OBJECTIVE: The endoscopic approach can be successfully employed for the treatment of benign tumors such as fibroosseus and vascular lesions, pleomorphic adenomas, gliomas, and schwannomas.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Nineteen patients diagnosed with benign tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses and treated using an endoscopic approach were retrospectively reviewed. The endoscopic approach was used exclusively in 15 cases and was associated with an external approach in 4 cases (due to an intracranial extension of the tumor in 3 patients and its location at the level of the anterior wal

This paper reports 29 cases of space-occupying lesions in the nasal cavities and the paranasal sinuses. Of them, 12 were benign and 17 malignant. They were all surgically treated, 17 by lateral rhinotomy, 6 by combined cranio-nasal approaches, 3 by maxillectomy and evisceration of the orbit, 1 by transfrontal and 1 by midfacial degloving approaches, respectively. The regional chemotherapy was administered to a case via external carotid artery after neck dissection. Among these cases, 18 of the skull defects were rehabilitated. The repairing materials included the autologous perpendicular plate

Symptomatic maxillary sinus cysts are diagnosed less frequently than similar cysts of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses and are rarely reported in the ophthalmic literature. Patients with cysts of the maxillary sinus may present to the ophthalmologist with proptosis, enophthalmos, diplopia, ptosis, epiphora, and, rarely, decreased visual acuity. Four patients with maxillary sinus mucoceles are presented; one of these patients had a concurrent retention cyst in the orbit. Clinical history, radiologic findings, and histopathologic mechanisms are discussed. Mucocele is a recognized complication o

The therapy records of 66 patients with carcinomas of the paranasal sinuses were reviewed; primary carcinomas occurred in the maxillary sinus in 50 patients, the ethmoid sinus in 11 patients, the sphenoid sinus in 4 patients and the frontal sinus in 1 patient. The tumors of the maxillary sinus were staged retrospectively according to the American Joint Committee staging system recommended in 1976; 1 of 2 patients with T1, 5 of 11 patients with T2, 10 of 34 patients with T3 and 1 of 3 patients with T4 lesions showed no evidence of disease (NED) at 3 years. Combined high dose irradiation (6,000

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RM) is a rare and severe condition caused by filamentous fungi, characterized by infection of the nose, paranasal sinuses, and brain. It is the most common and fatal clinical form of mucormycosis, accounting for 50 % of reported cases. RM is seldom reported during the postpartum period. This case report presents a rare instance of RM following childbirth and reviews the most recent literature, highlighting the limited cases documented globally and even fewer within Africa. The aim is to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and pr

A 57-year-old man who suffered from a headache for 1 year, accompanied by blurred vision for 7 months and numbness in his left face for 1 week was admitted to the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University on May 7, 2022. One year ago, the patient had no obvious precipitating factor of paroxysmal stabbing pain in the whole skull with dizziness, which could be relieved by oneself after lasting for 1-2 min each time, with about 20 episodes per day. The cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed changes in bilateral frontal lobe ischemic foci, bilateral frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid and maxill

BACKGROUND: Balloon sinuplasty (BSP) has become a common, minimally invasive treatment for chronic sinusitis. Like any surgical procedure, there are definite risks when using it as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with other revision procedures.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the adverse events of BSP using the openFDA cloud with regard to malfunction and injury following surgery.
METHODS: Between January 2015 and December 2018, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) openFDA database was queried for adverse event use. Reports were further categorized by procedure location, injury type, dev

An otherwise healthy two-month-old female C57BL/6J mouse presented with a left-sided head tilt. Differential diagnoses included idiopathic necrotizing arteritis, bacterial otitis media/interna (Pasteurella pneumotropica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus sp., Mycoplasma pulmonis and Burkholderia gladioli), encephalitis, an abscess, neoplasia, a congenital malformation and an accidental or iatrogenic head trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large space-occupying right olfactory lobe intra-axial lesion with severe secondary left-sided subfalcine herniation. Following imaging,

INTRODUCTION: Sinus pericranii (SP) is a rare vascular malformation characterized by abnormal communication between the intracranial and extracranial venous systems [1]. Sinus pericranii is most commonly seen in the distribution areas of the superior sagittal and transverse sinuses [2]. There are no uniform criteria for the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnostic criteria, treatment options, or prognosis of sinus pericranii [3].
CASE DESCRIPTION: In this paper, we present the diagnosis and treatment of a child admitted to our neurosurgery department in 2019 with rapidly growing frontal sinus peric

