Iron Fortification and Inulin Supplementation in Early Infancy: Evaluating the Impact on Gut Microbiome in a Piglet Model.

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic iron fortification in infant formula effectively prevents iron deficiency anemia. However, the low absorption rate results in excess unabsorbed iron accumulates in colon, where it has been linked to harmful microbiota changes and increased diarrheal incidence. Prebiotic oligosaccharides have shown promise in mitigating these adverse effects, but the role of inulin or synbiotic supplementation with inulin-fermenting lactic acid bacteria in modulating early gut microbiome under iron fortification remains understudied. OBJECTIVES: This study used a neonatal pig model to …

Can a change in policy of complementary infant feeding reduce the risk for type 1 diabetes and celiac disease?

According to recent epidemiologic evidence, introducing solids while infants are still breastfed, and in any case not before the fourth month of life, could have positive impact on immune-related chronic disorders such as Type 1 Diabetes and coeliac disease.

Risk factors associated with sudden unexplained infant death: a prospective study of infant care practices in Kentucky.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of infant care practices in a metropolitan community in the United States with attention to feeding routines and modifiable risk factors associated with sudden unexplained infant death (specifically, prone sleeping position, bed sharing, and maternal smoking). METHODS: We conducted an initial face-to-face meeting followed by a telephone survey of 189 women who gave birth at a level I hospital in Kentucky between October 14 and November 10, 2002, and whose infants were placed in the well-infant nursery. The survey, composed of questions pertaining to infa

Pathogenesis, diagnosis, dietary management, and prevention of gastrointestinal disorders in the paediatric population.

Nutrition has a central role in child growth with long-term effects, and nutrition management in gastrointestinal disorders has great importance for child health and disease outcomes. Breast milk is the first choice for infant nutrition. When it is not available, special milk formulas are adopted in specific conditions, as a medical treatment. Moving from the strong guidelines, recommendations and the new possibilities of special diet treatment, this review will analyse the current diet treatment in different gastrointestinal disorders, including food allergy, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bow

The impact of flavour exposure in utero and during milk feeding on food acceptance at weaning and beyond.

An individual's experience of flavours contributes to their unique pattern of food preferences. Exposure to a specific flavour can increase familiarity and result in greater acceptance of this flavour over time. This paper describes the earliest occurrences of flavour exposure; first in utero, via amniotic fluid, and later through breast or formula milk. Evidence suggests these early experiences impact on later food preferences, but the extent to which specific flavour compounds from the mother's diet are transmitted during these pre- and early post-natal periods may vary within and between in

[Wilm's tumor. Diagnostic capacities of magnetic resonance imaging. MRI-pathomorphological comparison].

The accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of Wilms' tumor (WT) and in the evaluation of preoperative chemotherapy (PCH) efficiency was investigated and compared with histopathological data of 56 children and infants with proven retroperitoneum neoplasma (WT--49, neuroblastoma--6, congenital mesoblastic nephroma--1). The author described the WT MRI-semiotics in general and in particular for its changes during the preoperative chemotherapy. The formula for calculation of tumor reduction index is suggested. The MRI sensitivity (100%), specificity (77.8%) and accuracy (91.1

Sonographic diagnosis of infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

Twenty-five consecutive sonographic examinations performed at Flinders Medical Centre for possible infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) were analyzed retrospectively. The results and a pyloric muscle index calculated by a formula using length, diameter, muscle thickness, and body weight were compared with the clinical outcome (surgery or conservative management). In the children without IHPS, the calculated pyloric muscle index was less than 0.2, whereas in infants with proven pyloric stenosis, the index was greater than 0.2 (P < 0.001). This result suggested that the published index

The political economy of infant and young child feeding: confronting corporate power, overcoming structural barriers, and accelerating progress.

Despite increasing evidence about the value and importance of breastfeeding, less than half of the world's infants and young children (aged 0-36 months) are breastfed as recommended. This Series paper examines the social, political, and economic reasons for this problem. First, this paper highlights the power of the commercial milk formula (CMF) industry to commodify the feeding of infants and young children; influence policy at both national and international levels in ways that grow and sustain CMF markets; and externalise the social, environmental, and economic costs of CMF. Second, this pa

Meta-analysis of ocular axial length in newborns and infants up to 3 years of age.

