Redescription of Gyropus parvus (Ewing, 1924) (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Amblycera: Gyropidae) from tucos-tucos (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae: Ctenomys ) in Patagonia, Argentina.

A detailed redescription of Gyropus parvus (Insecta: Phthiraptera: Amblycera: Gyropidae) is given based on specimens collected from the type host, Ctenomys colburni Allen 1903 , and the type locality, Estancia Huanuluán, Provincia de Rio Negro, Argentina. We expand and provide new chaetotaxy. New scanning electron microscopy images showing microstructural details of adults and eggs of G. parvus obtained from topotype specimens are included. Sexual dimorphism was mainly shown by differences in body size and abdominal chaetotaxy, with females being 17.5% larger than males and with more setae in

Population characteristics and the nature of egg shells of two Phthirapteran species parasitizing Indian cattle egrets.

The prevalence, intensities of infestation, range of infestation and population composition of two phthirapteran species, Ardeicola expallidus Blagoveshtchensky (Phthiraptera: Philopteridae) and Ciconiphilus decimfasciatus Boisduval and Lacordaire (Menoponidae) on seventy cattle egrets were recorded during August 2004 to March 2005, in India. The frequency distribution patterns of both the species were skewed but did not correspond to the negative binomial model. The oviposition sites, egg laying patterns and the nature of the eggs of the two species were markedly different.

The clinical trials supporting benzyl alcohol lotion 5% (Ulesfia): a safe and effective topical treatment for head lice (pediculosis humanus capitis).

Benzyl alcohol lotion 5% (BAL 5%) is a non-neurotoxic topical head lice treatment that is safe and effective in children as young as 6 months of age. The safety and efficacy of this pediculicide has been studied in 695 (confirm number) subjects in all phases of clinical development. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) demonstrated that the active agent appears to stun the breathing spiracles open, enabling the vehicle to penetrate the respiratory mechanism (spiracles), therefore asphyxiating the lice. Initial phase II trials compared this novel product to RID using identical volumes of treatme

The challenge of choosing a pediculicide.

Head lice is the most frequently occurring communicable disease, except for the common cold, among children in the United States. The impact on a family facing the challenge of head lice is tremendous, ranging from emotional to financial distress. Challenges also face the health care provider and school personnel. Many over-the-counter preparations and prescription products are available to combat head lice. With the alleged advent of pediculicide-resistant head lice, many other products and applications not necessarily intended to treat head lice are being recommended. The purpose of this art

Adaptive sex-ratio manipulation in Pediculus humanus capitis: possible interpretations of Buxton's data.

The sex-ratio pattern of an exceptional population of human head lice (collected in the Colombo Prison, Ceylon, in 1934 to 1936) was found to be consistent with a current hypothesis on adaptive sex-ratio manipulation. Data suggest that the louse burdens were isolated and, therefore, small burdens were inbred. Thus, local mate competition favored females that produced offspring with a female bias. This is the first report to suggest that anopluran lice are capable of adaptive sex-ratio manipulation.

[Lindane].

In Europe and in the US ectoparasitic diseases are increasingly diagnosed in all classes of society. Modern means of transportation promote the spreading from endemic areas into new regions and therefore questions of therapy are becoming increasingly important. A series of preparations in various galenic formulations and in various concentrations are available to treat the ectoparasitic diseases. Due to reports on Lindane poisonings the clinical use of Lindane preparations for the treatment of scabies and pediculosis has become somewhat controversial. In this article we review older and more r

Settling of insecticide from dip wash mixed with dam water and zinc sulphate and used to control sheep lice (Bovicola ovis).

Insecticidal dipping fluid emulsions, mixed in vitro in dam water containing suspended clay particles and 1% w/v zinc sulphate, were analysed to determine rates of settling of diazinon, cyhalothrin and cypermethrin. Fifteen minutes after mixing, the concentration of the insecticides 5 cm below the surface had declined by 72.5%, 72.8% and 89.4%, respectively. On remixing, the concentration of insecticide in suspension was close to or greater than the initial concentration. In 2 trials, lice were eradicated from sheep showered with dip wash mixed in cloudy dam water to which 1% w/v of zinc sulph

Immunization of rabbits with a midgut extract of the human body louse Pediculus humanus humanus: the effect of induced resistance on the louse population.

Resistance to human body lice, Pediculus humanus humanus L, induced by feeding on rabbits immunized with an extract of louse gut was studied. The mortality of lice fed on immunized rabbits was 73%, significantly higher than that of lice fed on control rabbits (52%) (P < 0.01). The proportion of dead nymphs and female lice with ruptured guts was significantly higher in lice fed on immunized rabbits (P < 0.01). The size of the bloodmeal was 35% greater in female lice fed on control rabbits than on immunized rabbits. Lice fed on immunized rabbits laid 40% less eggs than those fed on the controls,