Total aplasia of paranasal sinus (TAPS) is extremely rare, although the fact that partial aplasia is very common. TAPS seems to be limited to only 5 case reports in the literature until now. We present the case of a 29-year-old patient who has a syndromic face appearance but whose TAPS was detected incidentally. The maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses were totally aplastic. Furthermore, clinodactyly and high-arched palate were observed. The patient's appearance was consistent with a syndromic face because of some findings on inspection such as hypertelorism, shortening of the pal

BACKGROUND: Penetrating intraorbital foreign body (IOFB) is usually associated with high-velocity trauma forces around the eye. IOFB injury to globe or optic nerve is considered a surgical emergency; an immediate diagnosis and management plan is generally indicated.
METHODS: A case report (design). The patient was a 78-year-old male presented with diminution of vision of the right eye following a high-velocity injury. The patient was noted to have a closed globe injury with associated retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage. An initial orbital CT scan did not reveal any IOFB, despite

Frontal sinuses (FSs) have been studied in radiology, anthropology, and forensic anthropology. This study aimed to determine whether it was possible to predict the age and sex of an individual using FS volume. Sixty-nine anonymized CT scans were imported to MIMICS 10.01(®) software (Materialise N.V.), and each FS volume was calculated in mm(3) . There was an absence of significant difference between right and left FS volume (p = 0.173) and an absence of correlation between age and FS volume (Pearson's test; p = 0.705). Sexual dimorphism was significantly different (p = 0.001). However, the mos

Sinonasal neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) are rare tumors. We present a rare case of intracranial invasion of sinonasal small-cell NEC. A 61-year-old woman with nasal obstruction and bleeding was referred to our hospital. Computed tomography showed a polyp-like tumor occupying her left nasal cavity and extending to the paranasal sinuses and anterior cranial fossa. The tumor was removed using a transfacial approach by otolaryngologists and a bifrontal cranial approach by neurosurgeons. In histopathological analyses, we found that the tumor presented with both an epithelial and neuroendocrine n

AIM: To report a typical case operated on under endonasal endoscopic surgery.
CASE REPORT: A 20 year old girl came to the clinic with a left eye exophtalmus. Nasal endoscopy revealed a tumour developped into the left nasal fossa. Imaging allowed to suspect an ethmoidal aneurysmal cyst. CT showed a large tumour involving the left ethmoid, extending into the frontal and maxillary sinuses, with a fluid level in the middle of the tumour. MRI eliminated intracranial extension, showed a cystic component in the middle of the tumour and the presence of hemosiderin signals on T2. Complete resection of

Frontobasal injuries and some other diseases of frontal sinuses sometimes require radical surgery with the obliteration of the sinus. A cosmetic correction of the forehead and supraorbital arches has to be performed after such a procedure. Nowadays, there is a wide choice of alloplastic materials on the market. We tried polymethyl methacrylate implants in correction of the exterior appearance of the forehead and supraorbital arches and followed the behaviour of the implants up to 25 years after surgery. The result was 18 (94.7%) successful implantations and one failure (5.3%) with a mild saggi

Leakage of cerebrospinal fluid may occur after fracture of the skull base or after surgery on the skull base, nose, or paranasal sinuses. Further causes of cerebrospinal fluid leakage are tumours and malformations. It may also occur spontaneously. We describe four case reports illustrating diagnostic and surgical problems. Cerebrospinal fluid oto- and rhinorrhoea should be suspected in cases of recurring purulent meningitis. Immunologic demonstration of beta(2)-transferrin in secretions from the nose and ear is a diagnostic sign of cerebrospinal fluid or perilymph. Digital subtraction cisterno

Cranio-metaphyseal dysplasia in two brothers, aged fourteen and twelve, is reported. Both brothers presented with deafness, repeated episodes of cold and cough and mouth breathing. Striking craniofacial configuration consisted of hypertelorism, prominent glabella and zygomatic arches, mandibular prognathism and overgrowth of middle third of face. Both patients had genu valgum deformity. Low intelligence and poor scholastic performance present in both brothers were attributed to deafness. Radiographic features consisted of obtuse mandibular angle, defective dentition, sclerotic frontal sinuses,