In pediatric ophthalmology it is often necessary to obtain axial length in young children. For children older than 3 years, noncontact biometry can be used. For younger children this is usually not an option, and the clinician needs to rely on other imaging modalities. Depicted data curves in textbooks elaborate on few studies and limited number of subjects. The existing literature regarding normal axial length for preterm infants and term newborns is summarized and critically appraised for number of subjects, relevance, measurement method and error, gender and retinopathy of prematurity. Complementary Feeding and Overweight in European Preschoolers: The ToyBox-Study.

Complementary feeding (CF) should start between 4-6 months of age to ensure infants' growth but is also linked to childhood obesity. This study aimed to investigate the association of the timing of CF, breastfeeding and overweight in preschool children. Infant-feeding practices were self-reported in 2012 via a validated questionnaire by >7500 parents from six European countries participating in the ToyBox-study. The proportion of children who received breast milk and CF at 4-6 months was 51.2%. There was a positive association between timing of solid food (SF) introduction and duration of brea

Perinatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls and dioxins and its effect on neonatal neurological development.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and dibenzofurans (PCDFs)) are widespread environmental contaminants which are neurotoxic in animals. Perinatal exposure to PCBs, PCDDs, and PCDFs occurs prenatally via the placenta and postnatally via breast milk. To investigate whether such an exposure affects the neonatal neurological condition, the neurological optimality of 418 Dutch newborns was evaluated with the Prechtl neurological examination. Half of the infants were breast-fed, the other half were formula-fed, representing a relatively high aga

Allergenicity of food proteins and its possible modification.

All food proteins, taken via the oral route, are likely to be allergenic to some degree, but this usually leads to no untoward effects. Over the last decade excellent immunoassay methods have been developed that are suitable for measuring anti-food protein antibodies of different isotypes. General systemic and local tissue sensitivity to food antigens may also be measured by appropriate methods. All the circumstances (e.g., amount of ingestant, conditions in the gut, selective immunodeficiencies, gut permeability and genetic factors) determining heightened allergic responses are not yet fully

Factors influencing counseling on infant feeding options: a qualitative study with women living with HIV and their healthcare professionals in a high-income setting.

This qualitative study explores factors influencing counseling on infant feeding options for women living with HIV in a high-income setting. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty healthcare professionals from perinatal HIV teams and eleven women living with HIV to identify barriers and facilitators in the decision-making processes. The findings indicate that the absence of local protocols results in uncertainty and inconsistency in counseling, while both professionals and women emphasize the need for a clear division of responsibilities and up-to-date information tailored to cu

Subtractive genomics study for the identification of therapeutic targets against Cronobacter sakazakii: A threat to infants.

Cronobacter sakazakii is an opportunistic pathogen that has been associated with severe infection in neonates such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), neonatal meningitis, and bacteremia. This pathogen can survive in a relatively dry environment, especially in powdered infant formula (PIF). Unfortunately, conventional drugs that were once effective against C. sakazakii are gradually losing their efficacy due to rising antibiotic resistance. In this study, a subtractive genomic approach was followed in order to identify potential therapeutic targets in the pathogen. The whole proteome of the pa…

A Review of Bioactive Factors in Human Breastmilk: A Focus on Prematurity.

Preterm birth is an increasing worldwide problem. Prematurity is the second most common cause of death in children under 5 years of age. It is associated with a higher risk of several pathologies in the perinatal period and adulthood. Maternal milk, a complex fluid with several bioactive factors, is the best option for the newborn. Its dynamic composition is influenced by diverse factors such as maternal age, lactation period, and health status. The aim of the present review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding some bioactive factors present in breastmilk, namely antioxidants, growt

Impairment of Bony Crypt Development Associated With Hexavalent Chromium Exposure During Tooth Eruption.

Improperly treated hexavalent chromium-containing industrial wastes contaminate drinking water, potentially affecting children taking breast milk or baby bottles prepared with infant formula. Thus, the aim of the present work was to determine the effect of this toxic on bone activity in the developing alveolus during tooth eruption of suckling Wistar rats intoxicated with potassium dichromate. Experimental animals received a daily dose of 12.5mg/kg body weight of potassium dichromate by gavage for 10 days; controls received an equivalent volume of saline solution. Histologic and histomorphomet…
