050 burden at 4.8 billion people (the "myopia boom"). Myopia results from abnormal elongation of the eye, which causes images to focus in front of the retina. Building on prior work in mouse models assessing the non-visual opsin OPN5, we test the hypothesis that insufficient exposure to short-wavelength light increases myopia susceptibility. We use the tree shrew, a near-primate model for human myopia. Our findings show that indigo light in the range of 419-446 nm, when used to supplement

HDL metabolism and function in diabetes mellitus.

Epidemiological studies have identified an inverse association of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol with cardiovascular risk. Preclinical studies have shown that HDLs also exhibit cardioprotective functions in cultured cells and animal models. However, large, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials of HDL-raising agents have failed to reduce cardiovascular events in humans. Despite this negative outcome, glycaemic control was considerably improved in the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were recruited into these trials. This finding indicated that HDLs might have anti

Sex differences in hepatic encephalopathy: addressing the knowledge gap.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a brain dysfunction caused by liver insufficiency and/or portal-systemic shunting with a significant impact on patients' quality of life and healthcare systems. This narrative review was elaborated by the Special Interest Group (SIG) "Gender in Hepatology" of the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) and addresses the underexplored area of sex differences in HE, examining epidemiological trends, clinical manifestations and potential underlying mechanisms. Current evidence suggests that men and women may experience different prevalence rates, risk

Staphylococcus aureus LukMF' targets neutrophils to promote skin and soft tissue infection.

Pathogens have evolved to be highly adapted to their natural host. Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus USA300, for instance, is a lineage responsible for the epidemic of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in humans. Owing to its human tropism, mechanisms that enabled the rise of USA300 as a major skin pathogen remain incompletely defined. By leveraging a rodent-adapted strain of S. aureus, we developed a natural model of SSTIs. We found that LukMF', a pore-forming leukocidin homolog to the human-specific LukSF-PV toxin, drives skin pathology in mice. LukMF' ly
