Adverse metabolic effects of antiparasitic drugs.

Several drugs are available for mass campaigns against enteric helminths. Mebendazole and pyrantel pamoate are quite effective against ascariasis and reasonably effective against the hookworms. Only mebendazole is effective against trichuriasis. Two drugs have recently been introduced for mass therapy of schistosomiasis, but they remain experimental, pending further evaluation. Other drugs are mentioned, and possible adverse metabolic effects are discussed. The fundamental question remaining is whether the eradication of certain parasites will improve the nutritional status of the infected pop

Some helminthozoonotic infections in Zambia.

Parasitic infections constitute an important group of zoonoses. Stool examination of inpatients, medical examinees and out-patients in a sub-tropical environment established that Inermicapsifer madagascariensis and Schistosoma mattheei are occasionally anthropozoonotic in Zambia. Strongyloides fülleborni, a species normally parasitic in primates is not uncommon in man; whether it is anthropozoonotic or a parasite well adapted to man in this part of Africa needs further investigation. The finding of unidentified spiruroid ova was considered to be due to a spurious infection. The need for the di

The incidence, pathogenesis and treatment of helminth infections in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

In a survey of 259 newly-imported rhesus monkeys, 5 species of nematode parasites were commonly found. Of these 5 species, Oesophagostomum spp. and Strongyloides fulleborni were implicated in the deaths of 3 monkeys. 5 other nematode species, 2 cestode species and 1 trematode species were also found; their pathogenicity is discussed. The results of treatment of parasitic infections with 6 different drugs is reported. Thiabendazole at an initial dose of 100 or 133 mg/kg and repeated at 50 mg/kg was found to be the most effective treatment against Oesophagostomum spp.

Different but overlapping populations of Strongyloides stercoralis in dogs and humans-Dogs as a possible source for zoonotic strongyloidiasis.

Strongyloidiasis is a much-neglected soil born helminthiasis caused by the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. Human derived S. stercoralis can be maintained in dogs in the laboratory and this parasite has been reported to also occur in dogs in the wild. Some authors have considered strongyloidiasis a zoonotic disease while others have argued that the two hosts carry host specialized populations of S. stercoralis and that dogs play a minor role, if any, as a reservoir for zoonotic S. stercoralis infections of humans. We isolated S. stercoralis from humans and their dogs in rural villages in no…

Infection status of helminth fauna in native and non-native freshwater fish in Jukdang stream, Korea.

Non-native species are known to pose threat to the ecological stability of indigenous communities following the introduction of pathogens into the new range thereby potentially altering the function of the ecosystem. Understanding the parasite diversity and pattern of assemblage in their introduced habitat is critical in addressing host-parasite interactions especially in environments exposed to human-mediated pressures such as heat polluted wastewater. However, despite marked environmental changes in the Korean aquatic system, parasite fauna and community structure in co-occurring native and

MUSEUM SPECIMENS OF WESTERN DIAMOND-BACKED RATTLESNAKES (VIPERIDAE: CROTALUS ATROX) REVEAL TRENDS IN BODY SIZE, DIET, AND ENDOPARASITES OVER THE LAST 75 YEARS.

Climate projections for the Southwestern United States predict increases in temperature, drought intensity and frequency, and wildfire intensity and frequency. Such climatic change is expected to impact communities and species of the region, including Crotalus atrox (western diamond-backed rattlesnake) and its helminth communities. We hypothesized that C. atrox in New Mexico has experienced measurable changes in body size, diet composition, and helminth communities over the past century. We examined specimens of C. atrox from 3 time periods: 1947-1960 (1950s, n = 34), 1980-1990 (1980s, n = 53)

Molecular Epidemiology of Helminths at the Wildlife-Livestock Interface in Kazakhstan: Evidence from Sheep and Saiga.

Helminth infections remain a major constraint to livestock productivity, particularly in regions where domestic animals and wildlife share grazing habitats. This study investigated the molecular diversity and transmission dynamics of helminth communities in sheep (Ovis aries) and saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) in West Kazakhstan. A total of 35 animals (20 sheep and 15 saiga) were examined, and helminths were identified using polymerase chain reaction targeting the ITS1 region of ribosomal DNA for nematodes and the mitochondrial cox1 gene for cestodes. Of the 20 analyzed samples, 80% were succ

Long-lasting helminthic infection in African migrants to Israel - Lessons from the field.

