Macular pigmentation complicating irritant contact dermatitis and viral warts in Laugier-Hunziker syndrome.

Laugier-Hunziker syndrome (LHS) is a rare acquired disorder characterized by macu-lar pigmentation of the lips and oral mucosa, with frequent longitudinal melanonychia. Involvement of other areas, such as the genitalia and fingers, has rarely been described. LHS is a benign condition with no known systemic manifestations. We report the case of a woman who developed melanotic macules on her fingers and elbow 16 years after the onset of pigmentation of her lips. This unusual feature of LHS in our patient was associated with irritant contact dermatitis and viral warts. Only two cases of an associ

Two decades of occupational (meth)acrylate patch test results and focus on isobornyl acrylate.

BACKGROUND: Acrylates constitute an important cause of occupational contact dermatitis. Isobornyl acrylate sensitization has been reported in only 2 cases. We encountered an industrial process operator with occupational contact dermatitis caused by isobornyl acrylate. OBJECTIVES: (i) To investigate whether it is relevant to add isobornyl acrylate to the (meth)acrylate test series. (ii) To report patients with (meth)acrylate contact allergy at an occupational dermatology clinic. PATIENTS/MATERIALS/METHODS: Our patch test database was screened for positive reactions to (meth)acrylates between

[Manicurists and pedicurists - occupation group at high risk of work-related dermatoses].

In recent years occupational skin and respiratory diseases have been more and more frequently diagnosed in small production and service enterprises. The awareness of occupational exposure and its possible health effects among their workers and employers is not sufficient. Beauty salons, in addition to hairdressers and beauticians, frequently employ manicurists and pedicurists. The workers often happen to perform various activities interchangeably. the health status of beauty salons workers has rarely been assessed. The most numerous reports concern hairdressers. In this occupational group, the

Protein contact dermatitis--case report.

Protein contact dermatitis is a skin condition not well known and underdiagnosed by dermatologists, resulting from an IgE-mediated allergic reaction. Clinically it presents as a chronic hand and/or forearms eczema of occupational origin, especially in professionals who work as food handlers. Epicutaneous tests are negative, and to diagnose this condition it is necessary to perform immediate-type allergy tests. The most sensitive and practical is the prick-by-prick test with food that the patient refers to cause intense itching after immediate skin contact. Treatment is symptomatic, and it is m

Latex allergy: assessment of knowledge, appropriate use of gloves and prevention practice among hospital healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers and patients are often exposed to natural rubber latex (NRL) through contact with gloves and various healthcare products, which can potentially cause allergic reactions, with varying degrees of severity. In 2008, the Royal College of Physicians published their first evidence-based guidance on occupational health interventions for latex allergy, which emphasized the importance of healthcare workers having knowledge of latex allergy. AIM: This study aimed to survey the knowledge of healthcare workers (n = 156) about latex gloves and NRL allergy, routine prevention

Efficacious treatment of non-dermatophyte mould onychomycosis with topical amphotericin B.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytes are the main cause of onychomycosis, but various non-dermatophyte moulds (NDMs) are often the infectious agents in abnormal nails. In particular, Fusarium spp. and other NDMs are mostly insensitive to standard onychomycosis treatment with topical agents as well as with oral terbinafine and itraconazole. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work is to report the efficacy of a topical amphotericin B solution on NDM onychomycosis in a series of 8 patients resistant to multiple conventional topical and systemic treatments. METHODS: Treatment consisted in the application of an opt

Hand eczema: an update.

Eczema, the commonest disorders afflicting the hands, is also the commonest occupational skin disease (OSD). In the dermatology outpatient departments, only the severe cases are diagnosed since patients rarely report with early hand dermatitis. Mild forms are picked up only during occupational screening. Hand eczema (HE) can evolve into a chronic condition with persistent disease even after avoiding contact with the incriminated allergen / irritant. The important risk factors for hand eczema are atopy (especially the presence of dermatitis), wet work, and contact allergy. The higher prevalence

Occupational contact allergic dermatitis in dentistry.

INTRODUCTION: Dental professionals may be at increased risk of developing occupational allergic diseases specially to methacrylates that can permeate protective disposable gloves. CASE REPORT: We presented a case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis in a 28-year-old dental technician. The patient had complained of itching and cracking of fingers for 6 months. The dermatitis improved over weekends. Skin erythema and scaling were present with primarily involvement of the fingertips. Patch testing with dental series gave positive vesicular reaction to methyl methacrylate. Follow-up after

Antifungal susceptibility patterns of yeasts and filamentous fungi isolated from nail infection.

BACKGROUND: Onychomycosis is the nail infection caused by a wide spectrum of fungi species, including yeasts, dermatophytes and filamentous fungi non-dermatophytes (FFND). This fungal infection represents an important medical problem because it involves the patient's life quality. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to isolate and identify the fungal agents of onychomycosis, and to determine the in vitro susceptibility to antifungal agents. METHODS: During the period of March 2008 to March 2009, 114 patients clinically suspected of having onychomycosis were examined. Demographic data, mainly age and gend

[Filaggrin gene mutations are frequent and increase the risk of skin disease].

Filaggrin proteins are important for the epidermal differentiation and skin barrier function. About 10% of Europeans carry loss-of-function mutations within the filaggrin gene complex. Mutations are strongly associated with ichthyosis vulgaris and atopic dermatitis as well as dry and fissured skin. No overall association with psoriasis vulgaris has been identified. The filaggrin gene discovery has been a major breakthrough for dermatology in terms of diagnostics and prognostics, but it has not yet been translated into therapeutic advances.

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis in two full-term infants.

We describe two full-term infants who presented with congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) and compare their clinical presentation and outcome with that of neonatal candidiasis and chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis. Although candidal vulvovaginitis occurs in up to one-third of pregnancies, CCC is uncommon and can be confused with more-serious pustular disorders that present in neonates. Greater awareness of CCC is essential to make an early diagnosis and distinguish it from other infections.

Digital ulcers: overt vascular disease in systemic sclerosis.

RP is an almost universal manifestation of SSc, with 95% of all patients being affected, and resulting in digital ulcers (DUs) in approximately 30% of the patients each year. DUs are a major clinical problem, being associated with substantial morbidity (reduced quality of life, pain, disability and disfigurement) that can escalate to gangrene and amputation. Ideally, the treatment of DUs would improve tissue integrity and viability, promote ulcer healing and reduce the formation of new ulcers. Treatments that have shown potential include calcium channel blockers, prostacyclin analogues and end

Onycomycosis due to artificial nails.

BACKGROUND: The use of artificial nails (ANs) as part of nail-care cosmetics is very popular. Several side effects and complications, such as contact dermatitis and bacterial and fungal infections, have been reported in patients using ANs. Objective The purpose of this study was to identify the fungal pathogens in nail abnormalities appearing in patients with ANs. METHODS: We evaluated 68 patients suffering from nail changes and paronychia, which appear after removal of ANs. Mycological samples were obtained from two sites: distal parts of the involved nail and the proximal nail fold. KOH exa
