Exploring accounts of collaborative working between speech and language therapists and stroke association communication support coordinators following stroke.

In the United Kingdom, speech and language therapists (SLTs) and Stroke Association communication support coordinators (CSCs) are both employed to provide services for people with communication difficulties following stroke. There is very little literature of this type of collaborative working. This research is unique because it explores collaborative working between SLTs who are employed by the National Health Service and CSCs who are employed by the Stroke Association. Five CSCs and seven SLTs from the East of England participated in a series of in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using

Examining Perceived Stress, Childhood Trauma and Interpersonal Trauma in Individuals With Drug Addiction.

The investigation of psychosocial factors in relation to opiate addiction is limited and typically uses binary measures to assess how incidences of childhood trauma correlate with addiction. There has also been a lack of enquiry into how experiences of noninterpersonal versus interpersonal trauma may impact drug use addiction. In this regard, the current study utilized a novel measurement of interpersonal versus noninterpersonal lifetime trauma and a scale assessing severity of childhood trauma to examine how these factors may impact patients with opioid addiction. The interaction between thes

Intimate partner violence in the family: considerations for children's safety.

Children's exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) is increasingly recognized as a type of child maltreatment that has a level of impairment similar to other types of abuse and neglect. Despite advances in the area of IPV, the safety planning strategies recommended as part of the overall response to IPV need to be examined in terms of their implications for children. This article discusses these strategies within the context of child safety, comparing IPV safety planning with approaches aimed at reducing exposure to other types of violence such as child sexual abuse, as well as general chi

Early therapy interpersonal process differentiating clients high and low in outcome expectations.

The present study compared early interpersonal process, during resistant and cooperative segments of session 1, between clients who went on to have low (n=9) versus high (n=8) treatment outcome expectations. Baseline outcome expectations were assessed prior to any therapist contact. During resistance episodes, there was substantially less affiliative reciprocity (i.e., complementarity), and greater client separation and hostility in the low versus high expectations group. During cooperation episodes, therapists of low versus high outcome expectation clients engaged in lower levels of affirming

Correlates of at-risk/problem internet gambling in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The Internet represents a new and widely available forum for gambling. However, relatively few studies have examined Internet gambling in adolescents. This study sought to investigate the correlates of at-risk or problem gambling in adolescents acknowledging or denying gambling on the Internet. METHOD: Survey data from 2,006 Connecticut high school student gamblers were analyzed using χ(2) and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: At-risk/problem gambling was found more frequently in adolescent Internet gamblers than in non-Internet gamblers. Compared with at-risk/problem gamblin

Borderline personality disorder: a dysregulation of the endogenous opioid system?

The neurobiology of borderline personality disorder (BPD) remains unclear. Dysfunctions of several neurobiological systems, including serotoninergic, dopaminergic, and other neurotransmitter systems, have been discussed. Here we present a theory that alterations in the sensitivity of opioid receptors or the availability of endogenous opioids constitute part of the underlying pathophysiology of BPD. The alarming symptoms and self-destructive behaviors of the affected patients may be explained by uncontrollable and unconscious attempts to stimulate their endogenous opioid system (EOS) and the do

A four year (1996-2000) analysis of social capital and health status of Canadians: the difference that love makes.

Despite extensive research on the relationship between social capital and health, the specific pathways through which social capital is related to health have not been fully elucidated. Moreover, research has generally been cross-sectional, particularly in Canada, and hence not clearly attentive to the causal relationship between social capital and health. In this study we have examined the importance of multiple forms of individual social capital for the functional health status of adult Canadians, employing the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS). We examine changes in health b

Use and feasibility of telemedicine technology in the dissemination of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.

This brief report discusses the use and feasibility of telemedicine technology in the dissemination of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). PCIT is an empirically supported behavioral parent training program for reducing disruptive behavior in young children and for reducing future rates of child physical abuse. The positive impact PCIT has demonstrated in reducing child maltreatment has galvanized interest in widespread dissemination of the PCIT model into child service systems. PCIT has traditionally been taught in university-based training programs in a mentored cotherapy model. By cont

Relationships with mothers and peers moderate the association between childhood sexual abuse and anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the current study was to assess whether relationships with mothers and peers moderate the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and anxiety disorders. That is, positive and supportive experiences were expected to minimize the effects of CSA whereas nonsupportive experiences were expected to magnify them. METHOD: Participants from a large, stratified, multistage-area, probability community sample provided retrospective reports of CSA and childhood relationships with mothers and peers and a modified version of the Composite International Diagnostic Intervi

[Assessment methods and preventive measures focusing on relationships].

In this contribution relationship-oriented assessment methods and preventive measures during infancy and childhood are founded in an ecological and differential understanding of development in context. Using selected developmental milestones it is demonstrated that relationships as a social context play an important role particularly during early infancy. Criteria for describing well functioning and maladaptive relationships can be derived from theoretical presumptions, empirical longitudinal studies and health related clinical judgements. These criteria may serve as guidelines for interventio

Correlates of suicidal ideation among HIV-positive persons.

OBJECTIVES: The present investigation sought to determine the extent to which demographic characteristics, illness-related burdens, alcohol and other substance use, and psychosocial factors are independently associated with suicidal ideation in HIV-positive individuals. DESIGN: HIV-positive individuals in four US cities (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and New York City) were screened between July 2000 and January 2002 for recruitment into a randomized behavioral prevention trial. Utilizing data from this screening visit, rates and correlates of suicidal ideation were examined in a div

Social skills training in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a randomized-controlled clinical trial.

Evaluated efficacy of social skills training (SST) on children with 2 subtypes of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants were 120 children (30 girls, 90 boys), ages 8 to 12 with ADHD-Inattentive type (ADHD-I; n = 59) or Combined type (ADHD-C; n = 61). The children were randomly assigned within diagnosis subtype to the treatment condition (8 weeks of SST) or the no-intervention control condition. SST led to greater improvements in both parent- and child-perceived assertion skills in the children with ADHD, yet did not affect the other domains of social competence. Diagnos

[Gastric and duodenal ulcers as occupational psychosomatic diseases].

Various stresses are considered to be involved in the development of gastric and duodenal ulcers. We interviewed patients of either gastric ulcer group (GU) or duodenal ulcer group (DU) with regular occupation who were admitted to our Psychosomatic Illness Department in order to examine the differences in the characteristics of their stress and developmental factors of their diseases between the two groups. Developmental factors were scored for comparison. The following results were obtained. Though group DU was generally younger than group GU, it tended to have a greater number of episodes. N

Barriers to physical activity in pregnant women living in Iran and its predictors: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the benefits of physical activity (PA) on maternal and fetal health, the level of PA is low among pregnant women globally. The aim of this study was to determine the barriers to PA and its predictors in Iranian pregnant women specifically. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 300 pregnant women referred to the Ilam health centers of Iran. The sampling strategy used stratified random proportional allocation sampling from both comprehensive health centers and health bases. Data were collected from September to December 2018 in relation to individual characte

TrusT: A Multicenter Pilot Study of a Manualized Group Therapy Focusing on Trauma-Related Sexual Symptoms.

Trauma-related sexual symptoms are common following interpersonal trauma yet are rarely systematically addressed in trauma-focused treatment. This multicenter pilot study aimed to evaluate the safety, applicability, and preliminary efficacy of a novel manualized group intervention integrating trauma-specific and sex therapy techniques (TrusT). In a multicenter pilot study, 54 individuals assigned female at birth (51 female, 3 non-binary, mean age = 33.8) with a history of interpersonal trauma and persistent sexual symptoms participated in a 12-week group therapy program with weekly sessions.