Various forms of voluntary migration have been and remain among the leading causes of the worldwide dispersal of parasites. Although helminthic infections are common in Africa, they are rare in Israel, making diagnosis challenging for many clinicians. We present 22 years of experience diagnosing under-recognized, long-lasting helminthic infections in migrants from African countries: Strongyloides stercoralis (up to 24 years), Schistosoma mansoni (up to 15 years), and hookworm (up to 12 years).

Helminth-infected Mozambican children with malaria have increased anaemia, cytokines and helminth-specific antibodies.

Owing to their overlapping geographical distribution and the consequent occurrence of coinfections, several studies have evaluated the impact of helminth infections on malaria immune responses and clinical outcomes. However, little has been reported on how malaria coinfection affects anthelmintic responses in children harbouring worm infections. We therefore aimed to assess the impact of malaria coinfection on helminth-related clinical and immune outcomes in children. Here, we measured in plasma the levels of 30 cytokines, total IgE, and helminth-specific IgM, IgA, IgG, IgG1-4, and IgE antibod

Rhadinorhynchus villalobosi sp. n. (Acanthocephala: Rhadinorhynchidae) from the gafftopsail pompano Trachinotus rhodopus (Carangiformes: Carangidae) from the Pacific coast in Mexico.

A new species of Acanthocephala is described based on specimens found parasitising the intestine of the gafftopsail pompano Trachinotus rhodopus Gill in the State of Oaxaca, off the Pacific coast of Mexico. Rhadinorhynchus villalobosi sp. n. differs from the other 25 species of the genus known from the Pacific Ocean by a combination of morphological traits, such as the fewer number of rows of hooks along the proboscis, the distribution of spines of the trunk forming two fields, the position of genital pore, subterminal in both sexes, a shorter neck and cement glands, among others. The phylogen

Cytokine pattern during asymptomatic Anaplasma spp. infections and effect of co-infections by malaria and helminths in schoolchildren of Franceville, southeastern Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic infections by Anaplasma spp. and the basis of the immune response during these infections have not yet been established. This study investigated the inflammatory cytokine responses during Anaplasma spp. infection in school children and the effect of co-infection with Plasmodium spp. and helminths. METHODS: Blood and stool samples were taken from children aged 5 to 17 years. Parasitological diagnosis was carried out by RDT and microscopy, while microscopy and PCR were used to diagnose infection by Anaplasma spp. Plasma was used for cytokine assays using the ELISA techn

A profiling of faecal parasites in horses in Mauritius and resistance to Fenbendazole at one horse-riding stable.

Mauritius hosts a population of approximately 900 equids, but no investigations have delved into issues such as the prevalence of equine helminths, anthelmintic usage, and resistance emergence. This study aimed to devise a qualitative and quantitative profile of common helminthic intestinal parasites in equines at eight out of twenty-eight stables (272 horses, 29 % of local population) and to determine whether helminthic intestinal parasites in equines at one stable have developed resistance to Fenbendazole by quantitatively assessing pre-treatment faecal egg counts, post-treatment faecal egg

Is Sociability Generally Linked to Infection? A Study Based on Rhesus and Japanese Macaques.

Parasite infection is one key risk inherent in group living and is considered to influence the formation and evolution of animal societies. Previous studies investigating the relationship between sociability (a measure of an individual's level of social engagement) and parasite infection have yielded mixed results, with some observing positive relationships between social network centrality and infection and others observing negative or no sociability-infection links. Here, we aggregated behavioral and parasitological data from three groups of rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta brevicaudus) in Ch

Co-infection prevalence of helminths and associated risk factors among schoolchildren in the Lake Tana Basin, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Helminths are important public health infectious agents and are highly prevalent in the tropics, including Ethiopia. Schoolchildren are highly vulnerable to these parasitic infections due to several personal habits. Although their helminths co-infection prevalence is significant, less attention is given to understand the burden. So far prevention of helminths has been conducted for decades, their co-infections are still a major challenge in endemic areas. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the helminths co-infection prevalence and associated risk factors among schoolchildren
